North Shore peeps, you're in for a real treat because Grownup Donuts have officially moved into the neighbourhood. The market faves—who also have a shop in Henderson—have set up a sweet new store in Wairau Valley and you're going to want to get there for your doughnut fix, stat.
Trust us when we say, these ain't your average doughnuts. Husband and wife team, Daniel and Annie saw a gap in the market for quality, handmade doughnuts and have worked tirelessly to create these since starting up the brand about two years ago.
You'll definitely taste the difference when tucking into one (or more) of these bad boys, which are made fresh every day without exception, from only the best ingredients (that means real butter and real eggs, people!). In fact, from the time they're baked to the time they make it into your hot little hands, these doughy delights are just a few hours young and we reckon there's something pretty special about that.
And because they're free of any added nasties like preservatives or fake colours and flavourings, it's recommended that you eat your doughnuts ASAP (that's a problem, how?).
The name Grownup Donuts not only applies to Daniel and Annie's ethos around ingredients, but their desire to create a doughnut that's more in line with adult tastes than run-of-the-mill varieties. Well they can consider that goal well and truly slayed, because we want one of absolutely everything here and reckon you will, too.
This might mean making a return trip or two however, given that the menu changes on the daily and is comprised of around 45 rotating filled and glazed flavours (including several vegan options), all equally delicious.
Banoffee fans will fall head over heels for the roasted banana with caramel cream (made with real banana of course), a heavenly combination that has us wondering why on earth we haven't encountered a doughnut of this kind before. In fact, if you're only going to try one thing here, do yourself a favour and please, pretty please—make it this.
For those who like a little kick to their treat, there's a Belgian chocolate version spiked with Baileys, while traditionalists might prefer getting stuck into the vanilla bean cream custard, or homemade jam with whipped cream. Oh and don't forget the passionfruit curd with toasted meringue, mocha cream, and raspberry cheesecake (plus whatever other flavours Annie may have decided to cook up for the day).
Wash all that sugar-coated goodness down with a cup of coffee from micro-roastery Bow & Tie, and you have the makings of a damn good treat sesh.
So head along to this sweet little spot in the heart of Wairau Valley for some of the best doughnuts you've ever tasted. You can thank us later...
