While tracking down a good woodfired Italian-style pizza in Freo is pretty straightforward, there’s definitely a New York style pizza-shaped hole needing to be filled. Well, that’s where our new friend Tony Pepperoni comes in.
Every Friday to Sunday (and Wednesdays for students—but we’ll talk about that later), The Newport Hotel will hand over their kitchen to Tony Pepperoni so that he can work his crispy, cheesy, flavour-packed magic. Making sure only the nicest slices land on your table, Tony Pep’s pizzas are made with hand-stretched dough, secret recipe napoli sauce and layers of gooey cheese.
Speaking of nice slices, the classic margherita is a must-try thanks to its perfect ratio of sweet, zingy tomato sauce to molten buffalo mozzarella—or vegan cheese for the plant-based pizza lovers out there. For a meatier option, you really can’t go past the fan-favourite meatball pizza which is coated with authentic tomato and basil sauce, a generous helping of mozzarella and of course, some delish homemade meatballs. We’re drooling just thinking about it.
When it comes to sides (and size), it’s pretty hard to leave any space because Tony Pepperoni’s pizzas are larger than the table, but trust us when we say you’re going to want to leave room in your belly for at least one of the offerings from the spring roll servery. They’ve got cheeseburger spring rolls with special sauce, bacon and egg with BBQ sauce and for the sweet tooths, apple pie spring rolls with cream. Other snacks include mozzarella sticks, pumpkin and feta arancini, jalapeno poppers with cream cheese and juicy southern style chicken wings—yum.
Tony Pep’s is open from 5pm until late from Friday to Sunday every weekend, so it’s the perfect place to feast with friends or stop by after a night out—especially when you can also get your hands on this carby, cheesy goodness by the slice. If you’re a student, from 8pm on Wednesdays you can even save some coin and score yourself a slice for just $2 at The Newport’s Off Campus student night.
