First there was Eagle Street Pier—the CBD’s premier drinking and dining precinct where city slickers flocked for the ultimate combination of panoramic riverfront views and top-tier dining. And while the Pier has since closed, the precinct is entering a new era with a fresh name and a $2.5 billion refurb in the works.

A Brief History in Riverside Hospitality

With humble beginnings as a shipping wharf in the 1850s, Eagle Street Pier was reborn in 1989 as a chic new spot for date nights sure to bring in the brownie points or the no-brainer destination for after-work drinks.

The Pier has been home to some of the most highly regarded restaurants on the Brisbane hospitality scene, which rode a wave of popularity during the mid-2010s. Amongst them, Matt Moran’s ARIA, Il Centro (and that sand crab lasagna), Fatcow Steak & Lobster (since relocated to James Street), Naga Thai (relocated to River Quay), Sake and the oft-mourned Rico Bar & Dining and Jade Buddha.

So, What’s Next For Eagle Street Pier?

So glad you asked. Eagle Street Pier’s new iteration has been christened Waterfront Brisbane, and will be home to two new office towers, a riverfront retail precinct and improved public spaces—think a wider Riverwalk (making it much easier for cyclists and strollers to co-exist), improved access via the river jetty, increased mooring for river taxis, and a whole host of new dining and retail experiences.

There will also be a new CityCat terminal making a pitstop at the Waterfront even easier in the future.

Casual cafes and convenience retail will supplement the dining scene you know and love with more options for the everyday, turning Waterfront Brisbane into a destination for more than just special occasions.

What you might not have realised is that Naldham House is just one part of this enormous project, opening its elegant doors in 2024 with three stunning new late-night cocktail and dining destinations: Naldham House Brasserie & Terrace, Club Felix and The Fifty Six

When Will the Project Be Completed?

The timeline for Waterfront Brisbane is set for a 2028 completion, with the Riverwalk retail pavilions, North Tower and Market Hall all projected to make their grand debut.

The Riverwalk is already open (and 15m wider) so why not trot down and see what all the fuss is about?
