Hark, the herald angels sing. It’s the end of the year, and that can only mean one thing! It’s time for some serious navel-gazing and a fresh batch of year-in-review content. Because we’re curious little beings who love nothing more than analysing our own habits (hello, Spotify Wrapped), we’re adding one more wrap-up to the pile.

If our Uber Eats history could talk, what would it say? Well, in light of the app having just clocked one billion deliveries in Australia (!!!), we actually do have a pretty fascinating snapshot of our sunburnt country’s collective food diary.

Now in its seventh year globally, the Uber Eats Cravings Report analyses millions of orders to reveal the trends, surprises and cravings shaping how Australians eat, drink and live.

And this year’s edition reveals our collective tummies have been busy. We’re talking a two-year matcha boom, a zero-sugar soft drink takeover and one absolute legend who ordered 70 bananas in a single order (are they running a covert monkey sanctuary or something? We have questions).

“Whether it's 6am coffees, late-night chips, weekly groceries or 70 bananas in one go–Aussies have made Uber Eats part of their daily routine. We’re proud to help customers get (almost) anything when they need it most,” Ed Kitchen, Managing Director of Uber Eats Australia and New Zealand, explained about our habits.

So buckle up, grab a snack (statistically speaking, it’s probably something hot-chippy-related), and get ready to peek behind the curtain of Australia’s true-blue appetite.

Matcha On Tap

Aussies are head-over-heels in love with the green goodness, and the numbers from the report prove it. In two years alone, orders for home-delivered matchas have skyrocketed to 217%. Yes, even in this economy, we’re still ordering matcha to our doorsteps, showing that despite feeling the extreme pinch, we still deserve a little treat.

And which state leads the matcha madness? NSW has clocked up hundreds of thousands of orders for the green tea treat, taking out the top spot in the matcha Stan race.

Caffeine Reigns Supreme

Despite our matcha obsession, at the heart of it, we’re still a nation being fuelled by good-old-fashioned bean juice. Uber Eats plays a crucial role in our morning routine, with breakfast orders booming across the country.

Cappuccinos are the order du jour in NSW, ACT and WA (in fact, one person ordered 400 caps over 12 months! That’s a lot of choccie powder), while SA, VIC and TAS are a latte-sipping society, and finally, QLD and NT prefer iced lattes to get them through their warmer weather. Story checks.

But the biggest plot twist? It looks like we’ve moved past the flat white, as it didn’t rank in any top orders anywhere. RIP to the flat white.

As for our other beverage habits? Orders for zero-sugar soft drinks more than doubled year-on-year, revealing we’re still enjoying our fizzy refreshments just without the sugar crash.

A Return To Grease Lightning

Sure, our country may boast some of the best restaurants in the Southern Hemisphere, but at the crux of it, sometimes, nothing beats a bit of grease. That’s right, Australia’s preferred fast-food order is the humble ten-piece nuggets-and-burger combo.

This inimitable duo was our most-ordered combo of the year, proving we’re all secretly comfort food lovers just doing our god-damned best.

Our State-By-State Eating Personalities, Revealed

Friendly state rivalry has always been the beating heart of our nation, and now we have even more ammo should we ever need to poke fun at any of our neighbours. QLD, VIC, TAS and WA are proudly powered by potatoes and are big on the hot chips orders.

While NSW and ACT are Pad Thai devotees through and through, SA and the NT are all about the garlic bread and naan because, let’s face it, carbs are life.

When it comes to ice cream, every state has its own distinct vibe.

Chocolate is the go-to in NSW and the ACT, while QLD and WA are all about choc-chip cookie dough. VIC keeps things classic with vanilla, and SA is flying the flag for cookies and cream.

Oh-so-sweet and unique, just like each state.

Perhaps our favourite stat from the entire report? How we chose to show love to our parents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Forget flowers and choccie because apparently the ultimate gift is… checks notes… nuggets?!

Yep. The most-ordered item on both days was the trusty ten-piece nuggs. Iconic behaviour, Australia. Wanna make your own delish nuggets? Try Morgan Hipworth's Chicken Nugget Recipe.
