What The Heck Is SpeedFit?

What the heck is SpeedFit and is it really possible to get fit in 20 minutes a week? That's the question on everyone's lips in Perth these days.

Well, prepare to be amazed (and to cancel your gym memberships) because this is one workout you're going to want to try.

SpeedFit is a revolutionary workout which combines Electronic Muscle Stimulation, or EMS, with personal training, to help you sculpt the body of your dreams.

How Does It Work?

In basic terms, electric impulses make your muscles contract and relax, mimicking the action they go through when doing resistance exercises. In one 20-minute workout, eight muscle groups will be targeted with over 150 contractions per group. Put it this way, one workout can be equivalent to a three-hour weights session at the gym—so if you were hoping for an easy workout, you're going to want to look somewhere else!

What Does It Involve?

Upon arriving at your session you'll be given an isotonic drink which helps to keep you hydrated during and after your workout. Then you'll need to go and get changed into your SpeedFit gear (you can leave your activewear at home for this one) before you get suited up. For first timers, this phase might be a little daunting, but don't let the Lara Croft-style vest and straps fool you, SpeedFit is totally safe! Oh and you will get a little wet as the suits are hosed down beforehand to help conduct the electric current, but don't worry, there are showers on site as well as hair dryers, straighteners and pretty much everything you could ever need to freshen up. And before you leave they'll mix you up a protein shake to help your muscles on their way to recovery.

What Does It Feel Like?

For the duration of the workout, your muscles will contract for six seconds, followed by a four-second resting phase. You’ll feel a fast vibration and your muscles will clench. While your muscles are in contraction your dedicated personal trainer will take you through a series of poses that you need to hold to make the workout more effective. The poses don't involve anything too advanced, mainly squatting postures and lunges, but they can get a little tricky once your trainer turns up the intensity of the contraction. You're in complete control the whole time, so if something is a little too intense just shout out to your trainer and they'll turn things down a little.

And What About The After Effects?

Immediately after your workout your muscles will feel slightly fatigued, but in the next few days, the fun really starts. And by fun, I mean DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness for those not in the know). Depending on your body and how hard you worked out you could feel sore for just a few days, but if you're like me your muscles will ache for an entire week. It's not a bad ache, though, just the kind that reminds you you've done a good workout.

The Verdict

SpeedFit is the perfect workout for people on the go. The entire process, from getting changed, drinking the various drinks and doing the workout, takes about 40 minutes all up—so it's an easy workout to fit in on your lunch break or around your working schedule. You'll feel the effects immediately after your first workout, and coupled with a healthy diet, you'll notice your body will be more toned in just a few short weeks. So get excited because it really is possible to get fit in 20 minutes a week!
