5 Lire cafe on Errol Street, North Melbourne, prides itself on offering a taste of the passion and simplicity of great Italian fare. By the Kid Boston crew, Jungle Boy has an intimate vibe and low key decor that matches the name perfectly (think ferns, lots of ferns). Touted as one of Melbourne’s best live music venues, this no-nonsense Carlton pub is serious about the local music scene. Grab an ice-cold beer, and treat yourself to some pub grub. The Carlton Wine Room specialises in wines sourced from around the world, which are then matched with local fine dining creations. The Carlton restaurant runs several tasting menus and foodie events throughout the year, making it one of the best restaurants in Melbourne for budding sommeliers to visit.

Milly Sleeping in Carlton is one of the best spots for independent fashion in Melbourne. Its small Elgin Street premises plays host to work by local designers including Romance Was Born, ffiXXed and Kuwaii, making it great for picking up limited edition garments and accessories. If you're in need of a private shopping spree, the premises is open on Mondays and Tuesdays by appointment in addition to its standard opening hours.

Hidden behind Jimmy Watson's main restaurant is the bar's smaller premises, The Wolf's Lair. Comprised of a small ground-level snug and an upper-level garden, this Carlton rooftop bar also does a wonderful abbreviated food menu (the smoked salmon pizza is a must) and is a great spot for a cosy date or open-air group gathering. One of Melbourne's best rooftop bars!

Heartattack and Vine do a little of everything—coffee, breakfast, bar snacks, wine, cocktails—and, surprisingly, do it all very well! One of the best bars in Carlton for an afternoon soiree that involves wine and sharing plates, the petite venue has outdoor seating as well as limited indoor space. Grab a seat at the Heartattack and Vine bar if you can!

If you’ve never heard of floatation therapy, we wouldn’t blame you! Gravity Floatation Centre in Northcote is one of Melbourne’s best-kept wellness secrets. Middle Park Hotel is the type of Melbourne gastropub where you can do it all - eat, drink, stay and play. The menu, created by chef Sangsub Ha, is full of classic pub favourite including pies, scotch eggs, lamb, and some of the best steak in Melbourne. Kao Thai specialises in perfectly balanced authentic Thai cuisine. The Brunswick Thai restaurant is tucked into a small space on Sydney Road, and the staff are friendly and helpful, especially if you're not an expert in Thai cooking flavours and techniques! Kao Thai serves lunch, dinner and take away, and you can even BYO—what's not to love?!

Neighbourhood Wine—one of our favourite wine bars and restaurants in Fitzroy North—combines great local wines and a fantastic seasonal menu in one top-notch venue that'll make you feel a little like you're in an old-school gangster flick. They also offer private dining, set weekend long lunches (a smashing idea if you're stuck for a group foodie hangout), and bottomless house wine deals. 'Hic! 

Offering a wide range of exquisite sorbets and ice-creams, Helados Jauja in Carlton caters to lovers of traditional gelato in Melbourne. The flavours are delicious, natural (so free from added colourings and flavourings—win!) and often unexpected. Ever tried mojito gelato? What about goats' cheese and raspberry?! At Helados Jauja, you're sure to discover something new. 

For creative gelato flavours hand-made by some of the best gelato experts in Melbourne, Miinot Gelato in Pascoe Vale South is hard to beat. The family-run gelateria specialises in delicious natural desserts made from the highest quality raw ingredients, resulting in rich flavours and silky-smooth textures.

Located at Katherine Place in the heart of Melbourne, Five & Dime is your one-stop-shop for beautiful boiled and baked bagels. What’s more, you can sit down, order a Promised Land coffee and pick and choose your lunchtime treat. Bagels to choose from include Plain, Onion, Rye, Poppy, Everything, Cinnamon & Raisin, Sesame, Salt and Dill. Fillings are pretty epic too, with everything from strawberry to bacon maple cream cheese! No one will blame you if you take away seconds!

Hard Pressed Coffee in East Melbourne specialises in traditional French press coffee and sandwiches filled with Latin American flavours. The humble premises in East Melbourne are cosy and welcoming, and the single origin Axil coffee is always perfectly served—a must-visit for you bean buffs.

Sir Charles is the latest cafe to grace Johnston Street in Fitzroy. And grace it has in abundance. The space is light and spacious, with a stunning modern decor of stone, bleached wood, aqua stripes, and copper accents. Whether you’re after breakfast or dinner, Sir Charles is open for all, with a modern Asian influenced menu. It’s a hard choice between the Warm Wagyu Beef Salad with kimchi, sweet tamarind and puffed grains, or the Pan Fried Duck Breast with pickled watermelon and lychee salad. Luxury Japanese dining fanatics, rejoyce! Esteemed sushi chef Koichi Minamishima's Japanese restaurant in Richmond, Minamishima, offers some of the best sushi in Melbourne. Its weekend brunch menu includes a delicious carrot sumac falafel—perfect for vegans—and the premises is licenced, serving beer, wine and a small selection of cocktails with lunch and dinner.

Addicted to their jobs, the owners of Addict Food and Coffee on Johnston Street in Fitzroy are all about the coffee and food they serve in their sun-drenched corner cafe. One of Fitzroy's best cafes, Addict's breakfast and brunch menu offers creative takes on the classics (we love the corn fritters with kasundi, haloumi and poached eggs), while lunch is anything but boring. Hop over to Addict and meet the team for a cuppa. You'll be addicted.

Fitzroy cafe Pavlov's Duck has had a healthy makeover and we're a little bit obsessed! The Smith Street favourite now offers an amazing breakfast and lunch menu, inspired by the rich and flavoursome cuisine of Sri Lanka, with standout dishes including the Lankan Frenchy (an organic croissant with a coconut, hint of chilli, lemon and parsley salad topped with a boiled egg) and the ‘Pol’ Roti (house made coconut roti with onions, spiced red lentils and a boiled egg).

The creation of husband and wife team, Sam and Kyleigh Fisher, tanner+teague is a brilliant shop in Brunswick East selling chic clothing for both children and adults. Inspired by Sam and Kyleigh's time living overseas, the tanner+teague line started with clothing and accessories for littlies but soon grew to include men's and women's fashion after requests came flooding in from the big kids. While the line has an obvious European influence, garments are made in Melbourne, so you can stock up on pieces without a hint of shopper's remorse!

Located on quirky Gertrude Street in Fitzroy, Handsom clothing is your one-stop-shop for women's fashion, men's fashion, leather goods, gifts and more. The clothing range is a great mix of simple shapes in bright colours and cool prints - easy to mix, match and strut the streets in. Add one of their roomy leather bags and a piece or two of statement silver jewellery and you're set! One of the coolest Melbourne shopping spots we've discovered.

South Yarra smoothie bar, Green Cup, has taken Chapel Street by storm, serving tasty green smoothies, acai bowls, superfood snacks and smashed avo to the masses. Their blends have been thoughtfully considered, with Green Cup packing each smoothie full of the freshest local and seasonal produce - yum! Green Cup's signature is the Green Cup Smoothie (no surprises there!), a tasty blend of banana, kale, spinach, stawberries, mesquite powder, coconut water and much more!

The Odd Spot Cafe is the new kid on the cafe block, setting up shop in Newport late 2014. This fun and friendly cafe serves up some of the best coffee on the westside, along with tasty breakfasts, nutritious lunches, homemade cakes and more. The smashed avo with super greens is an absolute must-try...one of the best breakfasts in Melbourne!
