To the surprise of perhaps no one but to the joy of many, Netflix’s biggest show of all time (yes, it even beat out Bridgerton), Squid Game, is getting a second season.
The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared the news with AP yesterday saying that, “There's been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice."
He added, “It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this…Gi-hun will come back. He’ll do something for the world.”
This simultaneously brings tears of happiness to our eyes and makes our chests tighten at the thought of enduring another insane season of the anxiety-inducing Korean drama.
If you’re one of the few people who haven’t yet binged the series, it follows hundreds of ordinary people from different walks of life who, after finding themselves in crippling debt, partake in a Hunger Games-style competition. Contestants compete in various rounds of mysterious survival games, which are actually based on childhood games, to win $45.6 billion in prize money to pull them out of their massive debt. The catch? If you lose a single game, you die. Yep, it’s spine-tingling, gruesome stuff and oh so addictive.
The end of season one (warning: spoiler alert) saw the show’s protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) giving away the prize money, ditching his plans to reunite with his daughter and instead returning to the game to seek vengeance—with a new, fire-engine red hairdo.
While Netflix has kept mum about the details of season two and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk admits he’s still in the planning process, it seems like anything is possible. And with so many fan theories flying around TikTok we cannot wait to see what the Korean drama cooks up for us.
