Guys, can you believe that January is almost over? Boy, did that go quickly. That’s why you better get cracking on those local exploration goals you set yourself as a new year’s resolution. Luckily, we’ve got your back with this handy-dandy guide of some pretty amazing things happening in Brisbane this week. We’ve got everything from a queer arts and culture festival to some killer Australia Day event ideas. All you have to do is gather up some mates to take along for the ride. Don’t worry, we’ll wait.

Melt 2017: A Celebration of Queer Arts and Culture

It’s time to hold that rainbow flag with pride at Melt 2017, presented by the Brisbane Powerhouse, a multi-day festival celebrating the diverse Brisbane queer community and the art they make. Exploring everything from comics to theatre to visual art in LGBTIQ+ Australia, Melt 2017 is the place to be this week—no matter your gender or sexuality.

When: Wednesday 25th January – Sunday 5th February

Great Australian Bites

This Australia Day, South Bank Parkland will play host to a variety of pop-up food stalls, taster plates, and picnic baskets as part of the Great Australian Bites program. The celebrations will feature the freshest Queensland produce you ever did see and live entertainment from home-grown stars Phil Jamieson, Dan Kelly and Ben Ely. Our perfect itinerary: gorging on some local Aussie goods before settling down on The Green to view the fireworks from 7:30pm.

When: Thursday 26th January – Saturday 28th January

555 Happy Hour at the Bavarian Bier Café

Who doesn’t love a good happy hour? We know we certainly do, and the Bavarian Bier Café is back at it again with some killer deals. Featuring $5 craft beers, $5 house spirits, $5 house wines and $5 happy hour cocktails, the 555 Happy Hour (get it now?) is available Monday to Sunday, making it the perfect spot for a cruisy Sunday sesh. Plus, you can throw in some chicken wings with your drinks for only $1, which is the most heavenly news we’ve heard all week. Sign us the heck up!

Dramatic Imaginations

Have you ever wondered what goes into creating the truly stunning sets and costumes of Queensland’s theatre productions? Then Dramatic Imaginations is an exhibition made for you. Designed to shine a spotlight on the ingenuity, skills and wonderful imaginations of Australian theatre-makers, the exhibition features sketches, costume designs, set models and production photographs from the QPAC Museum Collection. This one is definitely worth a visit, we promise you won’t regret it.

When: Until April 8th 2017, 10:00am – 7:30pm

Tuesday 24th January

Choir Jam at Retro Bar

What do you get when you try to teach a bunch of strangers how to sing one of Stevie Wonders’ biggest hits? Why Choir Jam, of course. Held in the aptly named Retro Bar, Choir Jam is the brain child of David and Jaime, who will attempt to teach a crowd of strangers how to sing a three part harmony in one night. There will be laughter, there will be delicious drinks, and you might even get some entertainment out of it at the end. What more could you ask for?

St Jerome’s Laneway Festival

You know it's officially summer when St Jerome’s Laneway Festival is back for another year of killer tunes, excellent eats and cutting-edge art from the up-and-comers amongst us. Featuring such show-stoppers as Tame Impala, Tash Sultana and Aurora, Laneway is sure to be as much of a cracker this year as it has been in the past. Plus, Brisbane’s leg of this multi-city festival just so happens to fall on Australia Day, so you’ve got no excuse to miss it.
