Everything You Need To Know About This Weekend’s OnWilliam Streetside Festival

By Kirsty Petrides - 05 Feb 2016

As if there wasn’t enough to keep you entertained in Perth at the moment, this weekend we’ll really be spoilt for choice as William Street comes alive with the Streetside Festival.

Kicking off at 11am tomorrow, the north end of William (between Roe and Brisbane Streets) will be abuzz with exhibitions, music, food stalls, performances, free workshops and street games.

We know lots of options can get a bit overwhelming, so we’re here to help you out (we’re pretty generous like that). Here are a few of our favourite picks from this weekend's OnWilliam Streetside Festival.

Secret Garden At Little Willy’s

This cafe is awesome on any given day, but to celebrate Streetside, the folks at Little Willy’s are extending out their alfresco area at the front, as well as adding a hidden bar out the back. Pop in for some summer treats.

Free Special Edition Northbridge Magnets!

Who doesn’t love free stuff? If you reckon you don’t, you’re lying. Wander along William Street and collect the free 27-piece special edition magnet set from 27 locations throughout Northbridge. Featuring artwork by local artist Magali Dincher, you’re not only getting free stuff but also supporting our home grown artists. Plus, every time you open the fridge, you’ll remember what a rad time you had at the Streetside Festival. Oh so many reasons to get collecting. Check the website for the collection points.

Beer Tasting At Baby Mammoth

Fancy a lunch time froffie? Head to Baby Mammoth, where the good people from Feral Brewing Co will be there especially for Streetside, showcasing five beers from their Brewpub series and pairing them with some delicious food creations. $60 will get you your tastings and food, plus brewer Will Irving will be there to have a chat, answer questions and just have a general blast with all you beer lovers.

Eco-Friendly Shopping

It’s a scientific fact that you can’t feel guilty about shopping when you’re technically helping the planet by doing so. There’ll be a huge range of market stalls housing ethically sourced and sustainably made wares—like Paper Crab, who do handcrafted jewellery, bags and accessories; Cellardoor Creations, who will have homewares made from aged wine barrels and recycled wine bottles; and Living Life Naturally, who will be selling clothing handmade in Nepal. So make like Captain Planet and his Planeteers. The power is yours.

Spanish Sambos

Don’t have breakfast on Saturday, because you will want to sample something from every food stall you walk past at Streetside—especially Comprehende, who will be dishing up their sandwiches inspired by Barcelona. Featuring bread made from local bakers in Perth, and filled with locally sourced meat and vegetables. Yum.

Street Sprays With John Kaye

Aussie street artist John Kaye is set to brighten William Street with a new mural to be created for Streetside. Constantly chasing art, graffiti and travel, John has been smashing out an incredible array of gallery and street work in recent years. Head down to The Grid at 310 William Street from 11am to see him in action.

Vietnamese Street Food At Lido

Lido, a Northbridge institution. These guys do pho like it's no one’s business, but this weekend you can really pretend you’re kicking it on the streets of Vietnam, with Lido setting up a street food stall especially for the festival. They’ll be selecting a few of their favourite dishes and serving them up kerb-side. Nom nom.

Get Your Valentine’s Day Shopping Done

Hey fellas, take note—it's Valentine’s Day next Sunday. If you haven’t already bought your lady a giant stuffed teddy holding a heart-shaped box of chocolates, get down to some of these local jewellery stalls. Mia Design, ZÖKITEE, The Bunny and Cirkus Charm will all be selling their unique and locally crafted jewellery. You’ll be supporting these local talents and also earning some serious brownie points for the thoughtful gift. Result.

Sweet Tooth?

Sweetly Baked Perth will have their unique cupcakes, cookies and desserts on offer at their very own food stall. And for the gluten intolerant folks out there, don’t be dismayed just yet—the team at Just Crème Brulees will have their 100% gluten free crème brulees at Streetside as well, flamed to order. Um, yes please.

Eat The Street Walking Tours

The past few years have seen Northbridge’s culinary scene explode, and it’s hard to keep up with new places to eat and drink. Luckily the good people at Eat The Street Walking Tours have got you covered. As part of Streetside, they’ll be running free tours, exploring the streets of Northbridge and bringing you a behind the scenes look at both new and old Northbridge establishments. Tours run for roughly 90 minutes, with four departure times per day and 15 spots in each. Spaces are limited so head to their website to snap one up toot sweet.

Fancy a show? Take a break from trawling the streets and head in to the State Theatre, where the Black Swan State Theatre Company is presenting Loaded: A Double Bill of New Plays. This showcase features some of WA’s rising stars fresh out of WAAPA. So get in there quick and witness their talents while you still can, before they make like Hugh Jackman and become totes famous. Show times at 4pm, 6pm and 8pm with tickets available on Ticketek.

Gunns At The Bird

Described as surfpop-meets-party rock, Gunns have been making new sounds and are gearing up for fun tour times. Saturday night they’ll be rocking out at The Bird, with an uber-impressive support line up including The Spunloves and the ever-talented Ben Witt. From 8pm, tickets are $5 at the door.
