Meet Bar Love, The Kitsch New Dive Bar From A Hospo Dream Duo

By – who is always dreaming of her next meal and reckons a good martini solves most problems

If you've pulled up to Mechanics Institute for a drink before, chances are you've met beloved Perth bartenders Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh. The formidable pair and mates have made a name for themselves in the cocktail world (with plenty of shiny awards to show for it too), but we reckon it's the good-time bants and friendly service that keep us coming back round after round. Now, they're going out on their own.

Bar Love sets the mood straight up. Retro hand-painted signage promising “Cold Drinks, Warm Service and Hot Bartenders” gives way to 70s maximalist interiors with plenty of sass. From the brash hot pink walls, to mirror ball panther statues, bric-a-brac galore and velvet love seats—there's clearly no such thing as too much or too loud here.

The real fun is waiting behind the bar, though. Signature cocktails like peaches and cream negronis and a playful spin on the espresso martini and viral mont blanc coffee (you know the one with thick cream on top?) will be mixed up alongside seasonal concoctions and quality classics like Pip's dirty... scratch that, filthy martini.

You'll also find four taps pouring batched cocktails from Idle Hands Drinks Co and brews from the guys at Shelter in Busselton and other guest breweries. As for wine? They'll be keeping the list short and sweet, with a focus on good value.

They've teamed up with Chef Dwight Alexander from neighbouring restaurant Peasants Paradice on the food. Expect classic bar snacks like loaded fries, focaccia and dips and seasonal sandos backed by Alexander's signature Modern African spice blends.

Bar Love will open at 195 Brisbane St in Northbridge later this month.
