It’s Mother’s Day every day at Brunetti Classico for sous-chef Alexandra Di Biaise.
She and her two children Davide and Nicole are all chefs in the kitchen at the Lygon Street institution—which turns 40 this year. The Australian-born Italian chef followed her son to Brunetti Classico for a cover shift and the rest is history.
“Initially I was hired to cover a few shifts in the kitchen at the Lygon Street store, and then I never left,” Di Biase says.
“My daughter Nicole is the chef di partie, I’m the sous chef and my son Davide is our boss, he’s the head chef.”
“Davide says he’s only my boss on paper because I’m always his mum,” she jokes.
Di Biase immigrated back to Italy where she got married, had Davide and Nicole and then came back again to Australia.
Their bond isn't just limited to work either, the three all still live together as well, and sometimes mother and son even commute in on motorcycle two-up.
“After 41 years I got homesick,” she says, “Soon after returning to Australia, my children followed me to Melbourne from Italy.”
The bond between the three is seriously special, as she says, “food is the glue of our family” and speaks volumes about their relationship.
“We don’t need to say anything, it’s like being telepathic. For me, Mother’s Day is every day,” Di Biase says.
“My children always make a point of making Mother’s Day special, even if we’re at work and it’s one of the busiest days of the year.
“They never forget to bring me a special coffee or chocolates, a bunch of flowers. My children are the best part of me and the best part of my life, I’m proud of what they have become.”
