best things to do in sydney

Sydney’s festive season is officially in full swing. 2016 might nearly be done, but there is still many a fun time to be had. This week has a little bit of everything; from exercise events, to the happiest of happy hours, Sydney is reminding us it’s quite the crowd pleaser.

We all know that the start of the week is the perfect time to make the most of this balmy summer weather; here are five seriously awesome things to do this week in Sydney.

Breathe + Summer Film Programme

We’ve finally come to terms with Mondays; we can’t avoid them (we’ve tried), so let’s just embrace them. Plan? Plan. Spend your Monday at the Newport with their run club, yoga on the deck or a stand up paddle boarding session with Ironman Kendrick Louis. Not only will it make you feel fab, there’s an epic granola brekkie bowl waiting for you at the end. Let’s be honest, we all totally deserve a reward for doing exercise on a Monday morning. But if mornings aren’t your jam, the Newport is offering a Monday evening movie night. This week it’s the Lion King and we seriously couldn’t be happier.

When: Monday 12 December, 9.15am – 11.15am, 7pm
Where: 2 Kalinya Street, Newport

Japanese Whisky Dinner At Osaka Trading Co.

Tuesday night is officially whisky night (at least in our house it is). Osaka Trading Co. is hosting their first whisky dinner and it’s going to be epic. You’ll be greeted with an Asahi beer and then sip your way through a selection of Japanese whiskies. A blend of modern Japanese flavours, with a strong seafood focus, each dish is designed perfectly for, you guessed it, whisky. Tuesdays don’t have to be that awkward day before hump day, so head to Osaka Trading Co. and you’ll be a whiskey connoisseur before Wednesday.

When: Tuesday 13 December, 6pm OR 8.30pm sitting
Where: Tramsheds Harold Park, 1 Dalgal Way, Forest Lodge
Cost:$120

Swing Dancing At The Petersham Bowling Club

On Wednesday nights the Petersham Bowling Club is hosting swing-dancing classes and we can’t wait. Hot tip for the gals, swing dancing is hard core exercise, so if hump day feels have you skipping your morning workout, have no fear the Petersham Bowling Club has got yo’ back. Hot tip for the fellas, chicks love a babe that can dance (we mean old school dancing, the shopping trolley does not count). So pop into the Petersham on Wednesday night and swing those hips like its 1929.

When: Wednesday 14 December, 6.30pm – 10pm
Where: 77 Brighton Street, Petersham
Cost: $15

Summer Margarita Calendar @ El Camino Cantina

Fact: balmy summer nights call for margaritas. Throughout summer El Camino Cantina are giving their legendary margaritas a summery makeover, it’s all about the fruity goodness and of course, the tequila. December is the month of the pineapple and we recommend combining it with a shot of El Camino’s coconut tequila. Each month the flavour will change, so if pineapple is your thing you need to get here stat, because on any day of the week a frozen pineapple margarita is exactly what we need. Now have we mentioned their happy hour? On weekdays between 5pm and 7pm ALL margaritas are half price, that’s $7.50. You also get complimentary queso dip. This may just be the happiest, happy hour deal we ever did see.

When: Now – the end of December
Where: 12 Argyle Street, The Rocks

Check Out The Lights Of Christmas At St Mary's Cathedral

Here at the Urban List we love the festive season more than most. Anything and everything that glows, sparkles and flashes is 100% our thing. Which is why we’re just a tad (very) excited that every night until Christmas St Mary’s Cathedral will be putting on their epic light display. The lightshow will also feature animations from the Nutcracker and some pretty cool painted images. There will be a choir performance at 7.30pm each night, with the lights turning on at 8.30pm and staying on right through until midnight.

When: Every night until 25 December 7.30 pm - Midnight
Where: St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney
