Auckland’s a great city and we love it to bits but sometimes we’d just like a break from the bloody rain. It’s hard to know how to keep yourself busy on a cold and wet day and it’s even harder to know what to do with the kids. Lucky for you, Auckland has a heap of epic indoor adventures that will keep both you and your little angels happy.
Here’s our round up of the best indoor activities for kids in Auckland.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is pretty much the perfect place to spend a rainy day and there’s plenty to do and see to keep the kids entertained. Check out the volcano room, dinosaur exhibitions and the always exciting Weird and Wonderful room. The Auckland Museum also has an ever-rotating range of short-term exhibitions, from Lego to butterflies to the history of New Zealand music and so much more.
Delve deep into a different world at Kelly Tarlton’s—from the moment you enter through the tunnel, you’ll be immersed in the realm of the underwater and Antarctic. Explore and interact with the coldest place on earth as you walk through the Antarctic Ice Adventure, shudder with fear as you walk through the Shark Tunnel and crawl through sea caves in the Shipwreck Shore play zone.
Paradice Ice Skating
Avondale and Botany
Take a break from all that Auckland rain and trade it for ice at Paradice Ice Skating. Slip on your skates and bust out your best triple lutz to wow your audience. If you or the kids are a bit new to things, no worries—Paradice offers classes through their Skate School, so you’ll be a pro in no time.
If you’re after the skating without the ice, why not pop on down to ActivZone in Glenfield? Choose from rollerskates or rollerblades and wobble your way around the rink for a bit of nostalgia. After all, this is what we did in the days before iPads right?
Gloputt Mini Golf
Take minigolf to a whole new level at Gloputt Minigolf, Auckland’s first glow in the dark mini golf course. With buildings, foliage, pathways and more all lit up with glowing colours, minigolf becomes that much more exciting. Skip trudging around in the rain or blazing sun and take the kids to the air-conditioned comfort of Gloputt’s epic indoor facilities.
Mairangi Bay, East Tamaki & Avondale
If the kids are keen for a jump on the tramp but the weather just isn’t playing ball, round them up and take them to JUMP. With thousands of square metres of interlocking trampolines, foam pits, dodge ball courts and basketball hoops, JUMP is sure to help your brood burn off some of that excess energy.
Virtual Reality Studio
If you want to be entertained while the kids are too, take them to Virtual Reality Studio in Mt Roskill. There are few things funnier than watching someone flail around, walking imaginary planks and dodging pretend arrows while getting tangled in the cords and yelling into their headset. Take them into The Retro Room afterwards and challenge them to the arcade games of your childhood.
Can’t make it to the mountain this winter? No problem, Snowplanet brings the mountain to you. With more than 8,000 square metres of snow, there’s plenty of room for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and other fun activities. Hit the slopes alongside the kids or supervise from the comfort of the restaurant—complete with cosy fireplace. Snowplanet also offers lessons so your groms can become shredders under their expert guidance.
Wairau Park & Botany
Rally the troops and head over to Xtreme Entertainment for an adventure filled day. Sit back and enjoy Xtreme’s free Wifi while the kids pick from bowling, laser tag, arcade games, pinball or pool. Xtreme also has a pretty epic four-story playground (with safety nets, don’t worry) so your little cherubs can climb and explore to their heart’s content.
CBD & Manukau
If your kiddo fancies themselves a bit of a Nancy Drew, put their sleuthing abilities to the test at Escape Masters. Become the main characters of a mystery and solve the clues to break out of the room you’ve been locked in within an hour. This is a great one bonding activity as you’ll have to work alongside each other to escape.
Clip ‘N Climb
Take your mini adrenaline junkies to Clip ‘N Climb so their adventures reach new heights. Their highly trained staff will make sure your babies stay safe as they enjoy their hour-long session. There are 34 climbs to choose from so it’s suitable for kids of all ages.
Odyssey Sensory Maze
If you’re after an a-maze-ing adventure, take the fam to Odyssey Sensory Maze. As you try to find your way out, all five of your senses will be assaulted by darker spaces, quirky obstacles, optical illusions, scents and sound effects to provide with an experience unlike any other.
Mt Roskill, Glenfield & Manukau
For the young and the young at heart, Inflatable World is the perfect place to wile away a rainy day. Bounce around on castles, obstacles courses and massive slides until their legs ache and their cheeks hurt from smiling. The best part? They encourage parents to play alongside the kids so you can amongst the bouncy castles too.
West Wave Aquatic Centre
Let’s face, there are only about three weeks a year where Auckland weather is good for swimming outdoors and sometimes your kids are gonna want to get in the water. Lucky for you, Auckland’s got some pretty epic indoor pools and West Wave Aquatic Centre is one of the best. With a lane pool, wave pool, lazy river, dive pool and a hydro-slide, the kids will keep busy for hours.
Go To The Movies
Can we all just agree that there’s no better indoor activity than watching a movie? For two blissful hours, you get to sit in a comfy chair, in an air-conditioned room and escape your everyday life for a world of adventure, romance and happy endings. Auckland’s got a ton of cool places for you to catch a flick, so check out this list of our faves.
