The Cutting Is Victoria’s Stunning Off-Grid Tiny Home On The Coast

By

A large farm house with a water tank.

They say good things come in small packages and this 30sqm dreamy farmhouse in Illowa definitely follows that ethos. Situated in Southwest Victoria on the traditional lands of the Gunditjmara people between Warrnambool and Port Fairy, this off-grid sensation is an aesthetic home run.

Crafted by host and architect Nick Lane from Small Not Tiny alongside builder Aaron Shields of Ample (Stella The Stargazer) this project sees a continuance of the efficient design, maximising space without sacrificing comfort.

Both native to the region and born out of shared love for design and building, The Cutting was a collaborative result from the pair, "we didn't even get a planning permit or anything, we just went for it", says Nick.

The name 'The Cutting' refers to the space between a local surf spot and references the space where the land juts away to provide a clear view of the coast.

After establishing the property the finishing touches and necessary permits were granted and what results is an impressively tall build with a clean-edged combination of tin and re-used hardwood and a chimney towering and solar panels lining the roof.

Inside is an immaculately curated space, with wooden furnishings that have been refurbished, from hardwood tables to the staircase that connects to the two levels.

The lounge is centred around the Coonara-style fireplace with a couch and day bed ideal for stretching out and taking in the sprawling hills of the property. The kitchen is well-spaced and provides all the tools of the trade as well as a good-sized table for dining.

Atop the mezzanine level is a tidy little study with a pull-out table for punching out some work or perhaps jotting down some memories—there is also a collection of board games to pass the time.

Tucked away is the bedroom which is a cosy escape at the top end of the house, there are shutter windows that provide an easy breeze as well as views of the surrounding farm.
