Tame Your Mane With Sydney’s Best Hairdressers

Whether you want to add layers or lose your locks, Sydney has a crop of amazing hair salons to check out. Here's the long and the short of Sydney's best hairdressers.

People Hairdressing | Potts Point

At an age when most of us were counting down the last 12 months of using a fake ID, Hamish Glianos was starting his career as a barber's apprentice. Since then, he has refined his skills through an international career and developed an education system that has made People Hairdressing's team synonymous with intelligent, individual and contemporary hairdressing while maintaining a down to earth environment treating every client as 'real people'. It's no wonder these guys are established as one of Sydney's best hairdressers.

Esstudio Galleria | Chippendale

If you like puppies and pretty amazing hair experiences, then you've come to the right place. As well as an unconventional security guard – Oxy the canine who mans the door, the real life humans who run Esstudio are some of Sydney's top dogs. Flanked by glamorous beauty director Jax (she does manis, makeovers and more), hair stylist Aleks Abadia offers his services in a relaxed casual atmosphere. There's antique chandeliers, massage chairs and vino to accompany your visit. According to Aleks, who has Miranda Kerr, Kate Bosworth and Rusty Crowe's digits saved on his phone, the aim is to treat all his clients with "energy and enthusiasm".

Marli Rose Hairdressing | Alexandria

Her name might sound like it belongs to a Disney diva or a Hollywood heroine, but Jana Pana's real star power is hair. Her new salon in Alexandria promises to deliver blockbuster bobs, beautiful blow dries and eye-catching colour. With over 15 years of industry experience, Jana Panoutsopoulos has developed her own technique and style of hairdressing, and now offers the skills she learnt on jobs like GHD styling for Manning Cartell at Australian Fashion Week in a relaxed, friendly environment. Jana Pana: Cool name- Cooler mane.

Lunio' Hair | Surry Hills

The (Surry) Hills may be alive with the sound of music (and margherita drinkers and Messina line queuers), but nestled in its heart is this warm and welcoming salon. Fans "yelp" about its super staff, reasonable price tags, fab foils and man-appropriate mane offerings and we agree. From colour and cuts without any pretension, it is indeed one of our favourite things.

This Revo-lutionary salon in the core of the city specialises in state-of-the-art hair spa technology. The institute, which is a flagship of L'Oreal Paris (They are L'Oreal Professionnel's preferred colour specialist salon), is fronted by a team of gold-medal grabbing, super-skilled stylists who all have different tastes in shoes but agree that their responsibility to give you timeless, gorgeous beautiful hair is a big one. It's definitely an upgrade from the $20 trims of your teens, but why not? After all – You're worth it!

The One With The Brightest Summer, DD&Co

DD&CO | Sans Souci

With a homepage filled with Instagram-able images of gold, glitter and girls wearing gorgeous daisy chain hair garlands, this seaside hair salon is definitely worth hashtagging (rather convenient because they do have their own account). Owner Jessica DiDonato, who lent her initials to naming the salon lives by the sword – well, the scissors – and the motto that "life is too short to have bad hair." Here, here!

Prema | Bondi Junction

The Devil may wear Prada, but if she lived in Bondi Junction, we bet Ms Wintour would leave her fringed-bob in the capable hands of this amazing salon. Made up of over 50 maestros claiming a "worldwide knowledge of hair, makeup, education and fashion" and a creative commitment to their craft, the Prema team back it up by offering their styling and colouring services to clients like Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Miss Vogue. We think even Anna herself would be impressed with the passion and professionalism of owner Francesco Ruggerino and his Prema crew.

Edwards & Co. | Surry Hills

Twilight may have tried to convince teenage girls otherwise, but this salon proves there can only be one winner – and Team Edward takes the prize. Directed by leading colourist Jaye Edwards, the warehouse studio of Edwards & Co may come across as all minimal and discreet, but don't be fooled. Just like everyone's favourite vampire, the spacious interior has it's secrets, housing an eclectic mix of freelancing hair and beauty experts who offer services and skills as diverse as any good supernatural saga.

Raw Hair | Surry Hills

The raw movement may be having a moment (although we're yet to be convinced by an uncooked sugar-free snickers recipe), but for Anthony Nader, the fad is so 1997. That was the year he established RAW Anthony Nader – a Sydney salon focussed on providing clients with an "exceptional hair and beauty experience". Cate Blanchett, Gisele Bündchen, Hugh Jackman, Lily Cole, Miranda Kerr and Nicole Richie have all received the royal Raw treatment. In fact, Anthony is such a big deal, he has also directed shows in London, Milan, Paris, New York and Sydney, as well as released his own line of hair products (The RAW Essentials).

Desmond & Molly Jones | Surry Hills

Short on coin for the latest glossy and not really feeling the well-thumbed 1998 issue of Readers Digest at your local barber? We suggest you book an appointment at Desmond & Molly Jones. As well as offering more mags than your local newsagency, this sweet salon, created by Leonard Newtown (noted guilty pleasures include dancing to early Whitney) and Jasmin Letherbridge, serves couture tea and gelato. However, as woman cannot live by ice cream alone, rather conveniently, the place offers a heap of tressing services including: tints, highlights and balayage.

Valonz | Paddington

Renya Xydis would be an excellent scrabble buddy. Not only has she spent a lifetime utilising the almost-impossible-to-work-with letter X, she also went on to name her salon with the nearly as difficult V (for Valonz). Supported by partner Jim and a team of talented cutting specialists and colour technicians, Xydis' Valonz has developed into one of Sydney's best hair salons, with services impressing a discreet yet high profile clientele, magazine editors and folks who simply love their locks.
