Best New Restaurants

Willi’s Pizza Bar

Perth

Words by: Rebecca Keating

Get ready to clear your calendar thanks to the arrival of Perth’s slick new joint, Willi’s Pizza Bar.  From the legends behind Fleur, Willi’s is all about Detroit-style pan pizza paired with a wild wine list, killer cocktails and plates of pure happiness. Full of neon lights and an 80s funk soundtrack, the thick, cheesy and crispy square style pizza is an ode to modern North American flavours paired with Italian classics and funky cocktails.

With primi, pizza and contemporary delights, the menu is elite and will bring you nothing but pure joy. But we get it—the choice can be hard. Our advice? Go straight for the Felino with hot honey and a side of whipped anchovy toast followed by the vanilla gelato with olive oil and sea salt. It’s a ridiculously good way to round out a damn good meal.

To drink? The house dirty martini of course. The Willi-Nilly features none other than the hospo group’s own gin infused with bay leaf and tomato extra virgin olive oil and we guarantee it will knock your socks off. Not a martini type? We don’t forgive you, but the next best thing has to be the Pecan Old Fashioned full of butter-washed bourbon and toasted pecan goodness. Tastes just like a warm hug from Grandma.

Ah Um

Northbridge

Words by: Alice Dolphin

Ah, um, here’s an epic new dinner spot in town. If you’re itching for an intimate gastronomic experience paired with the chilled-out, uber-cool music at Astral Weeks, look no further than Ah Um. The seasonal rotating menu is full of surprises, and there’s a custom-built sound system so you can enjoy quality tracks in between bites. Simply head into Astral Weeks and you’ll find Ah Um behind the wooden door.

Chef Branden Scott (Wines of While) takes a simple yet spectacular ingredients-focused approach and lets local seafood do the talking (take scallop, hollandaise and kohlrabi, for example). The result? Really delicious, fresh share plates that will disappear very, very quickly. There’s just 25 spots per dining session though (with two sessions per night from Wednesday to Saturday), so get in quick and start sipping on sake.

Moon & Mary

Fremantle

Oysters and Moon & Mary

With Miss Chow's founder (Jacquie Chan) behind it, Moon & Mary was always going to be good. The new opening is the first venue under Chan's group to open in Fremantle and they've really gone all out, with three venues—a restaurant, speakeasy and yard bar—under the one heritage roof. They've even got a micro distillery going here too, which you can get stuck into via the bespoke cocktail menu or buy bottles to take home.

The food though, is what we're really here for. Head Chef Zane Morrison (ex-Running With Thieves) has absolutely killed it, with the menu serving banger after banger of modern Asian plates. From starters like wagyu carpaccio, scallop crudo, and crab and prawn wontons served in the most amazing coconut laksa broth (perfect for wiping up with your mantou bun) to crispy roast pork belly, WA Rock Lobster, and the dessert you will absolutely be saving room for: a velvety pandan and miso basque cheesecake.

Cassia

Fremantle

The team behind Cosy Del’s and Laika have just opened the doors to Cassia—a love letter to the classic Australian barbeque in the heart of Freo. Focussed around the venue's open kitchen, multi award-winning Head Chef Emily Jones has created a fire-fuelled menu where share-style smoked meats, fresh seafood and seasonal veg are front and centre. Think: charcoal-infused beef tartare with shallots, capers and chilli; and the wood-fired O’Connor beef rib drizzled in beef jus.

On the drinks front, there’s a focus on WA wines (including drops from the nearby Urban Winery’s H&C Wine), plus locally-brewed craft beers and a generous range of botanical cocktails, intentionally crafted to bring out the bold, smokey flavours of the wood-fired dishes.

Fallow

Northbridge

Located on William St in Northbridge, this new multi-level tavern is all about open-flame cooking and dry aged steak—there's even a meat vault in the middle of the venue! Chef Stuart Laws (Brown Street Grill) is one of the driving forces behind Fallow, and he's brought the same flame finesse into this kitchen too.

Aside from the cracking steak, we absolutely loved the prawn toast and croquettes to start. Pair with something from the wine or cocktail list, or check out the insane craft beer lineup—the tap selection is awesome—then finish up with the sticky date pudding. Served up in a piping hot skillet with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, it's big enough to share but good enough to polish off alone.

