A lobster frites special

With so much Perth food news going down it's easy to miss a thing or two. Luckily we've got you covered, though.

Here's all the Perth food news you may have missed this week.

Brendan Pang’s Popular Dumpling Spot, Bumplings, Is Closing For Good This May

Brendan Pan at Bumplings

Brandan Pang—former Masterchef contestant and Perth's king of dumplings—took to Instagram today to announce the oh-so sad closure of his beloved dumpling joint inside Freo’s Sunshine Harvester Works.

What started as a pop-up restaurant following his run on Masterchef, well and truly took root. Bumplings served over one million of those signature plump little guys in the five years since opening—so to say they'll be missed is an understatement. Pang didn’t make the decision lightly, though.

“Closing Bumplings has been a really tough call to make,” he said.

“I realised that I’ve been spreading myself too thin… juggling being a cooking content creator and author. If I’m going commit to something, I want to give it 100%, and, unfortunately, I can’t give Bumplings that right now.”

He went on to say it wouldn’t be the end. He’ll be sharing some of his most popular recipes (like Dan Dan Noodles) across social media very soon so you can recreate the BUmplings magic at home.

Bumplings will officially serve its last dumplings on Sunday 12 May. Get down and fill up while you can.

Bib & Tucker's Lobster Frites special is available every Thursday night throughout May and June. To secure yours, you will need to book ahead here. We suggest you get in before everyone else catches on.

An Exclusive Pop-Up From Singapore's Michelin Starred Barbecue Joint, Burnt Ends, Is Coming To Perth This May

A WA marron dish as part of Burnt Ends' pop-up coming to Perth
Image credit: Burnt Ends Pop-Up | Supplied

It’s not every day we get a Michelin Star-studded pop-up of this calibre here in Perth. But considering Dave Pynt—Head Chef and Co-Founder of Singapore’s globally celebrated Burnt Ends restaurant—is Perth-born, we reckon it's only fair he brings a touch of his refined barbecue brilliance back home.

Pynt will take over Cottesloe’s Latin American-inspired hot spot, Indigo Oscar, for two days only this May 10 and 11—teaming up with Frankland River wine producer, Swinney Wines, on a series of wine-matched (and flame-touched) degustations that you won’t want to miss.

Infused with the finest WA produce, the exclusive collab menu will give you a chance to explore the kind of fiery high-end barbecue delights Burnt Ends is known for (minus the Singapore flights). Think: smoked quail egg and caviar, marron with tobiko and kombu smoked butter beurre blanc, 45-day dry aged Blackmore’s striploin and a very special spin on the classic pavlova.

There are only three sittings available—two 12-course dinners ($350pp) and one 8-course lunch ($295pp)—so we suggest jumping on tickets as soon as they drop 9am Thursday 18 April.

The Future Of Fine Dining In Perth Has Been Revealed In This Soon-To-Open Brasserie By The Sea—Led By A GM Who's Served The British Royal Family

White tablecloths, marble, jacketed wait staff and the finest cuts of steak—Gibney is primed to be the fanciest of all the venues under George Kailis' name when the 160-seat brasserie opens in South Cottesloe this May.

The 600 square meters of oceanfront hospitality will serve up unmatched views all the way to Rottnest and super luxe Californian country club vibes courtesy of a multi-million dollar design from Rezen Studio—the local architecture and interior design firm behind fellow stunners like La Lune and Vin Populi.

Inspired by traditional steakhouses and brasseries throughout Europe, London and New York City, Gibney's menu will be all about simple classics done well. Think: an old school caesar salad, a cracking bowl of pasta or one of six top-tier steak cuts washed down with a good wine. There will also be a dedicated seafood grill section and a crustacean bar, in case you need a reminder about how close you are to the sea you are here. Plus, keep an eye out for the dessert trolley and other tableside serving theatrics.

Of course, to bring such a grand vision to life, you need an all-star team—and from the sound of their recent team announcement, they're off to a strong start. Head here to suss out some of the appointments to note from Head Chef James Cole-Bowen to General Manager Craig Hammond.

Gibney is due to open at 40 Marine Parade South Cottesloe this May, with bookings now open here.

