Farms You Can Actually Stay On In WA

By Ella Liascos - 19 Apr 2017

Anyone else sick of the same old, humdrum routine? Thought so. Have you started looking for thrills outside of tasty treats and the occasional tipple (read: entire bottle) of wine? Us too. Perhaps you’ve begun spitting into the wind, just to feel the rush of adrenaline chance can give you.

Yeah. You need a holiday.

What better way to take a load off than by chucking on your gumboots and embracing the outdoors with a farm stay? Like a loyal sheep dog (but with a little less of a penchant for running) we’ve rounded up the best farm stays from the Perth Hills to the Karridale and everything in between.

Practice your hay baling; we’re hitting the paddocks. Here are 8 farms you can actually stay on in WA.

Pinda Lodge

Margaret River

On the banks of Margaret River you’ll find the Pinda Lodge, a luxury bed and breakfast that despite its farm-stay feel, is only a ten-minute drive from the centre of town. Surrounded by wineries, golf courses, cape-to-cape walking tracks and famous surf breaks; fuel up on their complimentary continental breakfast before switching to adventure mode for the day. In the evening, head back and hang out in the Jacuzzi or under a garden gazebo with a good book and watch the odd kangaroo hop by—how’s the serenity?

Blue Hills Farm Stay

Harvey

With three rammed earth chalets overlooking the river and rolling green hills, the Blue Hills Farm Stay is the perfect setting to escape city life for a while. With a fully contained kitchen, each beautiful chalet sleeps six, so you can bring the whole family with you and entertain the little ones with activities on the farm; from animal feeding and pony rides to bushwalks and trampolines. Gather over the communal outdoor BBQ for the evening, and wind down with a glass of red after spending the day fishing, devouring samples at the cheese factory, swimming in the dam or hanging out at the brewery.

Dunsborough Rail Carriages And Farm Cottages

Dunsborough

If staying in a converted train carriage wasn’t picturesque enough, add 40-hectares and endless peppermint trees and you’ve got the tranquil getaway that dreams are made of. The self-contained cottages at Dunborough Rail Carriranges and Farm Cottages lend themselves perfectly to a weekend vacation for a family of any size, especially if you’re looking for a bushwalking or breakfast-on-the-veranda, kind of holiday.

Karridale Cottages

Karridale

Located south of Margaret River between Caves Road and Bussell Highway, this quaint town was estimated to have just under 300 people in it when they last counted in 2006, making the Karridale Cottages a convenient getaway when you don’t want to be around other humans for a while. The rustic studio cottages are idyllic with a luxurious leather couch, a queen bed of fresh linen and a standing vintage bathtub with Corynnes Natural Soap and bath salts to bathe with. With a potbelly fire place, this makes for the perfect winter retreat, especially if you’re wanting to escape on a romantic getaway with bae for the weekend.

Hilborne Cottage Perth

Perth Hills

A scenic 45-minute drive is all it takes to reach the lush, greener pastures of the Hilborne Cottages. If you’re after a wholesome getaway, the cottage is perfectly situated for bush walkers, cyclists and horse riders with more than one beautiful trail to explore, including the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail and the Keps Track. If you happen to own a horse, you might be interested to know that they also welcome horses on the farm at $20 a night and dogs upon request, so you can bring your furry friends along the trail with you. The grey weatherboard cottage has two bedrooms, one queen and two king singles and is completely self-contained with a kitchen that includes tea, coffee and free range eggs available directly from the farm.

Settlers Rest

Swan Valley

For lovers of character homes and animals, the Settlers Rest Farm Cottage was built around the turn of the 20th century and is fully restored with the comfort of modern facilities and the charm of old Australian architecture. Bring your Blundstones because there’s plenty to do on the farm if you so desire, from hanging out in the stables, walking the horses, handfeeding their animals, collecting eggs and partaking in general day-to-day farm life. The wide open space and clean country air makes it hard to believe you’re only a 20-minute drive away from Perth, making the Settlers Rest a convenient and very achievable weekend getaway.

Foragers

Pemberton

It really doesn’t get more picturesque than having a cup of tea out the front of your luxury chalet, with little Jemima Puddle Ducks running around. If you’re a foody, Foragers location in the southern forests region is the perfect place to come and enjoy the beauty and the produce of this bountiful region. A remarkable place for high quality food, spend your days checking out beautiful orchards, vineyards, fishing for marron or trout or tasting the cool climate wines produced in Pemberton.

Edgecombe Chalets

Swan Valley

For a holiday that’s only 20 minutes away from home, Edgecombe Chalets provides all the necessary ingredients for the perfect getaway. With four chalets to choose from, surrounded by citrus trees and wine country, you’re only minutes away from some world class wineries, restaurants and specialist shops in the Ellenbrook area. The accommodation is housed in a quintessentially Australian corrugated tin roof chalet, with modern interiors with three bedrooms, four beds and one shower that can house six guests at a time.
