Listen up guys! There’s more to July than cold weather and crying over not being in Europe like the rest of your Facebook newsfeed. So stop whining, put on your favourite coat and check out these new restaurants and cafés in Sydney!
The entrance to this new Sydney bar will open from mid July, and we're pretty excited to say the least. Head to Tank Stream Way (aka where all the cool kids are), up the stairs and past the suits. On your way up to the rooftop (yes, there's a rooftop!), stop to admire the artwork from street artist, Lister. Taylor's will be a very welcome addition to the CBD, offering casual, moreish lunches alongside craft beers and botanical cocktails to match the green walling. It's set to become your perfect little getaway from the office, and the perfect destination after work, especially when the beats from ETCETC start pumping.
Lan Yuan Restaurant
In an attempt to fill the void of traditional, authentic Cantonese food in the northwest of Sydney, chef Shawn Ren recently opened the doors to Lan Yuan Restaurant in Top Ryde shopping centre. With a name translating to "bamboo garden", the décor has a decidedly bamboo-garden feel, which makes for a very serene environment. Besides their darn good house-made dumplings, Lan Yuan also offers contemporary Cantonese dishes such as whole barbeque duck and cumin lamb cutlets. And the best part? Each meal can be paired with an array of boutique beers, wines and cocktails!
Salt Meats Cheese
Everyone knows about the famous Salt Meats Cheese deli in Alexandria, but did you know one recently opened in the peaceful lower north shore suburb of Mosman? This gourmet Italian providore offers a divine selection of the finest imported and local meats, cheeses and deli products. With a vision to provide customers with superior ingredients and share their passion for fine food and cooking, Salt Meats Cheese warehouses allow patrons to embark upon a culinary experience that will make you think twice about ever visiting a conventional grocer again!
If you’re a local who has been intrigued by the brightly coloured “who is Luis Tans” posters popping up all over Bondi, we are here to answer all your questions. Brain child of former Big Brother winner Ryan Ginns, and Amazing Race contestant bestie Nathan Jolliffe, Luis Tans is an upcoming Asian/South American fusion bar and restaurant opening in the arcade between Gould Street and Campbell Parade. While the food menu is still a little ambiguous, clues suggest it will feature Latin American dishes with an Asian influence, including plenty of healthy vegetarian and vegan options. If social media is anything to go by, Luis Tans is going to be a very well known and popular joint, so prepare for some lines on its opening date, the 7th of July.
Greek at The Belvedere
If you’re not actually in Greece this month, eating at The Belvedere is the next best thing! Recently opening in the busy The Belvedere hotel, this new Sydney restaurant is a cosy space serving up a mix of traditional and modern Greek cuisine. If you want to truly embrace Greek eating habits, start off your meal with some warmed seasoned pita bread and olives, followed by an authentic Greek salad where the fetta comes in slabs and there is not a shred of lettuce in sight! We also recommend trying the succulent lamb shoulder, which comes with a delicious side of potatoes and creamy tzatziki. Whatever you order, be sure to wear loose pants because the servings are generous and it’s awfully hard not to order everything on the menu!
Drake is a new Sydney restaurant located in the heart of Bondi that is headed up by award-winning chef Ian Oakes. Situated on the corner of Curlewis and Gould Streets, this eatery offers an all-day menu and is the ultimate chill spot to take you from breakfast to dinner. Drake offers local craft beer and a focus on local, organic, fresh and delicious food, so it’s already a winner in our books. Do yourself a favour and order the duck, it’s Oakes’ signature dish and perfect for a chilly winter night.
The Boathouse Shelly Beach
Synonymous with beautiful ocean views, Instagrammable breakfast plates, and modern beach style interiors, The Boathouse group has opened its latest venture in Shelly Beach. With a menu that takes you from breakfast to cocktails, this eatery boasts amazing food and equally breathtaking views. So if you’re anything like us and feel like your body could use a dose of vitamin D then take advantage of our own backyard and head to Shelly Beach for a good feed and some warm sun this winter!
Kepos & Co.
If you have recently driven through Waterloo and witnessed a swarm of foodies lining up outside a restaurant, it was probably for a seat at Kepos & Co! Situated at the Casba development on Danks Street, Kepos & Co. is a spin off of Michael Rantissi’s famous Redfern restaurant Kepos Street Kitchen and is serving up some of the best middle-eastern and Mediterranean cuisine in Sydney! With a setting that overlooks tropical palm trees, this eatery makes the perfect winter escape for lunch or dinner any day of the week.
Sutherland’s favourite roaster and brewer White Horse Coffee have expanded its influence to Redfern through the opening of its newest café, Communion Coffee. While this trendy hub boasts a lot of things, such as modern bare wooden décor and killer cronuts, the leading act is definitely the caffeine! For this reason, the weekday menu is kept minimal, purely rotating the best things in life; sandwiches, salads and of course, cronuts! So if your hands need a bit of warming up this July, give Communion Coffee a visit and try their beautiful brew.
Basement 33 is a brand new subterranean bar/pizza fusion just off Goulburn Street. Serving up delicious wood-fire pizza and Italian inspired dishes and an impressive drinks menu, this new nightspot offers the perfect combination of good food, drinks and music in a funky renovated basement. The coolest part is, this place supports local up-and-coming artists, providing them with space to unleash their creativity and work on their art! With its hipster Italian deli vibe and its signature and classic cocktails, we predict Basement 33 to be the next hot spot to wind down after a work or kick-start your nights out in the city!
Bonditony’s Burger Joint
Ahhh Tony, you had us at rock’n’roll burger joint. New Sydney burger restaurant, Bonditony’s Burger Joint has opened up shop in Bondi and is flipping some mean patties. With rock-inspired burger names on the menu, all burgers come with fries, a cool attitude, and a 70s rock soundtrack playing in the background. There’s Young Henrys on tap, a few good wines, and a killer Bloody Mary, for those in need of a drink. Get down to Bonditony’s this month for a burger and some booze, and thank us later.
