The Ultimate Guide To The Best Of Launceston In 2024

By – who loves morning run clubs as equally as she loves negronis and tiny snack plates

Launceston stands as a charming Tasmanian city with a rich tapestry of history, culture, gastronomy, and natural beauty. As one of Australia's oldest cities, Launceston seamlessly blends its heritage with a vibrant modern culture and flourishing culinary scene. Dining and community is at the heart of Launceston, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy with a strong connection between food, local producers and tradition.

Surrounded by rolling hills and the meandering River Tamar/Kanamaluka, historic landmarks, bustling markets, and an array of outdoor activities meld to create a destination that captivates both locals and tourists alike. Here’s your ultimate 2024 guide to Launceston, according to Urban List.

How To Get To Launceston

First off, how to get to Launceston? The easiest and most time-efficient way is to catch a flight. Bonza has recently launched the first direct Gold Coast to Launceston flights, taking a bite out of the Apple Isle, and with tri-weekly flights starting from $79 per person, we’re here for it. Other airlines offer daily flights from all major cities.

Alternatively, those seeking a more scenic journey can opt for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, departing from Melbourne and arriving at Devonport, just a short drive away from Launceston. The ferry voyage not only offers a unique travel experience but also allows you to bring your own vehicles, providing flexibility for exploring the region at your own pace.

However, you won’t be spending much time in your room as Peppers Silo is centrally located near Seaport and Launceston town centre. At the heart of this heritage accommodation is The Conservatory, a light-filled breakfast and lounging space featuring works by award-winning Tasmanian artist William Rhodes. Daily breakfast is served in The Conservator—most likely with a side of conversation from the delightful owners—or you can sink into the sofa and lose yourself in a book. The smashed avocado on Sandy’s tin loaf with turmeric dukkah is a must-order or if you’re partial to a sweet breakfast, dig into the French toast brioche with vanilla mascarpone, poached peach and rosemary honey.

One of Launceston’s most elevated dining experiences, the aptly-named Grain of the Silos is located in Peppers Silo, the site of converted grain silos. Championing sustainable Tasmanian produce is the ethos which resonates in every aspect of this restaurant—from the local wine list to the produce sourced from Launceston’s Harvest Market to the friendly staff who know the producers behind the ingredients.

Start with small plates like the grilled octopus with crispy potatoes before moving onto larger dishes like the potato gnocchi with stracciatella and the lamb rump with garlic yoghurt. We love that there is a separate vegan menu and Grain of the Silos caters to range of dietary requirements. Hands down, one of the best restaurants in Launceston, if not Tasmania.

You would be remiss to visit Launceston and not dine at Stillwater, one of Launceston’s most awarded restaurants. Doubling as boutique seven-room accommodation, you can both dine and stay here—we would recommend both.

The extensive menu changes seasonally but some of our summer favourites include the Southern Rock lobster with smoked macadamia nut cream, Cape Grim beef tartare with anchovy and crispy skin pork belly with calamari. Don’t leave without trying the coconut panna cotta with white chocolate and sake-roasted nectarine. It’s heaven on a plate.

Black Cow Bistro

70 George St, Launceston TAS 7250

Black Cow Bistro boldly makes the claim that you’ll eat ‘beef like you’ve never experienced it before’ and while you might be sceptical, we can assure you that this is an accurate claim. In the heart of Launceston, this former local butcher’s shop stars free-range, dry-aged premium Tasmanian beef. Every dish is centred around local produce—including the plant-based dishes—and should be paired with a top-notch wine to complement.

Black Cow’s carefully curated wine list showcases local Tamar Valley gems and was awarded ‘Best Wine List in Tasmania’ in 2020 in the Wine List Awards. Warm up with Tasmanian oysters before diving into Cape Grim rib-eye on the bone, porterhouse steak from the Great Southern Pinnacle or slow-cooked Wagyu rump from Robbins Island. And that’s just to name a tiny selection.

Other top Launceston eateries we love include: Du Cane Brewery, Havilah Wine BarTurkish Tukka, Rupert & Hound, Bread + Butter and Saint John Craft Beer Bar
