Auckland…. are you ready for this? Cult fave Kai Eatery has officially opened on the shore, and it’s everything we’ve hoped for and more.

The already epic Smales Farm has just levelled up with its latest addition. For those in the know, Kai Eatery has long been the go-to spot for some of the most succulent fried chicken in town. 

Their new space features a hip and modern fit out with neon hues, wooden furnishings and a sprawling wall of greenery inspired by tea leaves found in Taiwan. 

Brought to us by Allen Yeh, to open the eatery has been a goal since the brand's beginning at Auckland night markets.

“We really wanted to create an atmosphere where people can come and just chill in,” says Allen. “We’re serving all of our classics, with more creations on the way.” 

Living up to every bit of their hype, Kai Eatery’s menu features the classics we all know and love.

Our top pick is the hei hei bao. Think Kai Eatery’s crisp signature fried chicken paired with daikon, cucumber, fresh slaw, smothered in an addictive chipotle sauce all encased in a bao bun. Heaven. 

Or, opt for the 101 bao. Packed with tender pork belly, pickled greens, cucumber, and roasted peanuts atop a golden hashbrown. Yes, it is as good as it sounds. 

The rice bowls are also worth a mention. Perfect for lunch, each comes with a heap of rice and house-made citrus shoyu salad. Simply choose from either crispy chicken, spicy wings, chicken bites, pork belly or charcoal chicken, easy.

In the mood for a feast? Look no further than the jaw-dropping XL chicken. Accompanied by four optional seasonings: original—for those wanting to stick to the basics, spicy—if you’re wanting to heat things up, the charcoal—brushed with kai's special charcoal sauce and flamed torched to perfection and peri peri. They only serve to add more flavour to their already drool-worthy fried chicken.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to Kai Eatery without a serving of their famous kumara fries... With quality sweet creamy kumara covered in an extra crispy batter topped off with magical signature seasonings, it’s not hard to see what all the fuss is about.

Why stop at just the eats? Hit the bubble tea buffet and create your own. Simply choose your base flavour and load up on all the jelly and bubbles you can handle and slurp away. Not on the tea train? Give a smoothie a whirl instead, we recommend the mango and strawberry. 

A game changer for the Auckland foodie scene, Kai Eatery offers flavours you won’t find anywhere else and, once you get a taste, you’ll find yourself counting down to Kai time.
