A Playlist-Led Pilates Studio From A Former DJ Makes The Move West

Perth’s Pilates scene is hardly short on places to pulse and plank, but this East Coast import is betting that a seriously good playlist can still turn up the energy.

Already established across Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra, Love Athletica is making its first forway west with a new Nedlands studio. Set to open at Nedlands Square this October, expect athletic reformer, heated mat classes and a workout soundtrack better than most.

Husband-and-wife founders Mat and Caroline Knipe have built Love Athletica with music firmly at its centre, a callback to Mat’s decade working in the music industry and five years spent DJing before launching the brand in 2018. Rather than simply throwing a high-energy playlist on in the background, each class is intentionally soundtracked around the movement, building in energy alongside the workout before bringing things back down again.

The new Nedlands studio will bring the brand’s full workout roster west, spanning Athletic Reformer, Functional Strength Reformer, Hot Mat Pilates, Hot Functional Strength and Heated Yoga. There’ll be 16 reformers alongside a 33-mat hot room heated to a suitably sweaty 35 degrees.

Post-class, a bank of three showers and a dedicated beauty bar get you moving into your day without looking like you’ve just spent an hour exercising in 35-degree heat.

Design lead Caroline is also bringing Love Athletica’s minimalist aesthetic to the new outpost, pairing bright, light-filled reformer spaces with a darker, moodier hot studio. In keeping with the brand’s music obsession, the studio will feature a bespoke neon lyric like its sister studios. 

And while Nedlands might be Love Athletica's first studio, don't expect it to be its last. 

Love Athletica Nedlands is set to open at Nedlands Square in October, with memberships starting from $50 per week and casual classes from $36.