Backed by great drinks, a killer soundtrack and slick American-inspired diner decor, the Northbridge newbie is bound to become a bustling hang-out in no time.

"We wanted something a little playful, and a little serious, and a little naughty," says co-owner Braeden La Marr. "The classic comforting and confronting flavours of the south, with something delicious to wash it down with.”

South Bird is officially open at 175 William Street, Northbridge. Read more about the opening here.

Stories, The New Multi-Venue Dining Mecca Taking Over Yagan Square, Opens This Month

Yagan Square's new Stories precinct

If you're familiar with The Old Synagogue (Fremantle), The Beaufort (Mount Lawley) or The Station (South Perth), then you've seen the kind of venues-within-a-venue magic hospo group Nokturnl can work. Transforming heritage spaces into vibrant new bar and dining hubs has kinda become their thing—and they've proven they know how to do it damn well.

Due to open this April, Stories is their latest and most ambitious multi-venue project yet. It promises to breathe new life into the dormant Yagan Square dining precinct that connects the CBD and Northbridge, with a combined capacity of a whopping 2,500 across nine bars, three restaurants and a private dining space.

Complete with a multi-storey pub, beer hall, speakeasy, rooftop bar and three restaurants, not to mention the CBD’s biggest beer garden, Stories is an absolute beast of a venue.

Its size has given Nokturnl’s Ross Drennan and Drew Flanagan the space and freedom to bring a little something for everyone into the mix. Whether you're craving a late night with your mates, a date night dinner or a casual Saturday out with the fam, there's a venue in Stories to suit your vibe.

Landing Wednesday 10 April, Alba is the first cab off the rank. Offering up a modern Italian menu courtesy of head chef Adam Szymankiewicz, it's comfort food, with a sophisticated touch.

Karla, a modern Asian eatery led by Thai-born head chef, Ben Pienprasop (ex-Chin Chin), and Ugly Baby, a casual multi-story restaurant and canteen with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean eats, are both due to open before the end of the month alongside a string of new bars.

Subscribe for the latest on all the venues within Stories as they open.

If you're keen to embrace the holiday vibes, you can chase it all down with a few Bloody Maria's or mimosas before heading home for a well-timed snooze. Otherwise, there's always bottomless drip coffee to set your day off right.

When comfort is on the cards, only a bowl of Qin’s Lanzhou noodles will do. The hand-pulled noodles are made to order at your chosen thickness and width and served in an enormous bowl of seriously slurp-worthy broth. Whether you go spicy or a simple beef broth, it’s like a warm hug in a bowl. Throw on unlimited noodle refills and it's no wonder this spot sent Perth into a spin when it first opened in Vic Park—with people queuing around the block just to try Perth's first authentic Lanzhou beef noodle.

Now you don't have to head to the burbs, you can get Qin's iconic noodles in the heart of Northbridge at 2/139 Newcastle St. Open for lunch and dinner every day apart from Tuesday, the new venue also has a Milk Flower inside, so you can wash down your feed with a refreshing bubble tea while you're at it.

Oh and this isn't the only new Qin's outlet to note. They're also coming soon to Karrinyup's level one food court, so keep your eyes peeled for that one too.

Then hit up the topping buffet to load up with toppings like peanut butter, chocolate, fresh fruit and more of your faves.

Nobody is getting bored at Varsity's new 1000-capacity mega venue in Cannington. They've kitted every inch of the massive indoor-outdoor space out with custom murals, neons and endless screens so you've always got eyes on the action. Plus, they've thrown in a Duckpin Bowling alley (think ten-pin bowling, but smaller), where you can have burgers and bevs delivered to you as you play, and a full arcade to rival Timezone in its heyday, complete with cutting-edge games and a gift shop where you can redeem your points for prizes. All this is on top of what they're best known for—their epic burgers, sides and drinks. It's basically one big ol' playground of good times.

Bagel O's Is Opening A Second Location In Subiaco

A loaded bagel
Image credit: Bagel O's | Instagram

If you're a fan of loaded NYC-style bagels, you'll already be familiar with Bagel O's. The lines out the door of their Mount Lawley cafe are a dead giveaway that these hefty treats have reached cult status.

