Mediterranean summer? Not this year. As Perth’s winter settles in, our editor Dani is trading aperitivo hour on the Riviera for something comforting, cosy and closer to home—handmade pasta spots, neighbourhood wine bars and dimly lit dining rooms made for long winter nights.

And thanks to American Express delicious. Month Out,  eligible Amex Card Members can redeem an exclusive Amex Offer at these spots.*

Now all that’s left is to explore our editor-approved spots, get cosy, dine well, and let Amex delicious. Month Out take care of the savings.

Vin Populi

9-13 High Street, Fremantle, WA 6160

When it’s chilly, drizzly and bleak outside, there are few better fixes than twirling your way through a bowl of tagliatelle ossobuco with a glass of red in hand at Vin Populi. Tucked away down the quieter end of Fremantle’s High Street, Vin Pop is the antidote to Perth's seasonal malaise. Take your pick from one of the many pastas and proteins scrawled across the chic chalkboard menu, chat to the switched-on waitstaff about a wine to suit your mood, and settle into this little slice of Europe in Freo’s West End.

Testun

12/760 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley WA 6050

Mount Lawley’s pasta playground Testun is like a big ol’ hug from Nonna. From the eclectic interiors and quirky knick-knacks to the warm, welcoming service and carb-heavy menu, this neo-Italo neighbourhood osteria is approachable, affordable and absolutely delicious. Expect bold flavours, saucy starters, handmade pastas and unpretentious wines. Still not convinced?

Le Rebelle

676 Beaufort St, Mount Lawley WA 6050

Oh, la la—Beaufort Street’s romantic French bistro Le Rebelle brings that certain je ne sais quoi to Mount Lawley all year round. The menu features familiar European favourites, like escargot swimming in an irresistible garlic butter, steak tartare alongside a hot heap of frites, glazed Wagin duck with a gravy boat of béarnaise sauce, plus a dedicated fromage menu for the serious turophiles.

Cosy Del’s

15 Lathlain Pl, Lathlain WA 6100

The name doesn't lie—Cosy Del’s really is as snug as it sounds. Located just beyond Vic Park Station in leafy Lathlain, this intimate little Italian proves you don’t need a big space to make a big impression, with warm lighting, a central open kitchen, comfy booths and only a handful of alfresco tables. The ever-changing menu shifts with the seasons, but it’s the housemade pastas that keep locals returning time and time again. Squid ink casarecce, sausage-studded maccheroni, Ligurian-style pesto spaghetti… whatever lands on your table, it tends to disappear quickly. Don’t skip dessert, either—the tiramisu is molto bene.

Il Falco

214 Scarborough Beach Rd, Mount Hawthorn WA 6016

Inside a converted garage on Scarborough Beach Road, Il Falco is churning out cheesy, charred discs of dough worth leaving the house for in rain, hail or shine. Blistered crusts, thin-but-sturdy bases, and top-tier toppings that make the most of local produce, this laidback pizza bar keeps everyone happy, from classic margheritas done right through to spicier numbers like the Inferno loaded with sopressa, nduja and fresh chilli. There’s even a lineup of separate sauces strictly for crust-dunking duties. You don’t have to let a cold spell interrupt a good slice, either—long tables run opposite the grand Marana pizza oven inside, and there’s heaters and blankies outside to keep you cosy while you carb-load.

Lulu La Delizia

5/97 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco WA 6008

There’s a very good reason people will cross town, brave the weather and happily wait for a table at Lulu La Delizia. The long-standing Subi staple has been slinging some of the very best pastas on this side of the equator since 2016. Go for the ever-changing pasta special and you could be devouring perfect triangles of seafood triangoli, rich braised rabbit paccheri or silky lobster bigoli, best tackled with a Negroni, a glass of vino or potent Italian espresso to finish.

Brika

3/177 Stirling St, Perth WA 6000

Cold nights and communal plates are a very good match at Brika, Northbridge’s long-running meze bar. Since opening in 2013, it’s built its name on Greek-inspired dishes made for sharing, with restraint having no place at the dining table. Saganaki, charcoal-grilled octopus, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, eggplant moussaka and more arrive fast and fresh, with plates being licked clean even faster.

Bib & Tucker

18 Leighton Beach Blvd, North Fremantle WA 6159

Seaside dining might be synonymous with summer, but when there’s a winter storm rolling in and the ocean’s putting on a show, Bib & Tucker gives you a front row seat to the action. Perched up above Leighton Beach right on the water and open through morning ‘til night, this is the place to hunker down with something hearty while the swell crashes on the horizon. The menu is anchored by local seafood, complemented by a selection of shareable snacks, woodfired mains and signature sweets.

Casa

399 Oxford St, Mount Hawthorn WA 6016

Wondering where all the cool cats are hanging out this winter? There’s a good chance it’s at Casa, Mount Hawthorn’s low-lit wine bar and restaurant that’s very effective in combatting the cold. Inside, you’ll find a well-chosen wine list and a thoughtful edit of small plates, built for grazing, sharing and squeezing in another. The wine list is equally as thoughtful, with a focus on low-intervention wines that go down a little too easily.
