Quick, rush out and get your Advent calendar because the count down to Christmas starts this week. December has sprung upon us and I, for one, can’t wait to watch Love Actually at least once in the next 25 days. As an added bonus, daylight hours are stretching well into the evening, leaving plenty of time for activities. Luckily, we’ve got five awesome things to do in Sydney to get your summer off to a cracking start.
Sydney’s biggest gingerbread house
Hansel and Gretel would be mighty pleased with Anna Polyviou’s latest creation—a gingerbread house tall enough for an adult to stand inside. Made from 1,500 kilograms of gingerbread, this tasty feat of engineering took executive pastry chef Anna Polyviou and her team over three weeks to assemble. The gingerbread house has been erected in the Shangri-La Hotel lobby and will be open to the public from 2nd December. Bag yourself some Christmas gifts from the selection of take-home goodies on site. More info here.
When: From Wednesday 2nd December until Christmas
Icebergs x First Day of Summer Party
To celebrate the coming of warmer weather and longer days, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar is throwing a summer bash not to be missed. A first for the Bondi institution, whilst you’d usually have to pay a pretty penny to dine at Icebergs, on this Tuesday evening they’re throwing their doors wide open to the public with free entry and complimentary canapés. So get ready to bask in those glorious ocean views as you nibble on some saffron and mozzarella arancini and of course Iceberg’s signature polenta chips.
When: Tuesday 1st December
Where: Icebergs Dining Room and Bar
Cost: Free entry
If you Kant think of anything more confusing than philosophy, The Ethics Taster on the 2nd December will help you break down the basics of ethics. Speaker Dr Matthew Beard is a moral philosopher at The Ethics Centre and skilfully translates philosophical jargon into plain English. This is an exercise in understanding ethics so you can better your own decision-making— the perfect event for anyone vulnerable to Satan’s whisperings. Tickets for just $39 are available here.
When: Wednesday 2nd December
Where: The Ethics Centre
Cost: $39 per person
Snare a seat at the last week of the immensely popular Project Botanicals. Bombay Sapphire gin have teamed up with Biota Dining to craft two unique menus of food and cocktails that explore the exotic botanicals found in Bombay Sapphire gin (think juniper berries from Tuscany and coriander seeds from Morocco). This is a clever experiment in food and drink pairing that will have you re-evaluating the humble G&T. Two seating sessions will be available from 6pm - 8pm or 8.30pm - 10.30pm at the Kensington Street venue in Chippendale. Book tickets here.
When: Wednesday – Saturday (this is the last week!)
Where: The Old Rum Warehouse, Kensington Street, Chippendale
Cost: $105 per person plus booking fee
Conscious Club Sydney
The Conscious Club is all about making your free time more enlightening and providing social activities that contribute to the community. The result is all sorts of crazy events that combine genres and make social awareness accessible to everybody (and not just hippy communes). Their final event for the year will see The Bondi Hipsters take on the mystical wisdom of Sufism. If this mish-mash of genres has you confused don’t worry, it’s kinda the point. The plan is to make heavy spiritual ideas more palatable with humour. We’re sure Adrian and Dom are up to the task. Register for the event here.
When: Thursday 3rd December
Where: Paddington Town Hall
Cost: $55 per person
