What was once a conventional run-of-the-mill car park, Siddeley Street Car Park is poised to have one serious glow-up. Opening in the second half of 2022, the CBD rooftop car park is to be transformed into a sky-high sustainable garden oasis and farm.
Taking up residency in the 2000 square metre space, the Skyfarm initiative is set to be one of the largest sustainable projects in Melbourne and will feature a working farm, sprawling gardens, orchard, herb patch; and even a sustainably-focused cafe that will look out across the CBD and the Yarra below.
“It has never been more important for us to invest in sustainable greening projects which engage our community, show innovative thinking and showcase how we can all work together to create an environmentally friendly and greener future for our city. Projects like this will help to bring back the buzz by attracting more visitors into the city to enjoy this amazing rooftop urban farm," says Melbourne City Mayor, Sally Cap.
The garden has been designed to provide over five tonnes of fresh produce per year which will mostly be donated to OzHarvest, which will help provide those in need with healthy meals and food.
The entire rooftop garden and farm has also been designed in part to be a tourist destination; drawing people to its lush and bountiful plant life and gardens. It will also serve as an education centre for students, the community, and business industries to showcase the future possibilities of sustainably-focused projects.
