First Look: Winston’s Is The City-Coded European Bistro In Black Rock

By

Winston’s is the very reason Baysiders can start reconsidering the hike into the city for an elevated dining experience, because primo dining with a Euro flair has officially landed in Black Rock.

Lovechild of local husband and wife duo, Bonne and Kevan, this Euro-leaning bistro is the amalgamation of the couple’s deep love for hospitality, a lifetime of industry experience, many late-night Pinterest boards, and plucking inspiration from their travels around New York City and London.

Bon and Kev have had their eyes on the space for sometime now. Black Rock locals might remember the venue’s former life as an edgy dive bar, S Lounge and Bar. Now, it’s completely unrecognisable after a major transformation.

Kev brings his Lucas Restaurants creds to the table, having been with the famed restaurant group since opening days of Society and Lillian Brasserie until the time came to pour every waking moment into bringing Winston’s to life.

Bonne, whilst also a well-seasoned pro in the industry, is the real brains behind what you see when you walk through the door. Having rounded up the whole family to get the job done, you can expect kitsch black and white checkered floor, cosy brown leather booth moments, and warm low hanging pendant lights to set the mood. It's city-coded luxe with a distinct neighbourhood approachability to it.

Come the warmer Melbourne days, the entire front facade is lined with bifold windows that open up to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor dining during the summer time.

Now for the good stuff—what’s on offer on the food and drink front. With an ex-Commune Group Head Chef at the helm, the seasonal menu features all the classic Euro dishes in impeccable form.

There’s one-bite wonders like the spanner crab crumpet, and rosti with creme fraiche and caviar, but it would be remiss not to dive into the fresh ‘n’ zingy scallop ceviche topped with jalapeno and green tomato.

Continuing on the larger plate train, the dry aged pork chop is a must, but also worth ordering is the pink snapper, primo cheeseburger, and the steak frites.

The cocktails can do no wrong, with—and this one’s for those that are yet to find a spicy marg that packs a punch—the Spicy Paloma taking the crown. Insider's tip: if you hit up Winston’s during aperitivo hour from 3pm to 5pm, cocktails drop to just $16 a pop.
