Proffering authentic yakitori properly grilled over a charcoal fire, plenty more Japanese eats on the side (bonus) and all the sake that you can handle responsibly, Bird’s Nest has been slinging skewers in West End since 2013. But with their legion of fans growing ever larger, their Melbourne Street digs started feeling a little cramped—so they’ve moved into a bigger and better spot right across the road on Edmondstone Street.

Now located in the former home of Billykart, Lowry Group has worked its magic on the new space, which features hot pink booths partitioned off by gauzy curtains, a dedicated bar area and some impressive bamboo features. Sophisticated enough to be worthy of a restaurant group that now has five locations yet still channelling the laid back vibe that made them so popular in the first place, it’s worth checking out, even if you’re well acquainted with their chicken skin skewers and spiced fries.

Alongside binchotan grilled skewers of pork belly, garlic prawns and king oyster mushrooms, you can smash bao buns, takoyaki, yakisoba, gyoza, sashimi and plenty of other izakaya-style Japanese bites. They also have a lengthy list of cocktails, wines, Japanese beers, sake, shochu, umeshu and Japanese spirits, including whiskey, gin and vodka, so you’re well covered on the drinks front.

You’ll also find Bird’s Nest in Fortitude Valley, Toowong, Everton Park and Hamilton.
