George Kailis Is Bringing A 70s Inspired Wholefoods Restaurant To The Former Barchetta Site

Perth's undisputed king of coastal dining, George Kailis (KHG), recently acquired the old Barchetta site in Cottesloe and all the magical beach views that come along with it.

It's a change we're pretty excited about, given he's already mastered the beachside experience across his group's other venues like The Shorehouse and Island Market and Canteen in Trigg.

Now, after a month of speculation, he's finally revealed what he has in mind for the space and it's a concept that has roots back to a 1970s juice bar in Freo Markets.

Introducing Magic Apple Wholefoods, a new restaurant and health food retailer dedicated to mindful nourishment and inspired by memories of delving into carob choccies, fresh juices and other healthy treats on visits to the old Magic Apple health shops his mum would take him to as a kid.

The original Magic Apple brand can be traced back to a 1970s juice bar in Freo Markets, but they soon expanded to a string of larger health food restaurants across Perth—all sportin' menus dedicated to the healthiest eats.

When Kailis realised the old brand and trademarks had lapsed, he jumped on the chance to bring it back. And where better to bring the reimagined vision to life than Barchetta's gorgeous coastal site?

You'll be able to pull in after your beach walk for smoothie bowls, acai and oatmeal on tap, as well as house brewed tonics and elixirs, fresh juices and protein smoothies. Then come back for more substantial feeds, with a wholesome menu of quality veg and protein, all informed by their dedicated nutritionist.

It'll be a gamechanger for anyone living the vegan lifestyle or eating with allergies. Plus, with transparent calorie, protein and macro deets for each dish, everyday fitness enthusiasts will feel right at home too.

As for beverages, non-alc options will be a massive focus, but there'll still be a small but mighty booze list too that centres around local natural wines, local tap beers and a cocktail list that leans on their house made tonics. It's all about balance, right?

The final look and feel of the space itself is still being nutted out with help from global interior design specialist, Stickman Tribe, but they have dropped some initial brand assets that hint at where they plan to take things. It's very much leaning into the retro 70s style aesthetic, with a big nod to nature and all things organic. For now though, we'll just have to wait and see.

For now, you can head to the best restaurants in Perth.
