What started as a mobile pizza operation in a converted 1960 airstream caravan has morphed into the lofty warehouse slice haven that is Campground Kitchen.
Located in Braybrook in Melbourne's west, the mammoth converted warehouse is now a go-to destination for quality woodfired pizza.
The menu is split between both tomato-based and Bianca (white-based) options with knowledgeable combinations of salt and heat.
Take the Nduja with Napoli sauce, Fior di latte and fresh basil or the namesake Happy Camper with bechamel, roasted fig, gorgonzola, rocket and topped with prosciutto and a drizzling of balsamic and olive oil.
They've catered for all with a slew of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options and alongside the pizzas there's a selection of starters and salads, fresh arancini and of course a range of dessert options. The go-to is the cannoli which comes piped full of either ricotta, chocolate or limoncello cream.
Inside you'll find a welcoming light-filled space, designed in partnership with Petrina Turner, the entire venue has a rustic-style feel with sliding barn doors, concrete floors and exposed iron beams above. There's also an outdoor garden, ideal for sprawling in the sun and even tackling a game of Finska.
The all-new venue is somewhat bittersweet, the result of their former pizza truck 'Happy Camper' and half their warehouse (now Campground Kitchen) burning in down in an errant fire explosion.
After a community-initiated crowdfunding campaign that was spearheaded by fellow pizza-makers Pizza Wagon, and the loan of spare trailers from both Nicolosi Pizzeria and SQPR, the team were able to get back on their feet and then some, with the doors to Campground Kitchen just opening this past weekend.
'We pretty much had all our rival pizza trucks help us in this time while we not only rebuilt the warehouse, but also repaired the trucks that were salvageable from Happy Camper Pizza' says co-owner Sonia.
A slice with a side of feel redemption, Campground Kitchen is open now and located at 9 Errol Street in Braybrook, head over here for more.
