December is here and Christmas is officially upon us (for better or for worse). But with so many friends to catch up with, presents to wrap and parties to buy dranks for, who has time for exploring these days? Well, let’s just say you’re missing out because this week Brisbane is coming at you with events well worth clearing the schedule for. We’re talking everything from a trendy AF terrarium workshop to a midnight screening of The Last Jedi to a showcase of one of Queensland’s best local beer brewers. And that’s just the beginning.
Here are five awesome things to do this week in Brisbane.
Monday 11th December
The Enchanted Garden
The myth, the legend, Roma Street Parklands' annual light spectacle is back! During the aptly-named The Enchanted Garden, this CBD paradise is transformed into a magical light garden in celebration of the silly season. Think trees wrapped with twinkling fairy lights, light sculptures and flowers glowing in the night like the stars above. And it won’t cost you a single dollarydoo, courtesy of Brisbane’s free Christmas program. The Enchanted Garden will be taking place from December 8 to December 17, between 6:30pm to 9:30pm every night. For all the details, click here.
Wednesday 13th December
Succulent Terrarium Workshop
Botanicals By Bella are offering the humble denizens of Brisbane the chance to hand-craft their own succulent terrarium in a handy-dandy workshop—no green thumb experience required. Taking place at Workshop Brisbane, this class will take you step-by-step through the process of creating your own little slice of succulent heaven. All you need for the class is a glass vessel large enough to fit your hand in, everything else – including your new plant baby—will be supplied by Botanicals by Bella. Get your hands dirty from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. For all the details, click here.
Black Hops Brewery Showcase
Craft beer connoisseurs of Brisbane, this one’s for you. The team over at Helsby’s Alehouse, located inside The Pineapple Hotel, are back at it with their next Brewery Showcase event, this time introducing Black Hops Brewery to Brisbane. A ticket to this much-coveted event will net you four beer samples from Black Hops Brewery and a selection of culinary delights. Plus, Black Hops’ Head Brewer, Michael ‘Govs’ McGovern, will be on hand to answer questions, spin tales and give you the complete rundown on what makes Black Hops Brewery so awesome. Festivities kick off from 7pm. For the complete low-down, click here.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi Midnight Screening
Guys, IT’S HAPPENING! Star Wars: The Last Jedi is officially coming to town and you can be one of the first to see it in this cheeky midnight screening at Event Cinemas Myer Centre. As part of the event, a Star Wars cosplay competition will take place with a themed backdrop set up for you to take killer in-character costumes. Or you could get your photo taken with Kylo Ren, Rey, Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma instead. The event will kick off from 10pm, with a number of activities—including cantina dancing—and games planned to keep you pumped before the screening at midnight. Oh and did we mention the winner of the cosplay competition will win a combat lightsaber and a professional cosplay photoshoot courtesy of the legends at Cosplayers United and Sabers Unleashed? Be still our force-loving hearts. For all the details, click here.
Thursday 14th December
Xmas Open Mic Presented By Ruckus Brisbane
We love Christmas, we love spoken word poetry, so when Ruckus Brisbane went and combined two of our favourite things in their Xmas Open Mic night we just had to share. The event is open to anyone excited to give spoken word poetry a try, with the usual Ruckus suspects on hand to give those brave souls all the encouragement needed. For entertainment, festive circus music will serenade you as you sit back and listen to the keenest Brisbane poets let loose their talent. Been saving up a poem but never quite got up the courage to say it at a Ruckus Slam? Give the open mic night a try. Really need to vent those anti-Christmas feels you’ve been accruing? Heck, we won’t stop you. Just don’t blame us when you’re pulled off stage by a giant candy-cane. What can we say, the Ruckus crew really like Christmas. The Xmas Open Mic night will take place at the New Globe Theatre from 7:00pm. For all the details, click here.
