A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI! Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Brisbane, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch! So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…

If it’s been a while since you’ve gone coastal, you might want to book in a road trip, ‘cause The Goldie is golden right now, with some of the hippest, freshest new restaurants and cafes in Queensland choosing to open shop in this sun-drenched seaside town.

From ugly pizza to gut-busting burgers, game-changing gelato and knock-out brekkies, The Gold Coast has come out swinging. Here are five of our fave new Gold Coast restaurants and cafes.

Brooklyn Depot

10 Beach Road, Surfer’s Paradise

Ain’t nothing like a greasy burg’ to finish off a day of sun-soaking, and newbie Brooklyn Depot is just the spot. The burger menu is straight out of the boroughs of Brooklyn (our pick’s the Outta Towner: beef patty, provolone, thinly sliced steak, roasted green peppers, caramelised onion, and cheese sauce) as well as some colourful deviations from traditional burger fillings, like the duck burger with a potato rosti and gingerbread tuile. And for dessert? We’ve got four words for you: Oreo-filled doughnut balls.

Gelato Messina

80 Marine Parade, Coolangatta

Cult gelataria, Gelato Messina has found its northern home at the Gold Coast. Housed in the new Strand Hotel, you might as well stop pretending to be civilised and dive head first into the insanely delish flavour combinations Messina’s known for, like malted pretzel smashed into peanut cheesecake, and peanut butter and coffee gelato layered with coffee caramel and doughnuts. One of the tastiest new additions to the Gold Coast’s restaurant scene, expect a line.

Shop 4, 3 Classic Way, Burleigh Waters

Coolie’s Griffith St Larder has a new little bro’, and he’s got chops. Larder has the kind of hearty and vibrant breakfast and lunch menu that’s made the Goldie a brunch destination in its own right. When you consider this little Gold Coast cafe is famous for its salted caramel-injected, soft serve doughnuts, we’re talking full blown brekkie-crush. And any café with a chip sandwich as a side option is A-OK in our books.

Tom Ugly’s

2 West Street, Burleigh Heads

Tom may be ugly, but his pizzas are stunners. The new addition to the Gold Coast’s restaurant scene is a real beaut’, using locally sourced produce, handmade sourdough bases, and a legit’ wood-fired oven to turn out perfectly crispy pizza pies. Eat in or take out, but whatever you do get some Tom Ugly’s into you.

Sparrow Eating House

Shop 2, 32 Lavarack Road, Nobby Beach

The breakfast game is strong at Sparrow Eating House, but so is dinner, so the only logical solution is to go twice. This little birdie is all about the share plates, with everything made to be shared, even the brekkie fare. Add a kickin’ cocktail menu and a great line up of Aussie wines and beers into the mix and it’s no wonder this gorgeous new Gold Coast restaurant is usually brimming with locals.

We're thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Brisbane. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
