I don't know about you, but as soon as the clock strikes three, I need something sweet in my sugar-craving little belly of nom noms. Maybe it's because it makes the time go quicker on a never-ending workday, or perhaps it's because it provides that little bit of excitement on a weekend outing with friends (ooooh cake!). Whether it's chocolate decadence in the form of cakes and doughnuts, or sugary delights and extravagant high teas, there is definitely an afternoon tea option to satisfy just about any craving. As firm believers in the afternoon tea at TUL, we thought it was only fair to share the love. So without further ado, here are 7 of our favourite spots for afternoon tea in Melbourne. Enjoy.
Adriano Zumbo Patissier | South Yarra
One word: the zonut. Two words: maple bacon. This perfect little mass of pastry at Zumbo encompasses everything that is right in the world – and that's not an exaggeration. Bite inside and you'll soon be ooh-ing and ahh-ing in agreement just like the rest of us. Sure this little hybrid croissant/doughnut is a lot to get your head around at first, what with the unlikely marriage of bacon and maple cream, but it's the perfect afternoon tea pick-me-up and, in our opinion, the holiest of all the matrimonies. Wash it back with a yummy latte or sweeter than sweet hot chocolate and you'll have the recipe for a perfect afternoon tea in Melbourne.
LuxBite | South Yarra
'Life is uncertain, eat dessert first' is the motto for this cute little Toorak Road café specialising in all things dessert. From their famous macarons available in flavours like vanilla creme brulee, sour strawberry and bamboo oolong tea, to their truly impressive range of standout cakes – you'll discover more than one treat worth gobbling up, we promise. Kick things off with the 'Be My Love' cake. This little guy is a best-seller, featuring milk chocolate mousse and raspberry cream with dark chocolate crunch and freeze dried raspberries. Need we go on? Then there's the gorgeous Endless Love, inspired by Pierre Herme's isphana, which consists of lychee ganache, rose cream and fresh raspberries – it pretty much looks like a gigantic macaron with a to-die-for filling. Why not go all out and order the salted caramel hot choc for the perfect afternoon tea at LuxBite?
Hotel Windsor | Melbourne CBD
Roll out the red carpet and dress up in your finery for this, dear Listers, is the most indulgent afternoon tea in Melbourne. Enter the beautiful Hotel Windsor for a stunning high tea of epic proportion. Sip on a glass of bubbly as you devour a three-tiered stand of the Hotel Windsor's famous traditional and sultana scones with lashings of double cream, jam and lemon curd. Nibble on delicate finger sandwiches made of fancy fillings that you'll just have to re-create at home, and gasp with excitement when it's time for the lavish dessert buffet boasting a glorious selection of gateaux and pastries. Enjoy goodies like traditional lemon meringue pie, chocolate tart, cheesecake and of course, the not-to-be-missed chocolate fondue fountain. There's also a great range of teas to accompany. Just make sure you book ahead, this place packs a crowd. A Melbourne high tea institution for good reason.
Doughboys Doughnuts | Melbourne CBD
If you haven't seen these incredibly indulgent (and super photogenic) doughnuts all over your insta-feed, then it's time you got the memo because Doughboys Doughnuts is where the party's at! Enjoy fancy toppings like delish salted caramel, yummy banana butterscotch, maple bacon, s'mores… and loads more. These babies are super light and doughy, which means you'll gobble them up quickly – ideal for a quick CBD afternoon tea break. The good news is they're not oil-ridden or sickly sweet either, so a you'll get a nice flavour hit when you bite in, but won't feel like you ate a tonne of sugar as soon as you finish. Find Doughboys right near the Queen Vic Market on Queen Street or visit one of the many cafes they stock. Go on, you know you want to!
Parisian Patisserie Boulangerie | Essendon
Get your French pastry fix in the heart of Essendon at the ever popular Parisian Patisserie Boulangerie. What a mouthful?! This gorgeous café is jam packed with extravagant French fantasies like deliciously rich chocolate eclairs, creamy vanilla slices, gorgeous petit fours and the number one best seller: the almond croissant. This baby is so damn good, it's got itself a cult following! It's also massive, but trust us, after one bite any thoughts of sharing will quickly fly out the window. Make sure you also leave room for the absolutely spectacular crème beignets, which are brioche based doughnuts with a scrumptious custard, jam or chocolate filling. There's also a pretty great selection of teas for the tea lovers out there and the guys do a damn good coffee, too. Our advice for this patisserie? Don't limit yourself.
Miss Marple's Tearoom | Sassafras Mt Dandenong
When you think of afternoon tea, you simply cannot forget to include scones, and you'll find the best ones (yes we're calling it) at Miss Marple's Tearoom in Sassafras. Your Devonshire scone order will include two larger-than-your-average fluffy scones – choose from plain or fruit, or go crazy and order one of each. Each serve comes with Miss Marple's own delicious home-made rasberry jam and loads of freshly whipped cream. But if you want to go all out (and we recommend you do this at least once), try the Vicar's Folly and brace yourself for an amazing congregation of butterscotch ice-cream with honeycomb chunks, chocolate, whipped cream and caramel fudge. It doesn't get much better than this, ladies and gents. Miss Marples is the perfect weekend afternoon tea destination but there is a waiting list, so you'd better get to it!
Chez Dré | South Melbourne
One of the most delicious afternoon tea destinations in Melbourne, these clever kids in South Melbourne know a thing or two about catering to Melbourne's sweet-tooth. Visit Chez Dré for an exciting menu of French desserts such as the flavour sensation that is the Caramel-Mandarin dome. Take a spoonful of this beautiful dome-shaped dessert to reveal layers of vanilla brulee, mandarin jelly, almond cake and a heavenly 'caramelia' mousse. If you're a coffee fan, you can't go past the Tiramisu Éclair with stand out mascarpone chantilly, or for chocolate-lovers – the chocolate tart with ganache and rich chocolate mouse. Mmmm! Chez Dré also has a yummy offering of French pastries to enjoy with coffee, and a huge selection of macarons to tickle your palate.
