Forget Coffee, Perth’s Best Matcha Spots Might Just Be Worth Trading Your Flat White For

If you’ve been eyeing off matcha on your feed and wondering where to actually get the good stuff in Perth, you’re not alone. It’s expanded through the Perth cafe scene, and even though it’s one of those drinks that looks simple, the smooth, earthy flavour comes from quality, and that’s harder to track down than you’d think!

Luckily, Perth has a growing handful of spots that really get the Matcha obsession. Some stick to the traditional whisk-and-bowl method, others add fun twists like strawberry matcha, pistachio cream or unexpected flavour combos you’ll love. Either way, these are places worth seeking out when you want your matcha fix to feel like a step up from your regular latte.

Here’s where you can find the best matcha in Perth right now.

What is matcha?

Matcha is a fine powder made from whole tea leaves, usually whisked into water or milk to bring out the flavour. You can have matcha iced or hot, just like a latte. Taste-wise, it’s smooth and earthy with a subtle sweetness, kind of like a creamy, grassy nuttiness that’s oddly addictive once you’re into it.

It’s been around for centuries in Japan, but lately Matcha has gone viral as the wellness drink of the moment. Maybe it’s the wild new flavours (banana cream matcha, anyone?), maybe it’s the calm, slow-release caffeine, or maybe it’s just that iconic green colour that looks ridiculously good on a hot girl walk. Whatever the reason Perth’s cafés are finally serving up matcha in style.

Perth’s Best Classic Matchas:

20Twenty

3/70 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge

Search TikTok, and you’ll see 20Twenty everywhere, and they really do live up to the hype. Their classic iced matcha is rich and full-bodied without being overly bitter. They’re also upfront about not pre-sweetening their blends, which means you taste the tea itself, slightly earthy, slightly vegetal, and very smooth. Their pistachio matcha latte is their signature drink—it’s not overpoweringly sweet, just that slight nutty flavour that cuts through the bitterness. But honestly, the OG classic is my pick!

Chu Bakery

498 William Street, Highgate

Overlooking the lush Hyde Park, Chu is known for pastries that spark queues down the street. But, they also serve a matcha that is beautifully balanced.  This is up there with the best places to get a warm, cozy Matcha in Perth—creamy, lightly earthy, and begging to be paired with one of their famous almond croissants. The flavour isn’t overpowering or bitter but works well with buttery, flaky pastries.

March Coffee Studio

140 William Street, Perth

Tucked away in the CBD, March Coffee Studio is a minimalist café designed for smooth sipping and calm moments in the city. It’s the kind of sleek little spot where you come for clarity, in both headspace and flavour. Their "March-a" is clean, balanced, and silky, with a gentle creaminess that softens the earthy notes without throwing them off. It’s a fuss-free cup that will give you that much needed slow-release caffeine in the middle of your workday grind!

Grindhouse

2 Bradford Street, Mount Lawley

As someone who’s spent far too many mornings cramming here, I can vouch: Grindhouse matcha has saved me more than once. The taste is creamy with a gentle nuttiness, softer than the grassy ceremonial blends, but still with enough earthy depth to feel legit. Plus, the café itself is cozy enough to camp out with your notes, making it a student go-to for both comfort and caffeine.

Luna n Soul

80 Ocean Drive, Quinns Rocks

Image credit: Luna N Soul | Instagram

North of the river, Luna N Soul is a sweet little secret on the Quinns Beach trail. Their matcha is definitely sweetened, but it’s creamy, mellow, and easy-drinking. Think of it as an entry-level matcha that anyone can enjoy, less ceremonial and more of a “grab-and-go” cup for one of the most stunning, best kept coastal walks north of Perth.

Matcha Garden

4/660 Albany Highway, Victoria Park

Image credit: Matcha Garden | Instagram

If you’re after the closest thing to a traditional tea ceremony in Perth, Matcha Garden is it. Here, you get the full whisk-it-yourself experience with bamboo whisk, matcha bowl, and low Japanese seating. Sitting through a ceremonial matcha experience overlooking Mount Fuji, was a life highlight from my recent travels— and I can honestly say this is really similar to the real deal. The matcha itself is bold and slightly bitter in the best possible way. It’s less about sweetness and being trendy, and more about that little spiritual reset in a cup.

Teassential

State Buildings, Corner of St Georges Terrace & Cathedral Avenue, Perth

Set inside the heritage State Buildings, Teassential is already worth a visit for the setting alone. But the matcha here? It’s vibrant, a little grassy, and layered. It starts off earthy, then it opens into a subtle creaminess that lingers. Their ceremonial-grade blends are the real deal, whisked to a frothy finish that feels grounding. Depending on what kind of matcha you prefer, they also stock genmaicha and houjicha, so you can find your favourite style of Japanese tea in one hit.

What’s the difference between premium and ceremonial grade matcha?

So, you’ve been eyeing off that perfect green latte and wondering why some matcha tastes silky and sweet, while others hit you with that bitter grassy green tea flavour. The secret? It’s all about the grade.

Ceremonial grade is made from the youngest tea leaves. It’s whisked up until smooth, and foamy on top. and meant to be sipped straight with hot water. It’s earthy, similar to a green tea— like the straight espresso of the Matcha world! Premium, on the other hand, is your go-to for lattes, smoothies, and recipes. Because it’s made from slightly older leaves, the flavour is a bit stronger and sometimes more bitter, but it pairs well with sweeter inclusions.

If you’re chasing an authentic matcha experience, you’ll want a ceremonial matcha. If you just want your morning green latte to hit the spot, premium has your back.

