Where To Find Brisbane’s Best Prawn Toast, According To You

By

One thing about us, we are gonna find a niche food item and become super obsessed with it. Enter, prawn toast. If you’re not familiar with this dim sum delicacy and you're picturing three lonely prawns spooning each other on a bit of wonder white, think again. It’s made from small triangles of bread, coated with a paste made from minced shrimp and cooked by baking or deep frying and we like them more than moneybags. Yes, we are calling that.

To help us find the best in Brisbane, we called on our readers to nominate their favourite places for prawn toast in Brisbane, and it turns out we’re not the only people obsessed with this crunchy snack. Read on prawn lovers, here's where you can find the best prawn toast in the land of Brisbane, according to you.

Southside

South Brisbane

You know Southside was going to be our first port of call when constructing our list, and as always they did not disappoint. Ain't no thin smear of paste on this prawn toast, instead it looks like a brick you could actually build a house out of. A thick layer of prawns is given a seeded crust, while the whole dish is accompanied by truffle and citrus mayo. Add a little champagne and you’re well and truly on.

Stanley

Howard Smith Wharves

More pared back but delicately delish, the crisp, golden squares of chive and sesame prawn toast from Stanley are a must-consume. Complete with picturesque views and all the trimmings of their elevated yum cha and prepare, this spot is definitely a whole lot fancier than your usual prawn toast pit stop.

Donna Chang

Brisbane City

Plain bread not enough for you? At Donna Chang, they kick things up a notch, coating their sizable square of prawn toast in sesame and crowning it with zesty roe and seaweed mayonnaise. It doesn’t hurt that the rest of their menu is equally as extra.

Oh Boy Bok Choy

Stafford

Oh boy is right, we want 40 servings of these. Oh Boy Bok Choy, our favourite north-side ultra-slick pan-Asian eatery, is home to the 'Oh Boy' prawn toast (and a bloody impressive bar). Your sesame-crusted prawn toast comes to you piled in a generous serving, complete with a yuzu mayo we REALLY wish we could just snag off the shelf at our local grocery shop.

Hello Please

South Brisbane

The reigning champ of the ‘thicc boi’ toast award on this list goes to the prawn toastie from Hello Please. Yes, you read that right, it's a whole-ass crispy fried prawn-loaded toastie complete with yuzu kewpie and chives. Enough said.

Madame Wu

Brisbane City

Spotting a plate of prawn toast across the dining room at Madame Wu, you might think they’re arancini, but you have thought wrong dear reader, it's a nugget of umami deliciousness. Adorned with lashings of bonito mayo and roe, plop the whole morsel into your mouth and wait for the flavour bomb to explode.

Little Red Dumpling

Various Locations

This writer is a Little Red Dumpling stan and 100 per cent agrees with your nominations. Their West End location has seen me through many a teary night so it's a little hard to not obsess over their prawn toast just that little bit more. Coated in sesame seeds, chocka block with plump prawns and a sweet chilli sauce for dipping, you really should order approximately three servings.

Uncle Wang

Petrie Terrace

The Barracks are kind of underrated and we will be the first to say it. Uncle Wang’s is no different, a somewhat slept-on Chinese restaurant whose prawn-filled baby sandwiches need to be on your ‘must-eat’ list. Follow them up with mains like the crispy pork belly with black garlic sauce and chilli plum jam.
