By Jess Willemse
7th Jan 2022

Just when you thought your social cal couldn’t get more packed, FRINGE WORLD’s epic line-up for 2022 dropped. Brimming with comedy, circus, dance and theatre performances, it’s the perfect way to kick off the New Year with a bang.

Going down from Friday, January 14 through to Sunday, February 13 2022, there’s plenty to get your creative juices flowing. From larger-than-life fire acts through to belly-aching comedy shows, Fringe will ignite your imagination and dazzle alllll of your senses. Wondering where to even start? With more than 450 shows going down, we’ve somehow managed to pick out six must-see performances. You’re welcome.

Briefs: Bite Club

The Aurora Spiegeltent at The Pleasure Garden

Our favourite collective of creative, sassy and oh-so-confident hooligans are back for another year of Fringe. This time, they’re serving unforgettable looks and moves to the backdrop of Sahara Beck’s powerhouse vocals. Swoon.

Bite Club is all about jaw-dropping moments sure to make your temperature rise. Expect a chaotic collision of good tunes, circus moves, drag, burlesque and belly laughs. While some might say a performance by Briefs is out of the box, we’d suggest there was no box to begin with. In short, you won’t want to miss this one.

Tickets: $47-$57

CIRCUS FIRE Spectacular!

Big Top at The Pleasure Garden

One thing's for sure, with ZAP CIRCUS on stage, things are about to get real hot, real quick. This is far beyond adding a little bit of spice—it’s the whole bloody spice draw and a Carolina Reaper to match.

The dynamic duo behind this high-energy act, Tarrabelle and Rusty, deliver nothing but gasp-worthy moments as they explore comedy, acrobatics and even fire stunts. Be warned: this one isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Tickets: $20-$25

Main Hall at Girls School

Greek-out and gawk at GODZ, which promises to take audience on a hedonisti trip into the happenings of the ancient gods of Olympus.

Expect to be both in awe and belly laugh as the boys from Head First bring Cupid, Hercules and Dionysus to life in the biggest party to hit Mount Olympus since 500BC. The playful mix of storytelling, circus, stunts and comedy is not to be missed. We’ll see you there.

Tickets: $37- $39

DIVAS, The Drag Revue: Fierce And Fabulous

Main Hall at Girls School, 2 Wellington St

The Fourth Wall coined The Drag Revue as “big hair, big boobs, big vocals, and big dance moves!” and, quite frankly, we’re sold after that review. At the helm of this beautifully bedazzled operation is Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical star, Dean Misdale.

One thing is for sure, you’ll want to throw on some sunnies because this show is packed with sparkles, sequins and glitter galore. Paired with the crew throwing down moves to our favourite disco hits, you’ve got yourself one memorable night out. For anything but demure, add Fierce And Fabulous to your February agenda stat.

Tickets: $35-$40

Haus of Hans: Disco Spektakulär

The Aurora Spiegeltent at The Pleasure Garden

Inspired by the opulent New York City club scene in the early 80s and 90s, this multi-award-winning cabaret show will transport you to a magical, mesmerising time where the rulebook was thrown out the window. Gear up for a night of glitter, dance, drama and, of course, many, shiny disco balls—and with a name like Haus of Hans: Disco Spektakulär, you know you’re in for a wild ride.

Tickets: $45-55

Josh Glanc: In A One-Piece Crotch-Cut Short-Sleeve Polo

Home Economics at Girls School

If you’re unfamiliar with comedic extraordinaire Josh Glanc and looking for a solid—albeit unconventional and slightly obscure—laugh then get yourself to his solo show Josh Glanc: In A One-Piece Crotch-Cut Short Sleeve Polo this FRINGE. Garnering a string of accolades and a bunch of comedy awards, Glanc will be trying out new material this time ‘round, so expect rough but ridiculous hilarity as he takes to the stage in, well… a one-piece crotch-cut short-sleeve polo, no doubt.

Tickets: $25-28

Six shows not enough? Get your full-on FRINGE fix over at the FRINGE WORLD line-up. Be warned, though, you might just find your calendar packed after peeping what’s on.
