Over the past couple of years, Hobart’s food scene has gone crazy with new foodie hot spots popping up all over the city, not to mention the fringes—you'll have no trouble if you're looking for somewhere to eat.
And with Virgin Australia announcing direct flights from Perth to Hobart will be launching on 17 September, there's never been a better time to get curious about Australia's most southern state.

Heading into Dier Makr you’ll find a degustation-only menu that'll set you back $65. As we’ve come to expect in Tasmania, the menu features dishes made only from locally sourced ingredients. Don’t miss visiting the wine room to pick your tipple, or even grab one of their delicious cocktails.
Fico is your destination if you’ve got Italian on your mind. What you’ll find at Fico is your classic Italian menu you’d totally expect but with a bit of a Japanese influence on some of the dishes—which will keep you on your toes. On Sunday Fico runs a long lunch which will set you back $85pp.
Ettie’s is a wine bar, bottle shop, bistro, and basement piano bar all in one. Mains include morsels such as octopus with white beans and nduja vinaigrette and gnocchi Bolognese. And we hear the roast chicken is definitely worth a look if it’s on the menu when you’re there.
You’ll find Landscape attached to The Henry Jones Art Hotel on Hunter Street. Inspired by, and featuring many artworks by the English painter John Glover, Landscape dishes up magnificent ingredients like aged local wagyu, Tasmanian lamb, or freshly caught seafood with all being expertly cooked over coals on their Asado grill. If you’re not sure which wine to choose, look to Landscape’s renowned sommelier Louise Kesur who will point you in the right direction.
The Agrarian Kitchen Eatery & Store
Thirty-five minutes out of Hobart you’ll find The Agrarian Kitchen, a restaurant set inside what was Australia’s oldest psychiatric hospital. Having already had a cooking school and farm, it only made sense that the team put those skills and ingredients to good use in a restaurant, which they launched in 2017.
ALØFT can be found above Brooke Street pier, where you’ll find ferries trawling back and forth between MONA and the city. ALØFT’s menu changes with the seasons, so you’ll find the finest Tasmanian produce on show here. If you’re looking for a good feed with great views of the Derwent, ALØFT is definitely your destination.
Set in the back streets, Templo has room for only 20 diners at one time, so best to book if you’re looking to pop in. The charm of Templo is its massive communal dining table, where you’ll sit with people you’ve never met to enjoy a delicious meal. The menu features eight to ten dishes daily with ingredients sourced within a 50km radius of the restaurant. Expect Italian and other European inspired dishes.
Set in a former Ford showroom, Franklin serves up modern fare featuring wood roasted meats that include Littlewood lamb, pigeon, vegetables, and seafood. If you can’t decide what to order you can hit up their Feed Me menu which will set you back $85pp, or add matched wines for another $55pp.
Willing Bros Wine Merchants
Willing Bros is a neighbourhood wine bar that is also dishing up meals ranging from snacks to hearty feasts. The menu features a French vibe, with steak frites or duck cassoulet at the ready to be ordered with abandon. The wine list features local wines along with a healthy range of European tipples.

As you’re now coming to expect, The Source features a ton of local ingredients that are put on your plate in an uncomplicated way. Born In Brunswick
Born In Brunswick is about as close to a Melbourne cafe that you’ll find in Hobart. Great coffee and amazing food all set against an exceedingly stylish backdrop make this spot a must-visit destination when in Hobart. Did we mention they serve brisket and macaroni croquettes for brunch?
Small-Fry is, as its name suggests, a small cafe, but it's got a big heart and that's what counts. Grabbing a spot at the communal table will see you rubbing shoulders with fellow brunch-eaters, work-goers, and even the team busily cooking away on the stovetop and making coffee. Give the Croque a run if you’re paying a visit: a four-cheese brioche toastie with onion jam, pickles, and chives.
Peacock And Jones
Like Landscape, you’ll find Peacock And Jones as part of The Henry Jones Art Hotel. Peacock And Jones is a bit of a more laidback affair. Feast upon Huon Valley Berkshire pork chops, wallaby, pressed lamb shoulder, and much more from a menu that covers all bases including vegetarian. Be sure to finish with their delicious bread and butter pudding.
If you’re starved for a burger The Standard is your go-to. Featuring an ever-changing menu that covers beef, chicken, and vego burger options, along with fries and shakes to round out your carb loading efforts. We recommend wrapping your laughing gear around the Bacon Bad which features a beef patty, American cheese, bacon-onion jam, pickles, and a blue cheese dressing.
