There’s not much we West Coasters love more than kicking back for a long lunch and washing it down with a generous glass of wine, but if it’s paired with the stunning views of the Margaret River/Wadandi Boodja region, we’re truly in seventh heaven.

That’s why here at Urban List, we’ve made our way through the Margs wineries you can count on to provide mouth-watering bites and silky-smooth vino, idyllic for an afternoon of indulgence that can stretch on as long as you’ve got room for more.

Leeuwin Estate

Stevens Rd, Witchcliffe WA 6286

One of the founding wineries of the Margaret River district, Leeuwin Estate is a seamless blend of sleek modern architecture and cosy wooden accents, not to mention the biophilic design that allows you to truly disconnect from your everyday hustle and bustle.

Once you’ve taken a seat on the sweeping veranda (ground level or balcony, the view of the vineyards and karri trees is equally enchanting), settle in and select from the seasonal three course menu, or give your tastebuds a treat and book the six-course tasting. Either way, your dish will be expertly partnered with wine that makes it sing, so that wine pairing dilemma is totally taken care of. Although, if you want my opinion, their Art Series Chardonnay is a fruity, oaky delight that you’ll be tempted to pair with every dish anyway.

The real gem that glistens in Leeuwin is their beloved Estate Art Gallery, showcasing over 150 contemporary Australian artworks that feature on their iconic Art Series wine labels. The best bit? You can tie everything together by booking an experience package including a guided gallery tour, a tutored tasting, and a farm-to-fork luncheon that properly celebrates fine dining and fine wining, as mother nature intended.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • The Cellar Door is open from 10am-5pm every day for curated wine tastings and cheese boards, no booking required
  • Leeuwin is the perfect venue for a special occasion, with an alfresco space cascading with wisteria and its own private function room

Lesser known but just as lush, Wise Wine is the hidden gem in Eagle Bay serving up high-quality wines, small batch spirits, and panoramic ocean views. Being the only Margaret River winery with an ocean backdrop really makes it a must-visit, not to mention the luscious forest scenery and romantic purple wisteria flowers that will leave you utterly bewitched.

The walk-in only cellar door fosters a peaceful tasting experience as you work through their vibrant wine collection (go for the Margaret River Chardonnay for an unforgettable citrussy stone fruit fusion), not to mention their aromatic home-brewed gin. And right next door you’ll find their award-winning restaurant dishing up decadent seasonal meals made from locally sourced produce, catering for the early-rising breakfasters (because it’s 5 o’clock somewhere?) and the classic long lunch crowd. You can also book in for a three-course chef’s pick from Monday to Friday that will truly allow you to while away your afternoon on their sun-soaked balcony, with delicacies like chargrilled Geographe Bay octopus and crispy pork belly on offer.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • $15 tasting fees are redeemable on purchase, giving you all the incentive to take your favs home with you
  • Did someone say free wine? Mondays and Thursdays offer a complimentary glass of wine ordered with any main meal!

In a region full of generational vineyards, Fishbone Winery is the modern addition that we needed to spice up the Margaret River dining scene. The restaurant has a sophisticated elegance without feeling pretentious, with paintings from local artists dotting the walls and a fish-filled aquarium down the middle that adds a chic flourish to your lunch experience.

Indulge in a truly unique Japanese-inspired feast designed to be shared, from smaller plates of edamame and gyoza, to traditional Japanese sushi rolls that taste so fresh, you won’t be able to go back to the 7/11 variety. Par for the course, the wine is exquisite too, with their purist approach producing several award-winning bottles including their coveted Joseph River Reserve label, and imported sake available for anyone wanting a real Japanese culinary experience.

