The Best Cheap Dates In Perth That Aren’t Completely Lame

By Kirsty Petrides - 27 Aug 2017

All the old people around us keep saying how bad the economy is at the moment, so we know we should be watching our pennies. We know we shouldn’t be recklessly spending our money. And we know we should probably take a time out from all smashed avo on toast we keep ordering.

But you know what doesn’t take a time out, guys? LOVE. Love doesn’t know when there is a recession. Love doesn’t suddenly disappear because the housing market has taken a nose dive. And love doesn’t say “Sorry, you’re really pretty and funny but I can’t take you on a date due to the looming financial crisis.”

We still need to go on dates, regardless of the state of our economy. So here are 22 of the best cheap dates in Perth that aren't totally lame. So you can still be free to love, even if your parents keep telling you to buy a house instead.

  1. Quiz nights at The Local. Impress your lady with your general knowledge by heading to The Local in South Fremantle for FREE Thursday night pub trivia. If you really like her, perhaps buy her a beer as well.

  2. Pizza and wine at Neighbourhood Pizza. The pizza here is delicious and cheap; it's BYO wine and beers; and they have a pool table. So after dinner, the girls can pretend they don’t know how to play pool and the boys can feel all big and strong teaching them how.

  3. Twilight sailing. If you sensing your date could be up for something more adventurous than dinner and a movie, try South of Perth Yacht Club which runs twilight sailing every Wednesday evening throughout the summer sailing season. It kicks off at 6.15pm so you can enjoy the sunset and speccy city views. Now that is romantic.

  4. Chinese at Old Lane Street Eats. Not only will you impress your date with your choice of delicious cuisine, it will be dirt cheap—entrees start at $4.40. And it's BYO.

  5. Chocolate and wine pairing in the Swan Valley. Gentlemen, if you want a home run, take a girl on a date that involves wine and chocolate. The Margaret River Chocolate Company and Providore run daily wine and chocolate pairing classes at their Swan Valley tasting centre for the very reasonable price of $30.

  6. Spanish tapas at Pinchos. Because they have dishes starting from one dollar. One dollar. No explanation required.

  7. Beer tasting at Little Creatures. Nothing says ‘I dig you’ like handing a girl a platter of free beer tasters. Little Creatures does beer samplings, where you can taste all their beers for the very reasonable amount of $10.

  8. Stroll through your local farmer's markets. Sure, it will be an early date, but it will be cheap. These are our favourite farmer's markets in Perth, and pretty much all of them are a food-lovers wonderland. Buy your date a hot coffee and a danish and go for a wander.

  9. Dinner at Gypsy Tapas House. Delicious share plates start from a mere 10 bucks. Plus there’s live music most nights, so you’re getting dinner AND a show. Extra brownie points from your date.

  10. Catch a flick at Luna on SX. This is the perfect place to go if you want to impress your date with a cultural film selection. Plus, the cinemas are small and very cosy, making for the perfect date night spot.

  11. Malaysian at Nasi Lemak Corner. The restaurant dishing up Perth’s best Malaysian also happens to be dishing up Perth’s best bargains. And they’re BYO. Perfect date night spot.

  12. Parmi and pint at Clarences. This cosy Mount Lawley bar is a perfect date spot, and their Monday night parmi and pint special is perfect for your hip pocket.

  13. Wine Club at the Lefty. A ticket to The Left Bank’s monthly wine club is a mere $20 and includes a presentation by the winemaker, generous wine tastings, light nibbles AND a Spiegelau Wine Glass. Yes that’s right, your date will get a take home gift to remember the amazing evening by. Kicking goals.

  14. South Beach Sunset Beach Markets. This one is only for summer time, but take your picnic rug, pack a bottle of wine and get a $10 food truck dinner at South Beach Sunset Markets in South Freo. The sunset adds to the romance as well.

  15. Sundays at Freo Arts Centre. Pack a picnic and head to Fremantle Arts Centre for free live music in the courtyard every Sunday afternoon from October through to March.

  16. Woodfired pizza at Young George. This lovely little East Freo gem does $15 woodfired pizza and beer on Tuesday nights—date sorted.

  17. Wine tasting at Strange Company. The Strange Tastes events at Strange Company bring you a different winemaker, brewer or distillery for free tastings every second Wednesday.

  18. Fish and chips at The South Beach Hotel. If you’ve got a Friday night date, head to the South Beach Hotel for a romantic meal of WA snapper and chips for $15.

  19. Jazz at The Ellington. If you want to impress your date with your mature taste in music, head to The Ellington. Tickets start at about 20 bucks and you can sit back and listen to some amazing local jazz musos.

  20. Or jazz at the Jazz Cellar. Get some BYO cheese, crackers and wine and take your date to this Mount Hawthorn hot spot. It’s a warm, cosy venue and tickets are just $25 each. Plus, you’ll get brownie points for having such an inventive idea.

  21. Strawberry picking at Bullsbrook Strawberry Farm. If you’re after something a little different, head on up to Bullsbrook for some romantic strawberry picking. All you pay is $10 for an empty tray, and then you and your beloved can frolick around the strawberry fields to fill it up.

  22. Kings Park picnics. Yes, everybody thinks it's lame to picnic at Kings Park, but it's not! Be proud of this magic city and its picnic-appropriate climate and get around it.