That's why we're so stoked to see the signature Bagel O's signage pop up on the streets of Subiaco. It's still early days, with the guys saying they're still in the design and build phase so can't reveal too much more just yet, but they did confirm a new Subi Bagel O's is indeed coming soon to Rokeby Road. Until then, chuck them a follow to be the first to hear when the new store is due.

Hailing from the east coast, the new Kickin Inn Perth restaurant offers up a southern style seafood boil experience with no cutlery or plates.

Bags are emptied directly onto your table, with pipi’s, whole fresh prawns, mussels, peeled prawns, blue swimmer crabs and potatoes spilling out for you to enjoy—all smothered in a finger-licking good cajun-style marinade. Good thing they provide bibs and gloves, 'cause this feast is going to get messy.

Perth's northern suburbs are in for treat, with the crew from Milky Lane announcing it's largest ever venue has just opened in Currumbine. Best known for its out-of-this-world burgers and sides, big boozy shakes and bold hip-hop vibes, Milky Lane's creations are hardly winning you any health points, but that hasn't held them back. Since opening up in Elizabeth Quay in 2022, the burger joint's earned plenty of raving fans here in Perth, all eager to wrap their mits around their latest over-the-top eats. At the new spot, you'll find all your cult faves, as well as exclusive menu items and of course whatever wild specials are on that month.

Mary St Bakery Is Doing After Dark Burgers, BBQ, Booze And Gelato Stuffed Doughnuts

Given the string of 40+ degree days (and 30-something nights), who could blame you for steering clear of the kitchen right now? Not us, and clearly not the good folks at Mary St Bakery. They're copping the heat to bring you a balmy new after dark pop-up outta their City Beach cafe.

Swing by from 5pm til 9pm Thursday to Sunday to try their new menu featuring a solid lineup of burgs, BBQ and sides, topped off with gelato by the scoop and gelato stuffed brioche cinny doughnuts (drool). If you're eating in, throw on something chilled from the booze list—they'll have craft beer, good wine and canned margaritas on offer. Otherwise, grab a feed to go and enjoy it picnic style down at the beach or safely back in your air conditioned lounge room.

A Slick New Chef-Led Banh Mi And Coffee Bar Has Landed In Crawley

Newin Banh Mi

Headed up by Chef Liem Nguyen (LiDo Restaurant), Newin is serving chef'd up takes on traditional banh mi to rival some of the best around Perth.

For Nguyen, it's all about the little details, from freshly toasting and making each bread roll to order and pounding out pork floss to methodically distributing pre-crushed chilli via a squeezey bottle to ensure consistent heat throughout—after all, balance is key. The toasted touch means each banh mi comes out slightly warm, delivering a good crunch with each bite (without being so sharp it rips your mouth apart) and a super soft bready centre that perfectly takes on those familiar banh mi flavours.

There's only a handful of banh mis to choose from—a cripsy pork belly, traditional cold cuts, coca cola chicken, vegetarian and a rotating special like the pork and prawn meatball they had on when we visited—and they're all still pretty reasonably priced at just $10-$12 a pop. They hinted at the possibility of adding some fresh Vietnamese rolls and salads down the line, but they're keen to keep things simple for now.

Alongside their regular cafe espresso offering, they're also doing Vietnamese iced coffee and sugarcane and watermelon juices which should sort you out on a hot summer's day.

The Station Is Now Serving Breakfasts Like Croque Monsieurs And French Toast Fingers

Already home to an approachable gastropub and luxe French basement restaurant, the gorgeous South Perth spot has just launched a brand new breakfast running from 6.30am to 11am Monday to Saturday and from 7am to 11am on Sunday.

With Head Chef Ludo behind the menu, you'll notice a few French-inspired dishes including an incredibly cheesy Croque Monsieur and pretty French Toast Fingers, not to mention a whole patisserie selection too, alongside Aussie breakfast staples like smashed avo, buttermilk pancakes and chilli scrambled eggs. Coffee, juices and boozy options are all flowing too, so whether you keep it PG with an iced latte or go all in on breakfast martinis is up to you.