Lo

Highgate

Chef Tomas Bidios—the legend behind Highgate's popular Mexican pop-up, Tommy Tacos—has opened a second winner in the old Homme spot in Highgate called Lo. This time he's bringing us a Southern-style beat inspired by the same mammoth American trip that spawned his love of Mexican eats, all backed up by local, seasonal produce.

In the kitchen, there's a massive wood fire oven, so he's keen to inject some firey, smokey flavours into the menu while still keeping things refined, with plenty of elevated shares infused with southern flair. Think devil egg hash browns, buttermilk biscuits and fried chicken, and a spin on shrimp and grits washed down with dark spirits or a blackberry-infused mint julep.

Papi Katsu

Perth CBD

The Sesh Mafia guys (behind Shui in Subiaco) have big plans for 2024. Papi Katsu, a vibing Japanese-inspired basement joint, is the first of four new venue openings pencilled in for this year—and given how much we've raved about it, we're super keen to see what else they have coming. Located down near Print Hall, the hidden restaurant fuses Japanese eats with the playfulness these guys are known for—with neon lights, great decor and great music giving this place a buzzing atmosphere no matter when you visit. Start with a sneaky cocktail and one of their temakis (basically a nori roll in taco form) before debating over which plates to share—the sashimi platter and wagyu beef tataki have my vote.

Gibney

South Cottesloe

White tablecloths, marble, jacketed wait staff and the finest cuts of steak—it's hard to escape the old world glamour of Gibney, the latest venue under George Kailis' name.

The 600 square meters of oceanfront hospitality is serving up unmatched views all the way to Rottnest and super luxe Californian country club vibes courtesy of a multi-million dollar design from Rezen Studio—the local architecture and interior design firm behind fellow stunners like La Lune and Vin Populi.

Inspired by traditional steakhouses and brasseries throughout Europe, London and New York City, Gibney's menu focuses on classics done well. Think: an old school caesar salad, a cracking bowl of pasta or one of six top-tier steak cuts washed down with a good wine. There's also a dedicated seafood grill section and a crustacean bar, in case you need a reminder about how close you are to the sea you are here. Plus, keep an eye out for the drinks trolley and other tableside serving theatrics.

Ludo

South Perth

Ludo, the swanky new basement joint inside The Station (the new mutli-venue dining hub in South Perth from the crew behind The Old Synagogue and The Beaufort) opened its doors at the end of last year, and safe to say Head Chef Ludo Mulot's indulgent French menu has already left its impression on us. Grab a caviar martini and a lobster éclair before diving into divine plates like confit wagin duck leg, chicken ballotine and pan fried rankin cod.

Lola's

Fremantle

If Harry Peasnell has a hand in something, we want in. The ex-Melbournian, ex-fine dining chef slid firmly into our favourites list for his Freo sandwich bar, Peggy's (named after his first born). So when he announced a follow-up dedicated to his second daughter, Lola, we didn't need much convincing. Here you'll find NYC meets Aussie pizzas in fluffy, deep dish varieties and 14-inch thin, crispy based round pies, all featuring a slow fermented dough. If you're sitting in, throw on something from the solid wine list and a few tasty sides.

Bertie

Bassendean

Bertie, one of the best new restaurants in Perth

Secret’s out—we’re a tiny bit in love with Bassendean charmer, Bertie. This new kid on the block with an ex Vue De Monde chef at the helm is all about fancying up British-inspired classic dishes like the humble scotch egg, pork terrine and a pretty legendary sticky date pudding ice cream. The wine list is endless, the cocktails are punchy and we'll give them bonus points for smashing out some great non-alc tipples for the designated drivers too.

Threecoins & Sons

Inglewood

Another reopening that caught our attention, Threecoins—Inglewood’s well-loved family Italian —closed up for a little refresh this year, with the younger family members (of Testun fame) taking the reigns. It’s still sporting the classic red and white table cloths and slinging your traditional Italian eats, including their iconic baked rigatoni, alongside a whole host of banging new pinses and seasonal dishes that are well worth a look in.

6Head

Perth CBD

For a seriously baller steak night, 6Head’s new Elizabeth Quay restaurant hits the spot. We’ll warn you, the price point is rather steep, but rest assured the Sydney establishment is known for serving up the finest quality steaks, cooked to perfection by their skilled grill masters and doused in the most indulgent homemade sauces (the mushroom is next level).

