Four words, people—animated shows for adults.

While some things will never top The Simpsons, Netflix is a pretty big goldmine of new-age animated series created especially for adults. Some flip teenage angst on the head and some, or a lot rather, are undeniably out-of-this-world whacky. That should tell you that whatever your mood—there’s something for you.

Check the best animated series to watch on Netflix.

Love, Death + Robots

If you’re not into animation, Love, Death + Robots is the one series that will change your mind. This gem brings us a compilation of animated short stories, spanning across multiple genres such as, fantasy, fiction, horror and comedy. Each episode was produced with the intention of being easy to watch, but hard to forget and range from five to 17-minute stories.

Midnight Gospel

The vibe for this one is very Ricky And Morty, but even more weird and more psychedelic and acid-tastic, so think Adventure Time meets Charlie The Unicorn… with lots of swearing. The trippy show follows a spacecaster called Clancy who uses a multiverse simulator to interview and film creatures living in other worlds so he can sell these and make a bunch of money. You’re in for eight glorious and chaotic episodes and NONE of these are suitable for work or kids—seriously.

BoJack Horseman

We know this one needs no introduction. Created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Bojack Horseman is a humanoid horse, completely lost in a sea of self-loathing and booze but he’s at the point where he’s keen for a comeback. Once the star of a 90s sitcom, in which he was the adoptive father of three orphaned kids (two girls and a boy), he’s now on return with the help of a human sidekick and a feline ex-girlfriend.

Big Mouth

Another epic animated series on Netflix that needs no introduction. Big Mouth is a 10-episode, half-hour edgy adult animated comedy from real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Kroll Show, The League) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy) about the glorious nightmare that is teenage puberty. Comedian John Mulaney (John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid, Saturday Night Live) lends his voice to the character of Andrew, while Kroll (who serves as co-creator, executive producer) voices many including best friend Nick.

From the mind of Matt Groening comes Disenchantment, the adult animated comedy fantasy series on Netflix that follows the medieval misadventures of hard-drinking young Princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo and her personal demon Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio encounter ogres, mermaids, walruses, and lots of human fools all while uncovering the deeper mystery of Dreamland.

Rick And Morty

If you haven’t already hooked your teeth into Rick And Morty… what have you been doing? This animated series on Netflix is one of the OGs so strap yourself in, you’ve got a few seasons to binge. After having been missing for nearly 20 years, Rick Sanchez suddenly arrives at daughter Beth's doorstep to move in with her and her family. Although Beth welcomes Rick into her home, her husband, Jerry, isn't as happy about the family reunion. Jerry is concerned about Rick, a sociopathic scientist, using the garage as his personal laboratory. In the lab, Rick works on a number of sci-fi gadgets, some of which could be considered dangerous. But that's not all Rick does that concerns Jerry. He also goes on adventures across the universe that often involve his grandchildren, Morty and Summer.

F Is For Family

F Is For Family takes you all the way back to the 1970s, a time when political correctness, helicopter parenting and indoor smoking bans weren’t part of anyone’s vocabulary, let alone the norm. This animated Netflix series is inspired by the life of stand-up comic Bill Burr, who’s a co-creator and executive producer of the epic show. Burr also voices the character of Frank Murphy, a short-tempered veteran who lives in the suburbs with his wife, Sue (Laura Dern) and their three children. Naturally, Frank, who works at an airport, has a penchant for shouting and profanity-filled rants. And that’s exactly why we love him.
