Grab The Popcorn, The Flatshare Is The Must-Watch Rom-com Series Of Summer

By Morgan Reardon

23rd Dec 2022

Is it just us, or do book-to-TV adaptations always slap? From romances that brought men’s silver chains back into vogue in a big way, to peak 2012’s nostalgia, our screens have been stacked with stories that originated on the page in recent years. If you’re hanging out for your next heart-string-pulling, page-turner to hit the small screen, get the snacks ready, because we’ve found the ultimate rom-com series of the summer—and it’s hitting your screens sooner than you think.

It’s a big claim we know but hear us out because The Flatshare is worth the hype - and then some.

Based on the best-selling book by Beth O’Leary (that we may or may not have devoured in a single sitting), The Flatshare is streaming on Paramount+  now.

The six-part series is set in the UK—cue those swoon-worthy accents—and follows the lives of Tiffany, played by Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay, and Leon, played by Anthony Welsh (The Great, Master of None).

The duo have precisely nothing in common, except they’re both cash-strapped and looking for a way to afford their sky-high inner-city rent (feels!).

The Flatshare character Tiffany

The strangers connect when Leon starts searching for a roommate to split the cost of his one-bedroom flat. The only catch? Leon, who works the night shift at a hospice, will be occupying the flat from 8am to 8pm, and his new flatmate will have the space to themselves during the night. For the recently dumped Tiffany, who works 9 to 5 at a news website and is desperate to find a place to live, the truly unique situation proves to be her saving grace.

Initially, their cohabitation works and Tiffany and Leon manage to live separate lives, never actually seeing each other, despite sharing the same bed. That is until they start communicating with each other via Post-Its. Firstly for calling out the necessary flatmate admin, like taking out the rubbish or leaving the toilet seat up (again, feels), before the notes start growing into something much deeper.

Soon enough the short, sprawled messages prove to be a lifeline for the duo, revealing their most personal secrets to each other, and sharing everything from tales of broken hearts to broken families. As their attraction for one another starts to grow, the question arises: can you really fall in love with someone you’ve never actually set eyes on?

The perfect mix of romance, drama and sassy comedy, grab the popcorn, crank up the AC and stream The Flatshare on Paramount+ now.
