Sydney: an ever-growing garden where new venues sprout up almost weekly! Clichéd metaphors aside, we’ve curated a list of the best new Sydney restaurants, bars and fitness studios to keep you busy this month of May. Now get out there, Listers!
The New KX Pilates Bondi Junction Studio
KX Pilates is opening its doors to Bondi Junction and is ready to transform the lives of east-siders, one class at a time. Conveniently located among a bunch of wholefoods and paleo cafes on Oxford Street, this gorgeous new Sydney Pilates studio offers high intensity power workouts that aim to tone your entire body by increasing flexibility, balance and coordination.
These challenging (but we promise fun) 50 minute classes cater to all fitness levels and are the perfect work-outs for when the weather gets cooler and the idea of bracing the cold for a run gets that much harder. So what are you waiting for? Put down that hot chocolate and schedule a class online today!
Attention all lower North Shore folks! No longer do you have to head over the bridge for your after-hours food and drinks fix. The Public is a brand new Scandinavian-style restaurant in Cammeray that is impressing locals with its bright, modern interiors and Mediterranean meals.
If you’re there for lunch, the double beef, double bacon and, yep you guessed it, double cheese wagyu beef burger will, no doubt, doubly impress you. If a light snack is all you’re after, don't go past the chargrilled octopus and pan-fried cheese doused in honey and lemon. There are also family sized platters, an extensive drinks menu and a range of bistro meals to explore, so we won’t judge you if you head over a few or more times just to try it all out.
Uptown @ Brewtown
At The Urban List, it’s no secret that we love eating, coffee and shopping… And this is precisely why we adore O’Connell St Merchants. This new collaborative retail space sits above Brewtown Newtown and carries a diverse range of products that range from homewares to quirky gifts, and fashion. Open from 10am to 4pm daily, this little shop in Newtown is sure to impress you with its homely vibes and quirky wares. Oh, and you can get your cruffin, brewnut, or big breakfast fix downstairs. Score.
The Bach Eatery
Adding to the foodie hub that is King Street Newtown, The Bach Eatery is a restaurant/bar hybrid that offers fun, fresh food with a Kiwi twist. Inspired by those beloved summer days, this Sydney restaurant is becoming a favourite for its locally produced seasonal sharing plates and inviting atmosphere.
We recommend trying the white truffle potato dumplings and 16-hour slow cooked lamb shoulder, featuring delicious pumpkin puree and brussel sprouts. As for drinks, the team offers a range of wine, beers and Kiwi brews—so it's the perfect place to warm up before a night out in town this month.
Luyu & Yum Yum
Cold weather and dumplings are a match made in heaven, which is why this King Street restaurant should be at the top of your list of new Sydney restaurants to try this month. Dedicated to delicious dumplings, this cute eatery boasts the kind of food that satisfies both your tastebuds and Instagram feeds!
Pop in here and order the hedgehog dumplings, which are made with oyster mushrooms, celery, carrots and baby bok choy and look just as cute as they are tasty. Adorable dumplings aside, this Sydney Chinese restaurant also boasts an extensive menu of hearty mains and refreshing cocktails, creating the perfect setting for your next date night.
American themed bars are all the rage at the moment, and Surly’s in Surry Hills is no exception. With its neon beer signs, loud music and wide screen TVs playing live sport, this bar is sure to transport you from Sydney to ‘Murica in a matter of minutes.
For the ultimate American foodie experience, grab a group of friends and order the fried chicken, some sides of mac’n’cheese and the American barbeque plate, featuring beef ribs and two sides of homemade cornbread. Whether you’re there to catch a game or simply after a few beverages, this lively joint is the place to go for a genuine party in the USA.
If you find yourself craving some belissimo cuisine this month, look no further than Besser. Located in the buzzing dining precinct of Surry Hills, this Italian eatery-bar fusion offers authentic Italian meals in a setting inspired by chef di Marino’s childhood family gatherings.
In true Italian style, the menu is based on tasty meals designed to share. If you're after a warm, hearty dinner, try one of their handmade pastas and pair it with a wine on tap. With a group? Order the succulent whole roasted chicken, which is divided at the table for everyone to enjoy. Whatever you order, the laidback vibe and cosy interiors make this Sydney Italian restaurant the perfect meeting place for local families and friends.
Brunch @ Downstairs
At The Urban List, we love welcoming a new month because it means four glorious weeks of Saturday brunches lie ahead of us. This month, we are loving brunch at Downstairs in Darlinghurst for their British inspired menu warm, hearty breakfasts and cosy ambience.
If you want the total English experience order the, fittingly named, ‘Full English’, which comes with a fried egg, bacon, pork sausages, portobello mushrooms, baked beans, toast and black pudding. If it’s something sweet you’re after then the traditional porridge is served with house-made jam and oat crumble and goes does a treat in this cooler weather! So if you’re after a delicious feed (and perhaps a place to pretend you’re casually having coffee with One Direction), then pop into Downstairs this Saturday!