Canteen Pizza

Applecross

Canteen Pizza

Canteen Pizza joined the list of strong reboots in the past year, opening up its new digs in Applecross in the tail end of this year. The new spot boasts a contemporary casual fit out with cosy booths and plenty of alfresco space to soak up the relaxed suburban atmosphere. While the menu features those same blisterey crusted woodfired pies and iconic porchetta, plus new plates like the swordfish schnitzel.

Subi Continental

Subiaco

A spread of food at Subi Continental

Coming to you from Miles Hull—the hospitality mastermind behind Jetty Bar, Ruin Bar and The Quarter Acre Hotel, to name a few—Subiaco Continental is bringing the big bistro vibes to Rokeby Road. Think freshly shucked oysters and a dedicated raw seafood section through to classic cheeseburgers and 600gr aged rib eye with cafe de paris butter and red wine jus. Drool. Throw on a bottle of something good or a cheeky martini and you'll feel right at home.

Yiamas

Subiaco

A table full of food at new restaurant Yiamas

Taking over the old George's Meze in Subi, Yiamas is the new Greek restaurant from the crew behind Community Coffee Co and Vinotto Bar and it's hands down one of the sexiest new spots to hit town this year. From its aesthetic interiors and unbeatable lineup of rare Greek pours, to the banging mezedes and trio of rich, smokey meats cooked over fire (the goat is iconic), it's the perfect spot for drawn out feasts with friends. Grab a Yiamas spritz, order a bowl of hummus and some smoked olives to get you started before grazing all night.

Vin Populi

Fremantle

Vin Populi, one of the best new restaurants in Perth

Brought to us by the same legends behind No MafiaVin Populi (Italian for 'wine for the people') is a light, breezy and sophisticated wine bar slash restaurant serving up antipasti, fresh made pasta and beautiful local meats alongside a cracking 160-bottle Italian-Australian wine list and sexy Italian cocktails. Start with a spritz and a few tasty morsels to share (the bocconcini is the bomb) then order a bottle of something Italian and dive head first into a bowl of pasta. Still have room? Finish with some Italian doughnuts and a nip of Frangelico. Bliss.

Nextdoor

South Perth

Nextdoor's hasbrowns

Nextdoor—the South Perth bar and grill connected to a family butcher shop—may not technically be new but it went through a major refresh after a short shutdown, so we're counting it here. Behind the restaurant's showstopping wood-fired grill, you'll now find Head Chef Elliot Sawiris (ex-Rockpool, Palace Arcade and Lulu La Delizia) doing his thing. The new menu features a good mix of playful snacks and affordable bites perfect for sharing over a couple of beers after work, through to more serious steaks and sides if you're keen to treat yourself. Whatever you do, grab a serve of the crispy hashbrowns topped with whipped cod roe, pickle powder, smoked trout roe and chives—it's to die for.

Best New Bars

Margot's

Northbridge

Margot's

Gin, vodka, dirty or dry—Margot's dedicated martini menu is a love letter to one of the most popular cocktails of all time. Not a martini fan? Trust us, with Eoin Kenny (one of Perth’s most prolific bartenders) behind it, you soon will be. Pair with plates of freshly sliced charcuterie from Adam Bielawski (CM Meatsmith), outstanding cold and cured seafood, seasonal pickles and other drink-ready snacks for a guaranteed good time.

H&C Urban Winery

Fremantle

If breezy plant-filled vibes are your thing, you need to get into the new H&C Urban Winery that's just landed on High St stat. Located in the space once home to The Raw Kitchen, the stunning warehouse-style venue has been lovingly filled to the max with plants and good wine—and quite honestly, the space is an absolute dream to be in. Go for the fried chicken with a glass of orange, washed down with the good ol' doctor. This is what Freo's about.

Shirley's

Fremantle

Say hello to Manuka Kitchen's latest baby, Shirley's—a gorg little bar named after co-owner Jodie's grandmother. She's bright, playful and leans hard on Australian nostalgia with wholesome Modern Australian snacks, scoffable wines and fun cocktails named after friends and fam. As you'd expect, Chef Kenny has absolutely nailed the eats, with housemade pastries, spelt bread and tried and true recipes from the archives. Think smoked fish party pies served with homemade tartare sauce, sleek little potato galettes topped with cheese and summer terrine filled with luscious roasted veg.

