Western Australia has some of the most incredible landscapes and road trip opportunities in the world. From all the breathtaking sites in Karijini to David Attenborough’s fave, Horizontal Falls, there’s a lot to choose from. So it’s easy to see how somewhere like Wave Rock—the monster prehistoric rock formation four hours inland from Perth—might get overlooked.

If you’re still on the fence about whether the trip to Wave Rock is worth it, though, this magical colour-changing salt lake and therapeutic man made saltwater pool right next to it might be enough to sway you.

Located in the Ballardong region, just 800 metres away from the incredible Wave Rock landmark, is Lake Magic. You could say it's the chameleon of lakes—changing colour throughout the day, with bright yellow hues during the day and stunning orange tones at sunset. Surrounded by soft white sand, this naturally ocurring salt lake is a great spot to throw down a towel and soak up the surreal views. Just make sure you bring a camera so you can capture a piece of it.

And while that’s pretty (dare we say) magical, we’re actually more interested in what’s set up next to it—a man made saltwater pool with buoyancy and therapeutic properties greater than that of the Dead Sea where you can lie back, float around and relax without a care in the world. If you’re into saltwater float pods, think of this as the outdoor, less claustrophobic, group-friendly version.

Even better, they’ve recently updated the pool area so you can chill out in one of the swinging day beds and really make the most of those zen vibes. And if you manage to visit during the annual Wave Rock Weekender music festival you'll be spoilt with stunning background tunes too.

If you want to make a night of it (why not?), you can stay at the neighbouring Wave Rock Resort which provides simple cottages overlooking Lake Magic and Wave Rock, kitted out with all the essentials you need. From there you can of course hit up the iconic Wave Rock itself, or scope out some of the cool caves, walking trails, or local wildlife on offer. We'd also recommend taking the time for an Indigenous tour, where you can learn all about the rich Aboriginal history and significance of the area.

Come dinner time, head into Wave Rock Bar And Bistro in Hyden for a classic parma and a pint. Then once the sun goes down settle in for some stargazing, because it's bloody beautiful out there.
