10 Awesome Things To Do On The Sunshine Coast This January

And that’s a wrap. 2018 is officially done and dusted and its time to welcome a brand-new year. Whether you’re writing down resolutions, heading back to work, or still on a high from Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations, January is a time of fresh starts and new beginnings. And what better way to kick off the new year than to get out and enjoy the best events the Coast has to offer this month. Whether you want to kickstart your resolutions with a cooking class or are looking to rock out at the Sunshine Coast’s biggest rock and roll festival, the good old Sunny Coast has something for everyone on this month.

Nights On Ocean | Friday 4 January

The Coast’s most loved markets are back and better than ever in 2019 and will be happening every Friday in January. Local designers, artists, performers and producers will all be there, as well as the best food you can find on the coast. With an eclectic mix of stallholders including jewellery, artwork, craft, homewares and clothing, as well as pop-art and up-cycled creations and collectables, Nights on Ocean really has something for everyone.

Coolum Flicks In The Park | Saturday 5 January

Enjoy a movie under the stars at Coolum Flicks in the Park. Bring along a rug, pillows and some snacks for the ultimate outdoor movie experience. The screening will be of Disney’s animated (and adorable) film Coco, so all ages are welcome at the event. Keep an eye on their upcoming events, because Coolum Business and Tourism are putting on a film every week in January. Don’t forget the popcorn.

The Beautiful Girls At Solbar | Sunday 6 January

Fresh from a successful European tour in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, The Beautiful Girls are bringing their much-loved coastal tunes home for summer. As part of their Beautiful World Tour, frontman Mat McHugh and his bandmates will be bringing their show to Solbar and giving us a taste of what’s in store for their upcoming album. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just love getting your boogie on to a good tune, this is one Solbar gig you don’t want to miss.

Peregian Beach Markets | Sunday 6 January

Well known for its variety (and delicious food) the Peregian Beach Markets are a great way to get your year off to a good start. Pick up some fresh produce to help with those diet resolutions and spend hours marvelling at the intricate handmade goods, arts, crafts, jewellery and upcycled clothing while enjoying the live entertainment provided by the talented buskers. Then once you’re done perusing, grab a smoothie to go and head to the nearby beach for a swim and to relax in the sun. Now that’s a great way to while away the first Sunday of the year.

Sunshine Coast Guitar Festival | Monday 7 January

Guitar fanatics rejoice, the Sunshine Coast Guitar Festival is back for another year, and this time some of Australia’s best guitarists will be there with their bands in tow. Big names in the business like Simon Gardner, Tim Gaze, Phil Emmanuel and Kevin Borich Express will all be there showcasing their talents, and there’ll be an hour-long Q&A up close and personal with the pros so you can get some tips for yourself. You’ll be shredding in no time.

Calling All Teenage Girls | Monday 7 January

Okay, so if you aren’t a teenage girl or you don’t personally know a teenage girl, then this may not be the event for you. But if you are a teenage girl, you have a teenage daughter or you know a young girl in need of some self-love, then you’ll want to hear about this event. Hosted by Beautiful Minds Australia, this is a one-day workshop for girls aged 12 to 17. It focuses on how to deal with anxiety, how to value yourself, as well as general life skills and inspiration. It also gives teens an opportunity to bond with other young girls who may be going through the same things and gives them an opportunity to bond. What better way to kick off the year than with a little bit of self-love?

Red Hot Chilli Pepper Mediterranean Cooking Class | Saturday 12 January

Always wanted to cook like a Masterchef but never learnt how? Well now’s your chance. The Red Hot Chilli Pepper cooking class will take you through the cuisines of Italy, Greece, Turkey and Spain, with a particular focus on the herbs and spices used in traditional dishes. Ginger Flower And Food Festival | Friday 18 to Sunday 20 January

The Ginger Factory and Buderim Ginger have partnered up to bring back the Ginger Flower and Food Festival for another year. Think three days of gorgeous flowers, parades, delicious food, live entertainment and the best ginger beer on the coast. Keep an eye on their website for more details coming soon.

Under The Southern Stars | Sunday 20 January

The ultimate summer rock festival Under The Southern Stars is back for another year after the success of its inaugural event in 2018. This year’s line-up boasts big headliners, including the Hoodoo Gurus, British India, You Am I and Sheppard. There’ll also be plenty of food vendors and other entertainment happening on the day, so be sure to get your tickets now to secure your spot.
