Kookaburras cackle as the clouds slowly drift down Mount Buffalo while we sit, swish a local bottle of saperavi and watch dusk fall on an enchanting spring evening in the High Country.
We’re in the Buckland Valley, looking out at the ever-imposing and inspiring Mount Buffalo at The Buckland Studios, a romantic and intimate, kid-free farmstay just a stone’s throw away from Porepunkah.
Owners Melany and Dave Dalbosco made the move (back, in Dave’s case) from Geelong in 2015 and took over the studios in 2019. Since then they have created a haven for couples looking to get away. This is the perfect spot for an anniversary, a proposal, birthday, or for some 'us time' with your partner.
“A lot of people say it’s the first time they’ve had time to reconnect with each other, life’s busy, it’s tough,” Melany says.

“That’s why we put so much thought and effort into the studios, so people can just stay there and chill. If you can stay around the property, do. Guests say there’s something so special about the view (of Mount Buffalo) and the calmness and the stillness.”
The refreshed studios numbered one through five each offer their own unique charm, whether it be a bushview bath, or mountain vistas and superb alfresco dining. The chalet-style one bedders are kitted out with everything you would expect, except for (thank goodness) wi-fi, meaning you actually have to switch off when you’re here. Little touches like the plush furnishings, the pillow menu, gas or wood fires, robes and slippers, and genuine local produce really elevate the accommodation.
Included is a breakfast hamper and additionally they offer in house pasta, charcuterie and barbeque packs, food delivery, local wines, dinner, massages, even a private chef—you name it and Melany can organise it.
But the biggest highlight of all is the solitude and relaxation that comes free with the mountain air and serene views.
There’s often a question of privacy at farmstays and the like, but true to their word Melany and Dave give you free run if you wish, otherwise they’re only a text message away.
“We’re here if you need us, ask us absolutely anything, but this is your space, if you need us to do anything we can, but hopefully you just get to enjoy each other,” she says.
Keep your eyes peeled for local visitors, like wombats, echidnas, kangaroos, wild deer and native birds.
Nearby, on the odd chance relaxing is too much hard work, there’s plenty on, take a dip at Sinclair’s Waterhole, pop into Porepunkah with its fantastic pub, pantry and the Ovens River, grab a bottle at Gapsted Wines or Ringer Reef Winery. Mandatory though is a trip to The Horn at Mount Buffalo when the weather allows, given its proximity and striking heights.
The Buckland Studios is easily accessible by car at around four hours from Melbourne (rest/winery stops included). The nearest public transport is the V/line to Bright, with local private transport available. Prices start from around $400.