Hemingway Cafe

152/158 St Georges Terrace, Perth

Hemingway’s matcha is straight from Japan and it shows. The colour is a deep emerald green, and the flavour hits sharp and strong—grassy and unapologetically intense but with a hint of creaminess. If you’ve been on the sweeter matcha lattes but want to graduate to something more authentic, this is the place. It’s matcha for purists, and it’ll recalibrate your taste buds.

Magic Apple Life

149 Marine Parade, Cottesloe

It’s no surprise that this coastal wellness café would lean into earthy grounded flavours, and their matcha is no exception. The taste has less sweetness than most spots, perfect if you’re after something that feels healthy, balancing, and energising rather than indulgent. When you pair it with one of their wellness bowls,  a post-beach walk or yoga session, you’ll feel instantly reset.

Perth's Best Strawberry Matchas:

Cookie Loaded

37/148 Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn

Image credit: Cookie Loaded | Instagram

Cookie Loaded is a dessert bar in Mount Hawthorn that brought matcha into the cookie game. Their strawberry matcha leans into that Nesquik-style strawberry milk, layered with compote at the bottom and topped with one of their signature chewy cookies. It’s indulgent, fun, and even comes in a clear can, so you can’t sip without snapping a pic. The combo is $15.50, but when your regular cookie hovers on $8, the matcha cookie combo is a no-brainer.

LuluLala

1/100 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge

This cute little café just outside the city is beloved for their Strawberry Cream Matcha Latte. The matcha here is smooth, lifted by the fruity sweetness of strawberries and topped with a creamy foam that makes each sip fresh. It’s a girly and fun take on the regular bev, but if you’re more of a classic type, their straight matcha latte is still equally loved.

CafeEighty2

953 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park

Image credit: Cafe Eighty2 | Instagram

Cafe Eighty2 is a Korean-fusion eatery that gets what you mean when you’re craving a real matcha. Their signature strawberry matcha is served over crushed ice with fresh strawberry chunks, which keeps it cool, light, and refreshing rather than sickly sweet. The flavour leans fresh and fruity, with the matcha balancing things out so it never feels synthetic.

Perth’s Best Speciality Matcha:

Berry Bae

14a/663 Newcastle Street, Leederville

Image credit: Berry Bae | Instagram

Berry Bae is the colourful Leederville hangout best known for their loaded acai bowls and playful drinks. Recently, they’ve pivoted into matcha in a big way with their Kinder Bueno Matcha that fuses the earthy, sweet green tea with the creamy, nutty chocolate flavour everyone’s obsessed with. Berry Bae is on the ball with the matcha trends. They’ve already jumped on the Dubai-style chocolate filling craze for their bowls, so it’s no surprise their drinks feel just as creative and indulgent. And honestly, pairing their matcha with one of their acai bowls is a dream combo—two of my absolute favourite things in one go.

Palette

1 Freeman Loop, North Fremantle

Palette is hands-down one of the most experimental matcha spots in Perth. Their rotating monthly specials are as stunning as they are tasty. This month, it was pistachio cream, but in the past they’ve whipped up sticky date pudding, blueberry cheesecake, banana bread, cherry vanilla, and mango matcha. I’m hanging out with you to find out what next month’s special might be! Each one is beautifully presented and surprisingly well balanced, with the matcha’s grassiness cutting through the sweetness. Their drinks are basically art in a cup, and the Instagram story potential from this cafe is off the charts.

Two Slices

Shop 2/23/27 Scarborough Beach Road, Scarborough

Image credit: Two Slices | Instagram

Two Slices jumped on the pistachio matcha wave a year ago, and it still holds it ground. The pistachio cream iced matcha comes out like soft serve on top, and adds a subtle nuttiness that rounds out the flavour of the tea, while the texture is creamy, icy and refreshing. This matcha isn’t super full bodied, but the signature cream makes it worth a try. You should absolutely pair it with one of their Italian-style sandwiches—the savoury-sweet combo (especially with prosciutto!)  is next-level.

The Tribute Coffee and Kitchen

8/19 Tribute Street West, Shelley

Image credit: The Tribute Coffee and Kitchen | Instagram

After a brief break during the matcha shortage, The Tribute is back with a bang. Their ceremonial-grade blends (from Mind Ya Matcha) are subtly sweet, earthy, and finished with a savoury note. For something different, try their Earl Grey Iced Matcha. It’s topped with an Earl Grey cold foam that adds a fragrant, floral lift. Unique, refreshing, and a super thoughtful take.

Kith Eatery

51 Aberdare Road, Nedlands

Image credit: Kith Eatery | Instagram

If there’s a café that’s turned matcha into an art form, it’s Kith Eatery. Their creations are endlessly photogenic and genuinely delicious, from the tropical iced matcha with a nutty undertone to the strawberry Mont Blanc piled high with cream. The ube iced matcha is a one of a kind: Ube is derived from purple yam, and it adds a vanilla-nutty sweetness that adds a bit of edge to matcha’s earthiness.

Side Piece Deli

93 Shenton Road, Swanbourne

Image credit: Side Piece | Instagram

Side Piece just opened up next door to Daisies on the 25th of August, and this coastal spot is giving major cooler-sidekick energy. The drinks are where it gets fun: the Iced Banana Caramel Matcha ($8.50) mixes the herbal taste of matcha with housemade banana-caramel syrup for a sweet/savoury combo. Fun, flirty, and a little bit addictive— very on brand for this “sidepiece.” The Hot Strawberry Matcha ($8) brings a fruity take to their classic iced strawberry matcha. Their slogan is “what happens at the deli, stays at the deli,” but honestly, I just can’t keep this one a secret from you.
