Christmas Day should be about relaxing and spending time with your loved ones, right? Though sometimes finding an Auckland restaurant that's open on Christmas Day is like finding a needle in a haystack.

We've done the hard yards and found out who's open to play host this year so you can sit back, relax and make merry while someone else does all the work.

Here are all the great restaurants that are open on Christmas Day 2022.

FISH, Hilton Auckland

Get set for a serious festive feast at FISH, who are hosting both lunch AND dinner this Christmas. Perched at the end of Princes Wharf, this is certainly a beautiful spot to spend the big day, and the food is just as gorgeous. There'll be crayfish arancini and citrus-cured Mt Cook salmon to start—a Hawke's Bay natural lamb rack and confit turkey legs for mains—and a yoghurt marshmallow bombe, amongst other treats, to end your meal on a suitably sugary high. And let's not forget that glass of Bollinger bubbles... Again, a special Christmas Eve dinner is also available.

Lunch and dinner: $245 per person. Book here.

Esther, QT Auckland

Switch up the festivities this year with a Mediterranean-inspired spread at celeb chef Sean Connolly's beloved restaurant, Esther. Located inside the stylish QT Hotel, you'll be treated to your choice of lunch or dinner featuring fan faves like puff bread, Te Matuku oysters and saffron-laced linguine, alongside seasonal specials such as Kataifi wild-caught prawns and Harmony Farms roast porchetta. Ooh, and a gorgeous raspberry trifle for afters.

Lunch and dinner: $185 per person. Book here.

Cooke's Restaurant, Fable Auckland

A chic Christmas menu awaits those who choose to spend December 25 at Cooke's Restaurant, which you'll find hidden inside the lush Fable Auckland hotel. Whether it's an exquisite champagne breakfast or a seven-course degustation for lunch or dinner, a meal here will take your Christmas Day celebrations to tasty new heights. Enjoy the restaurant's stylish heritage setting whilst feasting on drool-worthy dishes including yellowfin tuna tartar with nori crackers, lemon and avocado—beef tenderloin with potato pave, brown hollandaise, baby onion and truffle jus—and strawberry milk ice cream with cabernet sauvignon caramel to finish.

Champagne breakfast: $90 per person. | Lunch and dinner: $220 per person. Book here.

Mudbrick, Waiheke

It's two times the festivities over at Waiheke favourite, Mudbrick, who are serving up a Christmas Day lunch at their fancy flagship, Mudbrick Restaurant (where you'll enjoy a seven-course degustation), as well as at the more relaxed Archive Bistro (expect a set menu of shared nibbles followed by your choice of entrée, main, and dessert). And bonus, both come with insane ocean views.

Lunch: $195 per person (Mudbrick Restaurant)/ $50 per child, $175 per person (Archive Bistro)/ $50 per child. Book here.

La Marée, Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour Hotel

Christmas is the time to indulge, is it not? And La Marée, the signature restaurant over at Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour Hotel, is just the place to do it. Their exquisite Joyeux Noël Grand Buffet Lunch boasts a New Zealand charcuterie and French cheese platter, fresh market seafood, a live station carvery and gorgeous sweet treats including mulled wine and chocolate Christmas trees, all served a literal stone's throw from the Auckland Viaduct. A Christmas Eve dinner will also be taking place here.

Lunch: $235 per person/ $95 per child (ages 4-12). Book here.

Onemata, The Park Hyatt Auckland

If paua arancini, Christmas ham doughnuts and whiskey-cured salmon, followed by treats from award-winning pastry chef, Callum Liddicoat—washed down with champagne sounds like your cup of Christmas tea, then best book yourself in for Christmas Day dinner at Onemata. One of several top-notch eateries located inside the stunning Park Hyatt Auckland hotel, these guys are serving up a feast fit for a Christmas king (or queen), in an unrivalled waterfront setting. Plus, they're putting on a special dinner for Christmas Eve, too.

Dinner only: $210 per person/ $50 per child (ages 3-4)/ $105 per child (ages 5-12). Book here.

The Sugar Club, SkyCity

For a festive feast that's quite literally next-level, head up Auckland's tallest building to The Sugar Club. Yes, if the Sky Tower were a Christmas tree then this world-class restaurant would surely be the shining star on top. Located 53 floors above ground, not only will you enjoy one of the best views in the city—but you'll also be treated to the finest in creative dining, should you choose to eat here on Christmas Day. And seeing as it's the one day of the year when over-indulgence is not only acceptable but actively encouraged, you'd best make sure you snap up one of their coveted cocktails while you're there.

Lunch and dinner: $230 per person (excluding cocktails)/ $79 per child. Book here.

Masu, SkyCity

For those wanting to steer clear of tradition, there's not a single slice of ham in sight at the award-winning Masu—which is instead offering diners an exotic Kurisumasu Tokusen menu for both lunch and dinner. Expect plenty of scrumptious Japanese-inspired fare, including black beer sourdough with wagyu butter—oysters, kingfish sashimi and toro tuna belly—and a green tea and strawberry cheesecake. Merīkurisumasu!

Lunch and dinner: $165 per person. Book here.

BODA, Mövenpick Hotel Auckland

We can think of worse ways to spend Christmas Day than with a meal at the Mövenpick Hotel Auckland–hbu? Their gorgeous top-floor restaurant, BODA, is putting on one hell of a buffet for the occasion and as to be expected, there's no shortage of sweet treats, including a Movenpick ice cream trolley (read that again. An ice cream TROLLEY). Apparently, however, man cannot live on sugar alone—so they've also got a hot carvery station, salads, and a seafood bar to sort you out, plus bubbles on arrival.

Lunch and dinner: $159 per person/ $70 per child (ages 5-12. Children under 5 years eat free). Book here.

Gusto at the Grand, SkyCity

Cue the Santa belly—one of the city's best Italian joints is putting on a hearty Med-inspired feast, especially for Christmas Day. In the true famiglia way, Gusto at the Grand will be cooking up a generous lunch and dinner menu featuring burrata with tomato zuppetta, mini panettone puddings, pork tortellini in parmesan cream, chocolate and orange tiramisu, and roast beef with salsa verde... we can feel our pants stretching already, hbu?

Lunch and dinner: $160 per person / $65 per child. Book here.

Huami, SkyCity

Another spot veering away from tradition this year is Huami. Available for Christmas Day dinner, their authentic Chinese Nectar menu is (no disrespect) everything a typical Chrissy spread is not—aromatic, a li'l spicy, and filled with exotic flavours. Think deep-fried soft-shell crab, fruit wood-roasted Peking duck, crispy Tabasco prawns, wok-fried beef, steamed snapper fillets, and a mango pudding with roast pineapple and coconut kaffir lime ice cream for dessert. Yummm.

Dinner: $109 per person. Book here.

Orbit, SkyCity

One thing we know about Christmas Day dining at Orbit—spirits will be high. How could they not be, when the food and drink is flowing, and the views are otherworldly (like The Sugar Club, this one sits far above the city, up the Sky Tower). These guys are putting on a special Kiwi-inspired Christmas menu showcasing the best local and seasonal produce for both lunch and dinner (think Riverland beef fillet with truffle potato mash, prawn wontons, wilted spinach and rosemary jus and a layered dark chocolate cake with raspberry jelly and sorbet, washed down with a glass of fizz), all enjoyed while sitting in the country's only rotating restaurant (yes people, the dining room actually moves).

Lunch and dinner: $175 per person. Book here.