A Huge New $3 Million BrewDog Venue Has Just Opened In The Old Gordon Street Garage Site

BrewDog coming to Perth
Image credit: BrewDog | Shot By Thom

Perth scored its first BrewDog venue, with local hospo group, Aus Venue Co, bringing the $3 million venue to life.

Transforming the former Gordon Street Garage site, Perth's first BrewDog venue has enough space for 600 thirsty patrons across the 975sqm bar and beer garden. The look of the space has been designed to suit the existing warehouse vibes, with leather seating, industrial lighting and the odd splash of neon. There’s also arcade games and a retail store if you fancy some merch.

Head to the bar and you’ll find 20 taps pouring the good stuff, including a solid lineup of Brissie-brewed BrewDog beers along with tap takeovers and collabs from local breweries. There’ll also be plenty of non-beer—spirits, wines, cocktails and ciders—and non-alc options to ensure everyone has something to sip.

Everyone has been catered for in the kitchen as well, with 50% of the menu plant-based, and a massive list of vegan and veggie plates on offer. Of course, if you’d prefer to stick to burgers, wings and pizzas, they’ll have you covered too. You can also head in for all-year-round specials like 2-4-1 Vegan Mondays and All You Can Eat Wings for $25 on Wing Wednesdays.

This New Italian Deli In Nedlands Is Slinging Some Of Perth's Finest Rolls And Focaccias

Mortadeli rolls

Mortadeli only opened its doors about a month ago, but you'd think this Nedlands gem had been here for decades given how chummy customers are with the man behind the counter.

The menu is plastered on a chalkboard above the deli counter, where you'll find co-owners working in partnership to fill sandwich after sandwich with lashings of freshly sliced continental meats, antipasti and other housemade fillings—with staff occasionally running out from the kitchen with crispy onions, meatballs or freshly fried prawns.

Choosing is not easy. Its namesake, The Mortadeli, is a great place to start though, made with thinly sliced mortadella, stracciatella, pistachio cream, semi dried tomatoes and fresh rocket. Similarly, you can't go wrong with something simple like the Caprese (prosciutto, fior di latte, rocket, basil, heirloom tomato and balsamic) or Pavarotti (parma ham, stracciatella, figs, rocket and balsamic).

For something with a bit of heat, The Diavolo is another winner, while seafood fans will wanna check out their salted cod roll (the Bacala Montecata). There's also the Porchetta roll—think thinly sliced roast pork roll (made in house), lightly seasoned ricotta, roasted peppers, rocket and truffle oil. Plus, the classic Continental roll slaps here too.

Whatever you choose, you can expect generous portions (they're not skimping on anything), a well balanced mix of fillings, and of course, the highest quality ingredients. Plus, the guy behind the counter is an absolute charmer and seriously entertaining to watch, so you can't help but leave Mortadeli with a smile on your face.

Each sanga will set you back $17-$18, which might sound a little steep at first, but we reckon it's more than reasonable for some of the biggest and best Italian sandwiches in Perth.

Mortadeli is now open seven days a week at 23A Hampden Rd, Nedlands WA.

A New Multi-Venue Precinct From The Old Synagogue And Beaufort Has Just Opened In South Perth

Ludo inside The Station
Image credit: The Station | Shot By Thom

After two successful heritage transformations, Nokturnl—the hospo crew behind popular multi-venue precincts The Old Synagogue (Fremantle) and The Beaufort (Mount Lawley)—are set to do it all again; this time with a 1908 federation style Police Station on the corner of Labouchere Road and Mends Street in South Perth.

Fresh from its $8 million dollar reno, The Station follows the same successful venues-within-a-venue concept, with a few distinct spaces to explore: a sophisticated cafe (opening for breakfast in 2024), a large gastropub complete with wine courtyards and beer gardens aplenty, and an elegant 130-seat French basement restaurant, Ludu, that takes its name from head chef Ludovic “Ludo” Mulot (ex-Rockpool Bar & Grill).

With his wide-spanning global culinary experience, Mulot will bring refined technique and a touch of French opulence to South Perth, with dishes like Western Rock lobster eclair with tarragon, celery and caviar and Wagin duck sausage with sautéed red cabbage, apple and red wine jus.

