10 Of The Best Book Clubs In Brisbane To Join In 2025

By

When you think of a book club, you might picture a small group gathering at someone's home, sipping tea and chatting about a good book. While that classic setup is still alive and well, book clubs have evolved in recent years. In 2025, they’ve become a vibrant social scene, popping up all over the city. Chances are, you've passed one during a Sunday stroll or spotted one while catching up with friends after work.

Whether you're looking to make new friends or, let's be honest, boost your attention span (we've all been there) by reading more books, book clubs are the perfect way to do it. This month, our Urban List writer put on her detective hat, trawled the internet (big shoutout to community groups), chatted with locals across the city, and rounded up some of Brisbane/Meanjin's best book clubs to check out this year. Here’s what locals had to say…

Brisbane Book Club

Brisbane Book Club is one of the city's largest, with over 4,000 members in its closed Facebook group. But don’t let the numbers intimidate you, as they host regular 'Books in the Park' events across Brisbane, where members gather in smaller groups each month to discuss the latest read.

Unlike classic book clubs, Brisbane Book Club offers a variety of monthly books for members to read, spanning genres like fantasy, romance, thriller and poetry. Members can choose to read one, some, or none—there's absolutely no pressure. Best of all, joining is completely free, there are no age restrictions, and kids are welcome (yes, parents and caregivers, we're talking to you).

Hot Girl Walk Book Club

The Hot Girl Walk trend has officially left the group chat and taken over Brisbane. What started in mid-2024 as a small group of gals eager to get outdoors, make new friends, and chat about books over coffee has grown into a thriving community of women from all across Brisbane.

Each month, members suggest books, and the club votes on one to read, covering genres from romance to thrillers, mysteries, and more. If you're looking to up your step count, meet some friendly, like-minded women, and bond over books, Brisbane's Hot Girl Walk Book Club is calling your name.

North Brisbane Book Club is a strictly fiction, adult-only book club that covers genres like fantasy, romance, young adult, crime and sci-fi. Plus, for those of you who enjoy a bit more spice (dark romance, anyone?), they also offer a bonus dark romance pick every month.

Coorparoo Book Club

If a mix of contemporary books with a few timeless classics sounds like your jam, the Coorparoo Book Club has you covered. This fun, laid-back club is all about reading, socialising, and connecting with like-minded people in a relaxed environment.

Each month, the club meets at various venues around Coorparoo, where the food is delicious, the drinks are well-priced, and the ambience is perfect for chitchatting about the book of the month. Members also suggest future reads, and if buying books isn't your thing (we're big fans of being sustainable), the club makes an effort to choose titles available for borrowing from local Brisbane City Council libraries.

Each year, the Birds Of A Feather book club devours 11 wildly different page-turners, ranging from delicious whodunnits to rom-coms, historical sagas, and everything in between. What truly sets the club apart, though, is that the authors themselves join the monthly meetups, making it feel like a writers’ festival right in the comfort of your own home. Past guests have included Trent Dalton, Pip Williams, Larissa Behrendt, Kate Morton, Sally Hepworth, and many more. Imagine unwinding after a busy day, tuning in, wearing your fav trackie dacks and sipping a glass of wine. Yes, please.

Tough Guy Book Club might be just what you’re looking for. This international book club boasts 122 chapters around the world, with 17 right here in Queensland. Best of all, all the chapters worldwide read the same book each month, so whether you're on holiday or travelling for work, you can join any meetup across the globe and dive into the conversation.

This club is making waves throughout Brisbane, bringing back lively pub conversations by encouraging men to read and talk more and make new friends. Why talk about the weather when you could talk about revenge (the fictional kind, of course)? If you’re a fiction reader eager to chat about books in an unpretentious and friendly environment, we highly recommend joining.

Avid Reader Book Clubs, hosted by the much-loved indie bookshop Avid Reader in West End, are a crowd favourite. With a dozen clubs to choose from—covering everything from contemporary Australian fiction and queer literature to books celebrating female perspectives and romance, you’re bound to find one that piques your interest.

Tickets are around $5 and limited to about 50, so make sure you snap one up fast.

Instead of everyone reading the same book, members are free to read what they’re into. Then, at each meetup, held at their vibrant and welcoming North Brisbane bookstore, members are encouraged to draw a question at random and chat about their most recent read. Pretty cool, right?

The Details
