Get Festive With These 7 Christmas Events Going Down In Brisbane

No matter how old we get or how busy our lives become, each year we still get just as excited for the onslaught of festivities that merrily overtake our city. Whether it’s the iconic King George Square Christmas Tree, the sweet sound of carols permeating the air or watching the annual round of classic Christmas flicks, there’s nothing quite like Christmas in Brisbane.

So, to help you get your elves in a row, we’ve rounded up every festive event you need to check out in Brisbane City and Southbank this silly season.

Brisbane City Christmas Tree

We never tire from seeing a towering, 22 metre tall Christmas tree light up in all its glittering glory. Make sure to catch the live-stream of the annual event on 1 December with a special address from the Lord Mayor and hosted by Naomi Price. Just head to the Brisbane City Facebook page at 6.30pm to tune into the countdown. Plus, if you share in the moment via social media using the hashtag #merrybrismas you could win a $1,000 Christmas shopping spree in Brisbane City.  If you miss the festivities, don’t stress, it will be lighting up each night until 30 December. It’s open and free to attend for all your Christmas Instagram glory.

Festive Beats Presented Bt EatSouthBank 

Wind down into the Christmas season at South Bank Parklands for an evening of live performances at Festive Beats. Prepare to be serenaded by the smooth vocals of 30 different local artists as they perform original tunes and cheerful Christmas covers, with no one artist performing twice across the program. Pack a picnic or indulge in takeaway from one of the premium River Quay eateries. Or, if you're up for a foodie jaunt before you kick back on South Bank’s green for the afternoon, be sure to savour the flavours of Little Stanley Street’s stalwart restaurants, taking reservations throughout the Christmas program.

Christmas Cinema

Epic snacks, picnic rug, an outdoor cinema and Christmas movies. We’ll wait for you to name a better festive combo than that. This year, make sure to plan a visit to the Christmas Cinema presented by eatSouthBank at River Quay Green in South Bank Parklands and lap up their free cinematic experience. Here, you’ll be able to catch some of your favourite festive movie titles as the sun sets over the Brisbane skyline, bliss.

Gold Lotto City Hall Lights

This year's Gold Lotto Christmas Lights Spectacular is going to be turned on its head, merging a dazzling lights display with a touch of fantasy and magic. From glistening ice castles to Santa's bustling workshop, the Brisbane City Hall facade will be adorned in a decorative spectacle. With animation synced to a custom soundtrack, this projection show is a mesmerising way to celebrate the festive season. It’s open to everyone and free to attend, so gear up and get out the door.

Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols

Christmas just isn’t Christmas without hearing a few carols. And what better way to immerse yourself in the spirit than by watching them performed live by Brisbane’s best entertainers? Hosted at the iconic Riverstage, the night will be hosted by Charli Robinson with performances from Dami Im, Mirusia, Graeme Issako, Murphy’s Pigs and Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra. Tickets essential.

Christmas Tree Spectacular 

Supported by ABC Radio Brisbane this Christmas production will get the adrenaline pumping with singing, dancing and even circus acts. Guaranteed to ignite excitement and get you into the Christmas spirit, you won’t want to miss this one.

When: 18– 23 December, 5:30pm and 7:30pm nightly.

Endless Fun For Little Ones

If you’ve got a little one in tow you’ll want to make sure to make the journey to  Santa’s Stop Over to pay a visit to Mr and Mrs Claus at South Bank Parklands’ Flowstate. Set amongst a magnificent towering fig tree and light installation, your snaps are guaranteed to look magical. If they’re looking to get interactive, don’t miss out on Storytelling & Craft, where Santa’s elves will recite their favourite storybook tales. They’ll even get to create their very own wombat crowns. Simply adorable.