"We’ve had a lot of fun with Ludo since he came to us at The Old Synagogue," says Co-owner Ross Drennan. "We love working with him and this restaurant (Ludo) is a nod to him and recognition of his talents. We always knew Ludo’s real passion was for French cooking and this is going to be his culinary legacy. This is his job for life.”

Miss Chow's Just Opened Perth's First Asian-Italian Fusion Restaurant

Lygon Lane in Claremont
Image credit: Lygon Lane | Instagram

Didn't see this one coming? Neither, but Asian European fusion is well and truly on the rise. The key to it actually being good and not just a novelty lies in delivering good quality, well-executed food, according to Jackie Chan. And considering the growing success of Miss Chow's and the rest of Perth's Dumpling Queen's empire (including Lucy Luu's, Lena's and KiRi Japanese), we reckon she's just the person to nail it. The fact she's roped in an Italian-born chef with Michelin Star restaurant experience only convinces us more.

Now open in Claremont, Lygon Lane is the newest venue from Jackie Chan and the Miss Chow's crew and fuses the best of Italian and Asian flavours. Think kung pao chicken arancini, Chinese sausage (lap cheong) fettuccine carbonara and matcha and ricotta tiramisu. Plus, there's also a substantial drinks list too, including over 150 wines and curated cocktails to suit the venue's chic vibe.

Canteen Has Opened In Applecross With An All-New Breakfast Menu

Canteen Pizza breakfast
Image credit: Canteen Pizza | Ryan Cubbage

When Cottesloe fave, Canteen Pizza, closed up in March, we shed more than a few tears. Originally launched as a pop-up in 2017, the seaside pizzeria quickly became a staple thanks to its practically perfect woodfired pizzas, great drinks and cruisy atmosphere. Well, now, Canteen Pizza is finally back.

You won’t find them at their old beachside digs, though. They’ve opened a brand new pizzeria over in the leafy riverside burb of Applecross. Don’t worry, the elevated new space is every bit as warm and inviting, with a slick neutral palette, cosy booths and endless alfresco seating to see you through the balmy summer nights.

Perhaps most exciting about the new spot though is the expanded opening hours. You can drop in anytime from 7am til late, seven days a week, with pizzetta, paninis and house made crumpets on in the AM and Neapolitan style pizzas, antipasti and seafood going til late. The kitchen is headed up by Head Chef Nicola Lunardi and Pizzaiolo Vincenzo Basco who have both been with the pizzeria since day one, so you'll find a good mix of familiar faves and new dishes to try.

Feeling thirsty? You’re pretty well covered on drinks too. Amidst the closing down drama, you may have missed that Canteen was awarded three glasses by Australian Wine List of the Year, and best believe this new list is every bit as good. We’re also vibing the stellar lineup of Italian style bitters, aperitifs and Amaro. A little limoncello spritz is always a good idea.

Canteen Pizza is now open at 32 Ardross Street, Applecross.

One of Sydney's most iconic steakhouses, 6HEAD, has finally made its way out west, with a brand new restaurant opening at the base of the new Chevron Tower at One The Esplanade in Elizabeth Quay.

The 185-seat dining space offers some of the best riverfront views around, backed up by a swanky steakhouse offering primed for all your long lunches, date nights and special occasions to come.

For those unfamiliar with the 6Head name, the restaurant is best known for its carefully curated menu that focuses on six cuts of premium steak: rump, ribeye, T-bone, eye fillet, scotch fillet, and sirloin—most of which are designed to be shared, with large steaks cut to serve at the table and served alongside seasonal sides and indulgent sauces.

Of course, if choosing isn't your thing you can always keep it simple with one of their decadent set menus courtesy of Seagrass Group's Head Of Culinary Chef Sean Hall and Perth-born Head Chef Shane Middleton. Just be sure to throw on a cocktail or glass of something good while you're at it—the drinks offering is just as impressive.

To top off the premium offering, there's also a high-end, locally sourced seafood selection with a dedicated raw bar stocked with Blue Ridge Marron, Fremantle Octopus, East Coast Appellation Oysters and more from the local legends at Finn's Seafood.

6Head is now open in Elizabeth Quay. Book here.