Bar Vino

Mount Lawley

Mount Lawley lucked out when the crew at Willing decided to transform their cool little corner cafe into a wine bar by night. Bar Vino's extensive 180-bottle-strong wine list showcases Italy's best and pairs perfectly with the Italian-leaning eats on offer. Order a pasta, pick a region and sip your way through.

Ode To Sirens

Fremantle

Ode To Sirens is Freo’s first vinyl bar and the latest venue from hospo veteran slash longtime muso, Daniel Goodsell (who's previously had ties to Balthazar, Shadow Wine Bar, Gordon Street Garage, Il Lido, Duende and more). Inside, the space is giving 70s Australiana, with endless nostalgia, vinyl and album art on show throughout. While outside you'll find a beaut little courtyard perfect for throwing down a few natural wines or a pina colada or two. Food-wise, the brief is Greek-centric so think honey-soaked halloumi saganaki, smokey eggplant with tahini and a next-level lamb yiro that hits the perfect balance of charred meaty goodness and super fresh tabouli and tzatziki.

Edward & Ida's

Northbridge

With super nostalgic pub-core vibes, Edward's & Ida's feels right at home on William St. The offering is casual yet slick in its delivery, with a vintage-style pub adorned with antique boose signage at street level, a cruisy courtyard out back and an eccentric little cocktail den hidden downstairs for all your late night boozing. Brought to us by the award-winning Foxtrot Unicorn and Nieuw Ruin team, talented Chef Blaze Young is on the eats here so it's a little more refined than your average pub, but still super approachable. You can always find a damn good bowl of chippies and some banging pies on. Our go-to though has to be the toothfish burger, with its beautifully crispy fried fish and creamy tartare sauce.

Al Lupo

North Fremantle

Scallops from Al Lupo

This beachside gem threw open its doors right at the start of last year and made an instant impression with its aesthetic interiors, lush wine list and stellar line-up of elevated Mediterranean-inspired snacks and shares. Dust the sand off your feet and step inside for fresh scallops cooked in chilli butter, tiger prawns with homemade focaccia and mouth-watering salmon crudo with mandarin and nori. You can chase it all down with one of over 100 delish vinos on offer or a sexy little cocktail number.

Leederville

Powell's cheese and wine

Powells Fromagerie and Wine Bar—aka the cheesiest little haven of grazing goodness—opened down Electric Lane in Leederville this year and slid right to the top of our date night hit list. Brought to us by Perth's platter queen, Jasmine Powell (Director of @tapasaddict), the chic little haunt is packed to the brim with the world’s finest cheeses and gourmet nibbles (the arancini and focaccia are insane), plus, a cool little list of booze to keep you going all night. Throw on the conversation starter coasters and popular girl dinner nights, and you'll quickly chalk this up as one of your fave bars in Perth.

Patio Bar

Fremantle

Opening up in the space once home to X-Wray Cafe, Patio Bar is the latest Freo hot spot for all your drinking adventures. Take a seat in the leafy courtyard, pick out a bottle of lofi vino from local winemakers like Chouette and LS Merchants and make a start on the small plates. The focaccia with whipped ricotta is a must.

Yalla Bala

Leederville

Ben Kotkis had already won us over with his wildly popular Yalla Bala pop-ups, so we’re not too surprised to see his first brick and mortar outpost—a tiny takeaway window in Leedy—has already racked up more than its fair share of lunch crowds. The offering is simple, but damn delightful. Just choose between falafel or chicken shawarma, in a fluffy pita or salad bowl, with chips or without.

Casa Pizza

Mount Hawthorn

A takeaway pizza from Casa Pizza Wine
Image credit: Casa Pizza | Instagram

If you know and love Casa, you'll already be convinced by the mere mention of a new takeaway pizza joint. And we reckon that's pretty fair. The crew previously had fingers in Si Paradiso and Ace Pizza pies—both known for producing the pizza goods—and at Casa, they've made a name for themselves with unique Italian plates, excellent booze and a winning vibe. So of course you'd expect Casa Pizza Wine to be every bit as good.

Bottega Deli

Claremont

Bottega Deli is the hottest new lunch spot in Claremont, slinging the finest paninis piled high with Italian goodness alongside homemade pastas, salads, Italian sweets and more. There’s plenty of pantry items here too if you’re keen to fill your basket, as well as Pascucci coffee to keep you caffeinated.
