speaking event

We can all agree that higher learning is a lot more digestible when there’s a cheeky bevvy or two involved. Now thanks to a bunch of savvy speakers from The University of Western Australia you have the chance to have a pint or a pinot with some of Perth’s most well-known professors.

Interested? Raising The Bar is the must-attend event that will see 10 top researchers from The University of Western Australia share their expert perspectives and insights in a series of no-cost talks at five of the CBD’s best bars.

These intimate convos will cover themes and issues relating to the future of food, wellness, sustainability, the planet and more. The best part? These chats are all taking place in a relaxed bar environment which of course means you can expect to pair your evening of learning with a tipple.

Sound like a good time? Taking place on Tuesday 29 October, we've pulled together a snapshot of the events happening at this year’s Raising The Bar so you know exactly what you can expect from this smart meets social event.

Served With A Side Of Science

We're definitely guilty of filling our hedonic hunger here at Urban List, but we’re also acutely aware of the impact that food producers (and consequently food waste) has on the environment. Dr Heather Bray will be at Market Grounds, sharing her 25 years’ of experience and talking through the new technologies in development that can help you decide what should and shouldn’t be on your plate during your next meal. We recommend you come hungry for knowledge with this one.

After years of research, Professor Mayowa Babalola knows better than anyone that the lines between work, family and technologies are more often than not slightly blurred. Specifically looking at the workplace, he’ll reveal how our world’s top leaders orchestrate a delicate balance between people and profit, as well as work and family life. A Plate Of Plastic

Itsy, bitsy marine bacteria are the real MVP in Ms Anna Faber’s talk about tackling plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. In this fascinating chat, Anna will share how she, with the help from her UWA colleagues, has been teaching said marine bacteria to munch on certain types of plastic in seawater conditions. Sounds delicious, right?

From Blandscapes to Brutopianscapes

Once known as Australia’s sleepiest city, our little ol’ Perth is now characterised by a dynamic evolving mosaic of (sub)urban landscapes according to Associate Professor and Director of the UWA Public Policy Institute Paul Maginn. This poses the question, is it a suburban dream or nightmare?

How Far Is Too Far?

Less rainfall and higher temperatures, it's not looking good for the endangered species of our world. Though we are responsible for much of their demise, we can also help give our threatened creatures a fighting chance of survival through a little something called assisted colonisation (AC). At The Stables, Associate Professor Nicki Mitchell will share the early results of what we think she should trademark as AC. One of the first of its kind worldwide, the subject for her exciting experiment is with a local and extremely adorable endangered freshwater tortoise.
