All Of The Melbourne Markets To Visit In September

By James Shackell - 04 Sep 2017

footscray finds market

Melbourne loves many things. Footy, pies, using the term ‘throwing shade’, complaining about public transport, being ironically proud of Fed Square. Oh, and markets. Especially when that spring sun is shining. Coffee in one hand, new vinyl or faux industrial lamp in the other, browsing the stacks in search of a bargain. Is there a better way to spend a Sunday morning?

We’ve got a bumper market crop for you this month. Design and craft markets, street food, live music, books, zines and everything in between. Grab a pineapple and get busy. Those bargains won’t find themselves.

Queen Vic Night Market

West Melbourne

Back by popular demand, Queen Vic Winter Night Market has extended its run into spring. It’ll be open all the way to October this year, with the usual crew manning the stalls. Think Parmigiano pasta wheels from That’s Amore, Simply Spanish and their world-biggest-paella-pan and soft shell crab rolls, courtesy of Pickett’s Deli.

Where: Queen Vic Market
When: Wednesday nights, until October 4

Sustainable September Market

South Melbourne

South Melbourne Market is going green this month with the launch of Sustainable September: a program for kids, parents and the ethically minded, showing us all how to shop better and stop our planet turning into a huge ball of garbage. There’ll be kids activities, workshops, tours, a Sustainability Circuit, even a Trash to Treasure exhibition. Want to learn fermentation, or what to do with those leftovers? There’s a class for that.

Where: South Melbourne Market
When: Wednesday 6 September – Saturday 30 September

Suitcase Rummage

The rummage has returned. This is just what it sounds like: sellers show up with a suitcase or two, packed with goodies, and people show up and rummage around, looking for interesting crap. It’s an awesome concept, and it’s popped up all over the country over the last couple of years. Expect everything from vintage artwork and bric-a-brac to clothing, books, jewellery, shoes and grandmother’s pearls.

Where: The Atrium, Fed Square
When: 11am – 4pm, Sunday 17 September

Flour Market Spring Fling

Yep, the Flour Market is back for another season of cakes, doughnuts, croissants and other things that take a flamethrower to the delicate ice-sculpture that is our self-discipline. This year’s line-up includes familiar favourites like Luxbite, Cherry Cakes, and Cobb Lane, and new friends like The Pie Shopau79, and Bistro Morgan. Need a sweetener? Entry is a cool $2 until it’s all sold out.

Where: Collingwood Town Hall, 140 Hoddle Street Abbotsford
When: 9am until sold-out, Sunday 10 September

Tonerpalooza 2

Grab your scissors and oversized stapler—the State Library and Sticky Institute are back with Tonerpalooza 2, the second installment of their epic zine fair. A zine, for anyone that doesn’t know, is a limited-run, handmade magazine, created by people for very little money and very much enjoyment. Meet the makers and pick up some niche reading material. It’s gonna be excellent.

Where: State Library of Victoria
When: 10am – 4pm, 23 & 24 September
For more info, click here.

Phillip Island Designer Market

Phillip Island

Just squeezing into September, Mermaid Sorority are back with their Phillip Island Designer Market. This one’s a bit of a pic n’ mix: homewares, lifestyle products, boutique fashion, art and design, it’s all there. More importantly, they’re also bringing the food trucks, coffee and cakes. Entry is free, and you can even bring your pooch. Time for a roadtrip?

Where: YMCA Leisure Centre Stadium, 10-14 Church Street Cowes
When: 9am – 2pm, Saturday 30 September & Sunday 1 October.

Footscray Finds

What did we do before Footscray Finds? It burst onto the market scene back in June with an epic mix of vintage vinyl, old-school fashion, artisan homewares and scrumptious vegan food. There’s over 80 stalls to check out, plus a buzzing fleet of food trucks and resident DJs. You can even apply for a stall yourself—either a car boot or marquee space, which clock in at $50 a pop.

Where: Footscray Library carpark, 56 Paisley St Footscray
When: 8am – 1pm, Sunday 17 September

Langwarrin Design & Makers Market

Hands up if you need a little help placing Langwarrin on a map? It’s cool, we had to GoogleMap it too. Turns out it’s around the bay, right next to Frankston, and on the 17th it’s hosting the Langwarrin Design and Makers Market. Boutique homewares, jewellery, health food, local design and artwork—you’ll be able to grab a bunch of stuff. Free entry and free parking too. Nice one.

Where: Murdoch College Stadium, 80 Warrandyte Rd Langwarrin
When: 9am – 2pm, Sunday 17 September
For more info, click here.

Heide Maker’s Market

The Maker’s Market is a collab between two Melbourne’s institutions—Heide Museum of Modern Art and Rose St’s Artist Market—set in a beautiful sculpture park, out in Bulleen. Art’s the big focus here, but there’s a solid mix of design and handcrafted home goods and knick-knacks too. The line-up is curated, rather than open slather. A good one if you’re looking to pimp out your lounge room aesthetic.

Where: Heide Sculpture Park, 7 Templestowe Road Bulleen
When: 10am – 3pm Saturday 9 September
For more info, click here.

Flemington Racecourse Market

This one’s always a cracking good morning, especially when the weather is good. The Racecourse Market is springing back up on 17 September, and it’s bringing the usual mix of fresh produce, coffee, woodwork and homewares, boutique skin care and prints. Grab a hot jam doughnut and start rummaging. Chances are good you’ll find something special.

Where: Flemington Racecourse, 500 EPSOM Rd Flemington
When: 9am – 2pm, 17 September
For more info, click here.

Fed Square Book Market

By far the best use of Fed Square yet devised by the City Elders (although that nude bike ride was pretty good too), Fed Square Book Market pops-up in The Atrium every Saturday of the month. It’s free entry, and there’s usually an interesting mix of pre-loved titles to choose from. Think 5000+ books on literature, history, gardening, travel, art and kids’ stories.

Where: The Atrium, Fed Square
When: Saturdays in September, 11am – 5pm
For more info, click here.

Rose St Artist’s Market

Good old Rose St. It never gets old. Widely regarded as the best arts and craft market in the city, Rose St has grown over the years. Now there’s even a diner and rooftop bar, open from 8am till late all weekend. Rotating stallholders keep the range fresh each week, but chances are always good you’ll snag some new artwork, boutique jewellery or a wooden broach in the shape of a deer.

Where: 60 Rose St, Fitzroy
When: 11am – 5pm, every Saturday and Sunday
For more info, click here.

Kensington Market

Kensington Market likes to keep things local. Most of the stallholders here live in the local area, across the road in nearby Flemington. There’s 70+ specialty stalls on offer, with a decent mix of fresh produce, designer fashion, children's wear, jewellery and artwork, plus live music and buskers to keep the atmosphere pumping. Fantastic community feels.

Where: Kensington Town Hall, 30-34 Bellair St
When: 10am – 3pm, Sunday 17 September 1, 2017