Settle in on the terrace and allow the sloping vineyard views and tranquillity of the nearby Wilyabrup brook to cleanse your mind while you clean your plate, the dream spot for an intimate lunch with your besties.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • I’m still fantasising about their miso dengaku salad, AKA the most delicious deep-fried eggplant you’ll ever try
  • Fishbone also offers sushi rolls and chilled wine for takeaway
  • The Margaret River Chocolate Factory is right across the road for a cute dessert moment (yep, they still provide the free chocolate samples)

When Amelia Park wines opened in 2009, they immediately made a splash with first-class wine and an upscale cellar that sets the tone for a luxurious afternoon. The building is architecturally stunning, with polished wooden detailing and tasting areas flooded with natural light from the window walls overlooking Wilyabrup’s viridescent valley. Book a backstage pass into their barrel room to see where the magic happens, and relish in a wine tasting from handpicked grapes aged in authentic French oak barrels.

Once you’ve sipped your way through the cellar door, head to the neighbouring family-owned Amelia Park restaurant to extend your visit with a swanky long lunch from their à la carte menu. The  kitchen leads the way with fresh ingredients, bistro-style food and local produce that is easily shareable and delicately crafted, while husband and wife owners Blair and Renee are running the front of house with a friendliness that makes you feel like one of the team. They’ll help you pair your meal with the wine it deserves, from their celebrated 2024 Amelia Park Semillon Sav B to cellared classics in their museum collection.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • Wine tasting fees are redeemable with any purchase, and perfectly paired with their cheese and charcuterie boards
  • Book a table on the balcony for a dazzling vineyard milieu, prime for a celebratory drink or anniversary lunch

From the exposed brick walls to the repurposed barrel tables, Skigh Wine provides the wholesome rustic backdrop ideal for a languid afternoon spent with your nearest and dearest. You can choose from a variety of tasting experiences in their adorably converted barn, but the ‘backstage pass’ is my pick if you really want to spoil yourself: 90 minutes to enjoy over 25 tastings, including a sneak peek at future releases and 20% off any purchase. Plus, their wines are designed with a slightly lower alcohol content and lively acidity that’s refreshing and unique, sourced from their own organic vineyards.

Of course, you can’t visit Skigh Wine without wandering into the garden for a relaxed bite designed to share, including grazing platters, hampers, or the old-faithful cheeseboard. If you time it right, you might also jag their Sunday Sounds session, where the last Sunday of each month sees the garden host local musical talent to soundtrack your sipping and swirling among the peppermint trees.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • The Elsie Cab Sav is the leading lady of this one
  • These guys are totally kid friendly (both fur baby and actual baby), perfect for a casual family outing—and feel free to bring your own picnic!

Hay Shed Hill

Hay Shed Hill dining area

Hay Shed Hill is not only one of the region’s oldest vineyards, but truly a pioneer of the wine that gives Margaret River its legendary status. Owner and winemaker Michael Kerrigan is one of Australia’s best, and his reds especially are something to be admired. He also spearheaded the Kerrigan + Berry wine collab that sees him join forces with Gavin Berry of the Great Southern wine region, putting regional rivalry aside to source the highest quality grapes in WA (and you can taste the difference).

You’ll want to visit Hay Shed Hill’s Rústico restaurant with plenty of room in your stomach, because their seasonally updated tapas degustation is foodie heaven. With nine Mediterranean-style dishes over five lavish courses, this is a dining experience that caters to everyone (and of course, there are several tried and tested wine pairings on offer, including sangria!).

Now for my favourite part: the $45 Wine Blending Experience that allows you to concoct your own personalised cabernet blend. Okay, vintner era!

INSIDER INTEL:
  • Their degustation lunch has vegan-friendly and kid-friendly menu alternatives
  • Hay Shed also offers a Wine & Chocolate Pairing that provides a surprisingly harmonious flavour combo

Quirky, creative, and comfy-cosy, Swings & Roundabouts has a warmth that welcomes you in as soon as you step foot through the arching entrance. A cheeky play on words, this winery is all about celebrating the complexities of wine production and immersing people in the process, from their charming outdoor Kombi bar to their cellar door vineyard tours.

