New Zealand fashion icon Karen Walker’s newest collaboration at Playpark will not only feature knits to warm our bodies for the winter season but the love behind this pop-up will warm our hearts.
From the 13th- 16th of June, Karen Walker will be holding a pop-up in her beautiful Newmarket store, featuring vintage hand knits which will go towards fundraising for the Dove Hospice.
Knowing Karen Walker, her pop-ups aren’t just for the sake of gaining some attention. They always have some sort of meaning behind them and that’s what we love! Last year was the collaboration with Storm and India, Hedley Books and The Caker which showcased the simple elements that create Karen’s ideal summer holiday—a sweet treat, hot cup of tea and a good book. This time, the designer has tapped into something a little closer to home and has dedicated this pop-up to her mother who had passed away in 2016.
Dove Hospice offers free holistic care and support for those with life-threatening or terminal illnesses and Karen felt a connection to the charity after her experience with them. She donated her mother’s old clothes to Dove Hospice and was touched by the respect and gratitude they showed to the history and attachment she had to the pieces of clothing and wanted to help raise awareness of the charity.
As it’s approaching the colder seasons, the previously owned, dry-cleaned and ready-to-wear pieces will be mainly focused on knitwear. The team at Dove Hospice and Karen Walker herself have gone through each and every donation of clothing and have managed to provide us with an eclectic mix of beautifully hand-knitted cardigans, sweaters and vests. These one-of-a-kind pieces truly deserve the “vintage” label as each piece has a different story behind it.