The indoor seating is snug and simple, but if you step outside, you’ll be greeted with a sprawling backyard that offers a relaxed dining experience and plenty of play areas for the littles, surrounded by native bushland and a lake view that’ll make you melt. Enjoy their modern Australian menu, where smoky woodfire pizza is the standout, and Mediterranean style wines including my absolute favourite rosé in WA. Swings & Roundabouts is ideal for anyone wanting a classy winery lunch that still feels homey, making it a fab stop on that group road trip you’ve been trying to organise.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • Park yourself on their iconic swinging seats overlooking the vineyards for an extra bit of fun
  • Watch out for the ice cream cabin in the warmer months!

Known for its rambling hills and divine Victorian style buildings, Aravina Estate is a picturesque celebration of lovingly fermented wine and locally produced food. They’re using some of the world’s most sustainable, natural viticultural techniques to create wine with a crisp acidity that will leave you breathless, and the cool thing is the entire process is completed on-site.

Get glammed up to book a table on their covered terrace and order à la carte or table d’hôte, or if the French is too confusing then just queue up at the pizza bar and get comfy at a picnic table. Whatever you choose, you’ll be rewarded with a glittering lake view and surrounded by 180 acres of stretching vineyards and hydrangeas, so you can’t go wrong.

And, bonus, you can follow up your lunch by perusing WA’s first official Surfing Museum at Aravina, because if Margaret River’s crowning jewel isn’t wine, it’s the tubular waves.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • Wine tastings are $10 per person, or complimentary with any lunch booking
  • Saturdays will see Aravina humming with live music from 12:30-3:30pm, the musical accompaniment every long lunch deserves

Heading further south towards Augusta will take you past a dreamy, homespun farm and vineyard that welcomes you in all the way from the carpark. Glenarty Road is family-run and ecologically orientated, nursing their wine from ground to glass and harvesting their 240 acres of rich land to get top shelf produce. There’s a homely joy emanating from this winery, and you can feel it in every bite and sip.

Dining here is a simple affair that packs a punch with taste and sustainability, raising their sheep, pigs and cows and regeneratively growing their own fruit and veggies for farm-to-fork bliss. Order five or three courses from the set menu, joined by their fruity single estate wines. All of this is ready to be enjoyed in their charming dining area, a renovated timber-framed shed originally built by the family’s grandfather in the 1940s and standing strong for five generations. You can even organise a mobile tasting to properly explore the farm, garden and vineyards, a real slice of paradise.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • Outdoor lover with a bit of a green thumb? Definitely book in for one of their interactive tasting experiences to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna
  • Enjoy a more casual tasting for $10 that includes freshly baked bread and house-made cheese (no need to book!)
  • There’s also a kids set menu, so they can get the full experience too

Polishing off the list with the oldest winery in Margaret River, Vasse Felix is a genuine piece of the region’s history, with a gentle luxury that radiates throughout the contemporary yet simple wooden décor and panoramic window views. Critically acclaimed small batch wines with minimal intervention are the focus point, and they go down super smoothly with the scenic vista of the manicured vineyards that seem to stretch forever.

The Vasse Felix Restaurant is also one of Australia’s most awarded, emphasising modern Australian cuisine where you can choose the freedom of ordering à la carte or the comfort of being guided by the chef’s tasting menu. Before you enter a serious food coma, you should wander downstairs and feast your eyes on their wine museum and art gallery, showcasing exhibitions from the celebrated Holmes à Court Collection in a lofty space that exudes class.

INSIDER INTEL:
  • The 2023 Heytesbury Chardonnay was named the 2026 Wine of the Year by the Halliday tasting panel, and it’s worth all the hype
  • Cullen Wine might’ve recently closed their restaurant (devo!), but their one-of-a-kind biodynamic wine tasting room is only 1km away
  • Vasse Felix has loads of immersive experiences that allow you to tour all throughout the vineyards, barrel room and cellar door, with plenty of tasting stops for when you get thirsty
